I've just returned from an epic trek on the John Muir Trail - 12 days of walking 150 miles at high elevation. I shot about 1200 photos and some of them really turned out nice.

Thanks guys, I broke the RAW file into 5 different exposures and combined them to do an HDR. This image really benefited from the HDR. Those were the colors I was seeing when I lined up the shot but I couldn't get the range I needed with the single exposure that I took.Great capture of all the colors!
Great use of HDR. I don't like HDR when it's obvious that it's HDR. Most images are overdone, they look unearthly. IMO, the true use for HDR is in images like the above, when it's used as a tool to get the range of colors you're seeing with your eye. Otherwise, it's just an overdone filter.Great job.
I completely agree with you on all of that. I probably have a few in my photostream that are definately toeing that line but I have really tried to stay away from being too overdone. I definately like the way HDR brings out colors and detail but have tried to avoid overusing to the point where it doesn't look like a photo anymore but looks like a painting instead. There is definately a fine line there and some of the presets in photomatix that people use are exactly what you describe, just overdone filters. I have stayed away from the presets and tried to process everything manually but I'm definately still learning this software at the same time. I do think HDR is a great technique if done correctly because it's not that easy to capture an entire range in just one exposure.

Well, no offense on T. Kinkade. I personally can't stand his stuff, but I respect his technical skill. Art (as photography) is in the eye of the beholder.Agree on the HDR thing. My biggest pet peeve is the HDR halo in the sky around buildings and landscapes. To me, that's the line; if you can't get rid of the halo you're pushing the HDR too hard.As always, it's just my opinion. I was just looking at your work. Great stuff. You really make your colors pop. Do you edit your pictures? (hope I am not offending you- I know you do the HDR stuff)I have photoshop elements but I have only made a birthday card for my sons birthday party so far.
His HDR helps get all the tones which give the great colors and "pop". He does great work with his HDR images to keep them from looking "over done".Dr. Doofenshmirtz said:

Thanks, definately not offended by your question as yes, I post process every image that I take. I never get them coming out of the camera exactly right. I don't always do HDR though either. Some of the things you can definately do in Elements are levels adjustments and curves adjustments, which will at least help with your contrast and should brighten up your highlights and darken your shadows. For colors specifically, you should make a hue/adjustment layer and adjust your colors in there so that they get to your liking.Dr. Doofenshmirtz said:

Yeah, it is actually the "Michigan School For The Deaf". With the fog and urban decay, I couldn't resist changing it for my photo.

Beautiful shot. Personally I'd prefer to the entire image in that high key coloring that you have on the girl. I think you lose the power of those wonderful highlights on her face by using selective color. Maybe just dial back the saturation on the background slightly for depth without going entirely BW. Just MO.
Thanks - I'll give that a shot. The original picture was ho-hum until I started messing with the colors. I generally have a tough time adjusting skin tones too much without it looking cartoonish.

The dog photo is fantastic. The columns one is just too dark IMO. I would have liked to see a little bit more of the other columns. I understand what you are trying to convey there but it resulted in way too much black area in that image. Again, that's just my opinion, hope you don't mind a critique.

Yep - wouldn't say I'd never switch systems but as of today, I can't think of a good reason. Pentax fits my style of shooting well.....
