Digital Camera pic of the day (2 Viewers)

Cave On Fire

This was taken a couple of years ago in Carlsbad Cavern. Approximately a 1 second time exposure at f22, hand held, camera intentionally moved to create unusual results.

:FINGER:Yes, I am jealous..

In less than one month I will be getting my XTI and then just you wait.. ;)
:lmao: It is all about the scenery. Anyone can take good shots of great landscapes and beautiful nekkid naked women. Now, if my wife would just let me take some pictures of beautiful nekkid women.....

You better pick up a case or two of Orville's, I don't see this changing in the near future!

I created my first flickr album over the weekend.

Currently using a Canon Powershot A620. I don't know too much about photography besides the very basics, but I enjoy snapping pics. Someday I'll get motivated enough to learn more. In the meantime, I'd love to hear what the FBG photog regulars think.

TIA
These are very, very cool. I'm so jealous that I can't take pics like you guys.

Take more pictures. Seriously, the absolute best way to get better is to take a ton of pictures which is easy (and cheap) with digital cameras.Just realize that you need to be brutal when you are looking through them and throw away 97% - 99% of what you take.

One of the main reason if I know I'm going out on a test & Shoot trip my wife & daughter won't go with me. I've been known to take 5-10 pictures of the same thing, just from different vantage points and/or different settings. By the 2nd or 3rd picture they have this expression on their face :( and by Pic number 6 you can almost see steam :hot: :lol:So when out with them I try and keep it down to 2 or 3 per item and leave the :nerd: approach for when I'm out on my own. GB Digital cameras as I can't imagine what this would have cost me in film

 no doubt. I can't count the times I have been stoked with a photo shoot and ended up throwing almost all of them away.

I am with you, Mrs. BSR. I have only disagreed with you once chica! kbreaker did an awesome job on his pics. I have yet to be disappointed with a picture I have seen in this thread. I dabble here and there, but I can learn a lot from these guys... :lmao:

Any advice for those of us that take action shots, like my daughter's basketball games, etc.?
Are you shooting an SLR or a point-and-shoot camera? Most P&S cameras have a problem with this due to shutter lag (the time it takes from when you push the shutter button unitl the picture is actually taken). I'm not saying it can't be done but you have to be very good at anticipating the action.

I bought a Cannon digital from recommendation of a guy in a camera shop. I told him I needed something that would take pictures of moving objects, b-ball players, and he recommended the one I have. I admit that I don't go out and practice with it and only take pics during games. Actually, since I coach, I have to give the camera to a parent or an older kid.

:kicksrock: I like to call them P.O.S. instead of P & S when it comes to capturing action. You really have to be ahead of the action. Focus in on the subject by pushing the Button down half way, then move the camera to where the action is heading and then snap just as the action gets to that spot. If it has a Multiple Shot feature use that. This won't work if the action is moving to the side of you. But if the action is moving towards you, you will capture the action as it is happening without having to wait inbetween Shutter clicks.

If you have something like the Rebel (or higher) you can turn on the capability for the camera to take multiple shots in a row as long as you hold the shutter button down (at least until you fill up the camera's internal memory). Many of the cameras can be set to be in "action" or "sport" mode which might help. Learn to anticipate where the action is going and try to shoot just a bit in front of the action so you don't have the player leaving the frame just as the shutter button is pushed. Not really my area of expertise, perhaps others have some other hints. That being said, this it is not going to help your skills much if someone else is doing the shooting! ;)

:goodposting: I know. But I can at least tell the person shooting the pic. I've used the action option but the pictures don't seem to come out as well as when I put it on automatic. ;)

This is what I have (or at least it looks just like it).
That shouldn't have the Shutter lag as we were talking about. Your best bet is to just go out and shoot a soccer game or a softball game that you are not involved in.

Just try different settings and take many pics. Go home, load the pictures and see what looked best.

Then set your camera to those settings the next time you need it.

Not to sound like a whiner but part of my problem is also that I have a very slow computer. I've tried dowloading them at work and sometimes it takes the pictures off my memory card even though I didn't tell it to. It's times like these that makes things so frustrating. I seriously feel like I need someone standing over my shoulder until I get the hang of digital camera/computer issues. :hifive:

Go with what works for you but don't be afraid to experiment.Another option is to set the camera in Shutter Priority mode and set a fast shutter speed like 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, etc. and see what the fastest speed is that you can shoot at while getting a well exposed photo. This will vary a bit from gym to gym due to different lighting setups. Also, if doesn't seem to bother the players you can try using the flash, that will stop the action but if the player is coming staight towards you they might not appreciate the bright light in the eyes.

hmmmm. Something tells me no go :hifive:

Well damn. :hifive:  Bevo, the camera shop guy told me that action pictures come out less blurry when you use a flash. I make sure that whoever is taking the pictures for me, has the flash on.

While we're on the subject of action shots...

I bought a Canon S2 IS camera about a year ago due to it being highly recommended at various sites. I really like the camera except when it comes to capturing moving images. I can't find any good way to capture shots at my daughter's basketball or soccer games. The pictures always come out blurry no matter which settings I use. My previous camera was a Canon A420 which had an "Action shot" setting on the dial, however this camera doesn't have that option.

Is there anyone who's familiar with the Canon S2 IS that could give me some tips? My wife is ready to throw this camera in the trash, but I have to believe there's a way to successfuly take action shots with this model.

Here is one of my daughter just after serving a volleyball during a game.

Here's another taken during a basketball game. My daughter is #33. I love the ponytail flying.

Anyway, these were taken with the Canon Rebel.

I am not that familiar with the S2 but I have heard good things about in general. Does it have a Shutter Priority mode? If so, use that and see if there is enough light to shoot at 1/500 or faster. Are your blurry shots generally when shooting action or is everything coming out blurry. If everything is coming out blurry you might try shooting some test shots with the camera mounted on a tripod (thus taking the human element out of the equation) and see if they are still blurry. If they are still blurry then it is likely that the camera had a malfunction and should be checked out by a camera repair shop.

I think those are pretty good, especially the second one. To me action shots look better when "some" of the picture is blurry (due to motion) instead of having everything completely stopped. I think that actually does a much better job of conveying action.Another tip: When the action is moving from left to right or right to left in front of try to pan the camera along with the action, actually just slightly in front as you shoot. Done correctly this will often leave the subject clear and stopped but with the background being a bit blurred. This also does a nice job of conveying the movement of the subject instead of having everything stopped in its tracks.

I think there may be a shutter priority mode. I'll have to break out the manual when I get home. My son has bball practice tonight so I should be able to test it there.BTW, the pictures are only blurry when taking action shots. It takes beautiful pics when people are posed and general nature pics turn out great as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but: are you moving the camera on a tripod with the subject? Or are you holding the camera still as the subject moves?

This is my favorite shot love the z-axis happening here. The woman in some of your shots is beautiful as well. :bag:
Thanks and Thanks.. On others' suggestions, I just picked up Understanding Exposure, so more and better things ahead!

Where are you taking your light meter readings before you compose a picture like this? Point at the sky?
In pictures like this I use the Canon spot meter mode and aim it at what I consider to be the most important element of the image and use that as a starting point. In this image, IIRC, I targeted the end of the bluff that begins in the far left of the image about 1/2 way down and extends out towards the middle of the image. I then bracket the heck out of the shot (e.g. perhaps I am shooting at f8 and I will bracket the shot at 1/1000, 1/500, and 1/250). I generally will bracket the shot in 1/3 stop increments from -3 stops to +1 stop. I shoot mostly Aperture Preferred because shutter speed is not of great importance when shooting with the camera mounted on a tripod, I am more concerned with depth of field being what I want. It would not be unusual for me to take 18 - 36 bracketed shots of this from one tripod mounted point. I might then change the aperture (to change the depth of field) and repeat the process. I might then move the tripod up/down or left right and repeat the process. It sounds cumbersome but I can do a set of 18 - 36 shots in 1 to 2 minutes. If the lighting is good I will usually find a single good exposure that is nearly 100% accurate and use that. If the lighting is harsh (as it was in this image) I will create a High Dynamic Range image, using Photoshop and Photomatix, that merges 3 or more of the bracketed shots into one shot that preserves both the highlights and shadows.

Just a note for those that are wondering. I do not consider my work as a documentary style photography. I will massage the images in Photoshop to achieve the effect (color, sharpeness, vignetting etc.) that I want. I don't do a lot of cutting something from one image and pasting it another but I will do so if I find it interesting. I consider this an artistic endeavor, not out of the camera documentary, even though I don't consider myself to be much of an artist.
