Digital Camera pic of the day (2 Viewers)

I was in California for a couple weeks and took plenty of photos. Here are a few quick ones that caught my eye as I was sifting through.

Thoughts?

Alight
Concept was there, just seems to be the wrong time of day. The sun light behind is to bright to give the shot the "darkness" it needs to really pop. Nice concept idea though :goodposting:

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't really notice it until you mentioned the light being a little too bright in the upper middle.

Hey guys and gals, I have a question as I do not know much about digital cameras. My daughter is 13 years old and has really got into photography as a hobby in the past year. I am excited by this as it keeps her out and about, creative and off the computer (with the exception of when she is using photoshop). She has in fact had pictures published in photography coffee table books.

She has about 3 or 4 digital cameras that she has collected from friends and realatives that she uses all the time but they seem to limit what she can/wants to do. She has asked for the following camera for Christmas: Nikon Coolpix P80 She claims that she has done a lot of research and talked to multiple people (uncluding her aunt who has done some professional photo gigs in the past) abou the capabilities of the camera. She likes the zoom, shutter speed, FPS :coffee: for what she prefers to shoot.

My concern is that it is a little bit pricey as I have found it for $275 which seems a little bit much for a teenage girl but I want her to persue this as hobby. Can you tell me if this is a good camera? Is it worth that type of money? She is pretty responsible and takes care of other items we have bought for her inthe past ipod, etc.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I just searched some reviews online and while they seem positive, they're not glowing. Have you thought about getting her a film camera? The medium format ones like the Holga and Diana are affordable and a lot of fun to mess around with. And they have kind of a young, urban hipster following that might appeal to a teenage girl (check out Lomography Society International to get a feel for it). The film and developing can be a bit pricey, but you'd still be saving money over the Nikon and opening your daughter up to a new avenue of photography. Hope this helps.

I had a hard time choosing one, so I'll post a few on here! This past summer, a few friends and I went on a 2 1/2 week excursion to NC/Tennessee. The first week was OBX, and last few days were Bonnaroo Music Festival, but in between we killed time by camping out in the Great Smoky Mountains. It was a different experience for me, because I've never been camping, but I have to say it's great to get away from the daily grind and just be one with nature, haha. So here are some of the highlights.

First hike to Abrams Falls

A view from the tower at Clingman's Dome (highest point in the mountains)

Warning before starting the hike

Pretty high up on the hike

The bridges along most of the trails

I can't wait to go back!

My photo, No One Gets Out Alive, is the front-page photo today on the Chicago Public Radio website.
Congrats. :hot: Urban photography isn't my thing, but you do some nice work.
I think urban photography is one of the most difficult subjects to master. Whenever I try to take a photo of a door it results in a very underwhelming photo of a door. When Pantagrapher takes a picture of a door, I look at it and say, now that is cool.
Hey. Thank you.

Here are some of my better doors and building details, any suggestions on improvement other than more interesting subject?

address

arch

Column
The column photo is my favorite of the three. I like to see the architectural features deprived of their context. It highlights the shape and structure and deterioration. The address photo is probably your toughest subject. The background is plain and the gate itself is ordinary. This is the kind of thing that probably calls for a jacked-up aperture to really get some bubbly bokeh going in the background.

The arch is interesting, but I think something like that needs to be broken down into its component parts to get the most out of it. For example, try a portrait shot of that narrow window on the left side with the address number. Don't worry about getting anything else into the shot; and don't worry about getting the entire window slit into the shot. I think the juxtaposition of those two features would look cool.

Experiment with different stuff. Don't be afraid to sit or lay on the ground to get your shot, because everyone sees things standing up. I notice there aren't many shadows in your photos. And that's fine. But you can always revisit subjects at different times of day to see what the light does to them (I always think of this photo by Ansel Adams—the sun was going down behind him and illuminated the headstones in the cemetery. That photo would not be nearly as interesting without the play of light).

Thought there would be some chicks pics in here
