Digital Camera pic of the day (1 Viewer)

Big fan of this thread and I have a couple of questions. First of all I do not have a SLR as of yet so forgive my ignorance, but...- Are most of the pics in this thread altered after they are taken? - If you do alter your pic would you mind posting a before and after?
I do about the same as Pantagrapher.
Same here. My best pictures require little alteration. That said, almost all pictures benefit from some small adjustment on crop, levels and saturation.

Most of mine are altered slightly in Photoshop, but I try to use a light hand. I will crop and straighten and make adjustments to sharpness, contrast and saturation. Occasionally, I will lessen some parallax. I might post a before and after some day, but the difference will be minimal.
:headbang: & :drive:Same here.. I Try to make my adjustments in the field as I'm taking the :pics: . This is easier with the Landscape photos I take. I usually take 5 to 10 shots of the exact same thing ( Gotta  Digital) at different settings and then when I get home upload them and compare and choose one or two of the ten to actually Convert from RAW to jpg and upload. It is not unusual for me to get back from an hour of shooting with 100-200 photos. As pantagrapher mentioned, I'll adjust some contrast/Brightness/straighten/sharpness and crop but most of my :pics: are how they were captured.

Just got a D3100. Haven't read anything yet, waiting for Understanding Exposure to get here. Took it to the beach this evening tried to find some interesting shots. :headbang:

One

Two

I found it hard to find interest things to take a photo of. Only so many times you can take a shot of the sun.
I find Flickr Explore is a good source for photo ideas. (2nd to this thread of course). Like your picture One above.

I find that if a photo needs a lot of adjustment in Photoshop, it's not good enough to make the cut for me. So normally I do a tiny bit of curve enhancement and just a tad of unsharp mask or smart sharpen.

Well these replies sorta suck :( I was hoping you guys did all sorts of editing to your pics, it would make it easier to compare mine to.

 No worries GB.. As you shoot more you'll learn more.

We had a "learning" thread running but it fell to the wayside...

Cool, it still exists>>> Here is a "learning thread"

Some good weather over the weekend, so I got out to take some pics:

Wall

Shutter Stay

Soar

Iron 1

Iron 2
That wall shot is a beautiful composition. The horizontal lines beg for a correction in the parallax distortion. Check it out.
I agree, I just have no clue yet on how to go about that.
It's quite simple in Photoshop. If you don't want to do it, the link I gave you is high resolution and you can keep it.

Shot a lot of pics in lower Manhattan last week.

Here's a few..

Corridor to the Underground

Lumber Corp Goes Urban

Street Office
Especially loved "corridor". Did you do a lot of post-processing on it? Just curious because not much is showing on the EXIF.
Yes, I spent about 45 minutes on this one in post processing. I took the single raw file and made about 10 different exposures at 1 stop increments from each other. I then processed all files through photomatix to make one 16 bit .tiff and did the tone mapping which brought out the colors a lot more. Went back into photoshop and did some curve adjustments and a little sharpening. I also know I did a little cloning here and there, especially on the sign to take out some areas that didn't look right.

This is how "corridor" looked coming out of the camera. This is the RAW file just converted to .jpg with no processing. It looks terrible really and compunding my problems was something got on top of my shutter, you can see a black hook shaped thing under the sign, that was in my camera, I had to clone that out too.

Nice work on the finished product.
Seriously. Great example of post-processing magic.

I always drive by this place... Chinese restaurant, with Spanish tile roof and a British phone booth outside. Juxtaposition always gets to me. So I snapped a few pics and thought I'd try and do a faux-Lomo.

Century Dragon

With the Spring time melting going on figured I'd venture down to Willow River Falls to see what effect it was having.

Lot's of changes coming to my photos down there as the extra water has been splashing up on the trees and branches, causing a lot of them to break and/or bend into new shapes.

It will be interesting to see once all the melting occurs how this tree recovers: Mother Nature reconstruction

I'm amazed this one didn't break off yet:

Iced over

Chilly morning

Thought this one in B&W came out niceFrozen view

Will add more later
