Digital Camera pic of the day (1 Viewer)

I need some photoshop help. what is the easiest way to blur the background of a photo? I have a couple of pics with a couple in the foreground, and dont want to remove the background but blur it so it is less noticeable. I have photoshop CS, but only know how to do basic things with it.

The easiest way would be to use the lasso or pen tool to draw a marquee around the subjects (I usually view the photo at 200% while doing this to get the edge right). Once you have the selection complete, go to image>select inverse and then go to filter>blur and keep blurring until you get the desired effect.

Since I missed out on the recent photo contest, I thought I would post a few things I have been doing the last bit...

Enjoy!

Hey Pant, or anyone else,

This pic of the hornet, I posted last week.....I would really like to try to fix the blown whites on the flower. This was the best I could do, but would love to tone them down a bit more...

Any tips/help/fixes would be great.

I am still a newb with PS, so I am sure I have not hit the peak yet.

I did levels, highlights/shadows, and brightness/contrast. Ran USM, and cropped.

I tired this but when I use filter>blur nothing happens. Ive "blurred" it about 10 times with no results. Im using a jpg with one layer if that matters?
The blur function is very subtle. Another thing you might try is using the blur tool. It's a lot more effective if you really want to jack something up. It's in your toolbar and looks like a water droplet.

Thanks for the help. i found the "lens blur" filter which seems to let me crank it up at once.

I'd pull down the contrast a bit and pull down the white arrow on the very bottom of the levels pallet. Another thing that works very well as a quick overexposure fix is the exposure adjustment bar in iPhoto, if you have it. It's a lot quicker and gives pretty decent results.

Another question for ya - in photoshop when using the magnetic lasso tool, how can I slide the image over (if it doesnt all fit on the screen because its at 200%) without losing the lasso selection?

Hold down the space key and drag with the mouse.

Yeah. Mac-only, as far as I know. It used to really suck, but the recent versions have some good tools for quick photo editing. There's also a handy iPhoto extension out there for doing batch uploads to Flickr.
