Disney Vacation (6 Viewers)

I went two weeks ago; Ohana doesn't need anymore love in this thread, but I can't resist. It was the highlight of the trip for both the wife and I. Our kids (9,8, and 3) loved it too. Definitely on my "must do" list going forward.
Glad you liked it! 13 more days and I will be eating dinner there...can't wait. Have any of you done LaNouba at DTD? Since we have AP's we can get a 25% discount on tickets when we are there in a couple of weeks and I thought about checking it out. Is it worth the money ($70+pp)?

Also, if any of you are planning on going to Orlando in the next year and want to spend a day at SeaWorld or Busch Gardens, tickets will be on sale next Friday (13th) for $45 for 1 day adult admission. The deal is through Daily Getaways. We have never done a non-Disney park but I think in September we are going to end our trip with a day at SeaWorld. I have always wanted to go and it seems like a nice change of pace.
Best I can tell, Ohana is basically a Hawaiian pig roast kind of event right? Is it a big show that's so good? Food? A little insight is appreciated. I feel like I've done the best I can at the cultural center in Hawaii when it comes to food and show, but maybe not.

No, you might be thinking of the Polynesian Luau Dinner Show. Ohana is more like a Brazilian steakhouse. A feast of meat best explained by Yankee23Fan.

ah...ok. We'll have to work that in one of our trips. For this one, the only times they have are 9:35 pm. Won't get it for a four year old.

Here are some random Disney Food Pics. I wish I would have remembered to take pictures of everything but I got quite a few. These are from 2 different trips.

Or something?!?!? You dare categorize the great O'hana as just a throw away eatery that you can find at any little town that serves food that even commoners would eat? No, sir, O'hana is much, much more. Let's set the scene:Initially you get there for your reservation. Immediately the great great smell of steak, chicken, pork and sausage hits you from the open grill int he center of the dining room. You are treated to the opportunity for top shelf alcoholic beverages as you sit by the internal waterfall in the hotel and relax. There is usually some form of musical entertainment going on to help you enjoy the moment. But then - the great moment - you are called to your seat.

You sit down and need not order. Oh no. Your order is already set. You get your drinks topped off and ready, and then you see what comes to you from heaven.

Pork fried dumplings

Honey Corriander chicken wings

Mixed Greens with Honey-Lime dressing.

And chips to dip in three dipping sauces - a peanut sauce that literally spilled from God's right hand, a chimichurri and a sweet and sour. OF course, all of these is all you can eat for the entirty of your stay there. And that's just the beginning.

Skewers (prepared over an oak fire): Marinated sirloin steak, Asian BBQ pork loin, Mesquite grilled turkey, and non-peeled shrimp. This is what hits you next. All you can eat. Dozens of servers are there to help you enjoy these wonderful wonderful presents from above. Hopefully you aren't full because there is more...

Broccoli and green peas and pad Thai noodles help to complete the table.

Eat up fine sir. Eat up. You will never have a better meal. But wait.... What's this? There is still dessert? I couldn't. I've eaten a few chickens and cows here but man oh man what do I see coming towards me? Bread pudding a la mode with Banana Foster sauce. Get that did you? Bread pudding - the best you've ever had, topped with vanilla ice cream and banana's foster sauce. This is stuff that is too sexy for Cinemax here folks.

It's not just a meal. It's basically a revolution of food. You will never enjoy another meal as much as you used to after this. You will crave, you will want, you will desire. Just one more honey corriander wing, just a few more dips of the peanut sauce... just one more just one more...........

You should try to monitor the Disney on line reservation site. We had a 9:35p as well, but I watched it for a week or two and finally one opened up at 7:30p that was perfect! And even my wife loved the dinner there even though I had pumped up the expectations to huge based on the recs on this board! Everyone was happy...but go hungry! It's a lot of food!

I will be dumping some reservations in the next day or two. I will post them here right before I do in case anyone is looking.

Ohanas (Polynesian) - a lot of people mentioned this earlier in this thread, and well I didn't care for it. I enjoy shrimp, I don't enjoy burnt shrimp. The turkey was bland, and I didn't try the pork or steak, but basically it was charred on the inside and pink inside. Basically what they do is put the meat over a flame and bbq. they have some dipping sauces, but they tasted like variations of ketchup, mustard and sweet and sour sauce to me. They bring you all you can eat which is okay, but again, not a big fan. I've had worse though.
I...... I don't know what to say... I've seen people that complain about fruit being too sweet, women being too beautiful, the Yankees winning too much. I never quite understood it. I mean, to me, if fruit isn't sweet, what's the point? They become vegetables on trees. So, the sweeter the better I say. And women; beauty being in the eye of the beholder aside, no one is too beautiful. I think that opinion shows in public a deep seeded personal self loathing that requires less beauty so that the beholder isn't as ugly as they really feel. And the Yankees, well, 161 wins and a title is still not perfection to me.But, to go so far and and to say, "... well I didn't care for it," when speaking of the great O'Hana. I think I understand humanity now. All my years of faith in Christ, entertainment by the Yankees, physical gratification by women and sated tummy of fruit have not given me the answer to humanity, but this has. I see it now. The clouds have given way to the horizon of all things and it is there. Clear. Perfect. The message is so obvious, the lesson so simple that you can actually see the letters of the words of the great true meaning of life. They say,"Some people are just ******* crazy."

Thanks guys....we go to DW pretty often, so I'll work it in the next time we go. Sounds like everyone would like it.

Has anyone checked if the wait times listed on the app are close to accurate? Also, if you had ONE magic hour in Magic Kingdom and a three and a six year old what would you do in that hour? I am thinking the ride in the new fantasy land but not really sure. tia.

Does Disney ever tip its hand as far as free dining. The past couple times we went they offered it but I haven't seen anything about it yet. We're probably go back this october if we don't decide to to Universal this time instead.

Fantasyland is the way to go. A bunch of 1 minute rides you would have to wait 30-50 minutes for. skip the shows until it gets hot and crowded.

What's open now? I would hit the rides like Snow White, Small world, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh.

Thanks! Tonight I'm gonna research what's actually open. I gotta re read the fast pass rules too to see if anything changed. My buddy today said when he went six months ago you could only fast pass one ride at a time. I thought I read something different here.

Your buddy is only partially correct, at best.
One thing to keep in mind, there are restrictions as to how many passes you can have at once. Your FASTPASS will have the time that you can get your next FASTPASS printed on it. (Usually this is when your current FASTPASS can be used or after two hours have elapsed.) Don't plan on going from one FASTPASS attraction to another gathering up slips. These machines are smart and won't issue another until your current pass allows it.

Been awhile since posting in here. DVC member considering a blended trip between Disney/Universal, so curious if anyone has done this and if there are good online resources on the topic? My boys will be 14/11 at the time of the trip (likely next Spring Break) and they are jonesing for more action rides. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance!

How much does ohana cost? If I went with my wife and son can I opt out of eating? I am a vegetarian and don't want to overpay for some crappy lasagna dish which is oh so common as the vegetarian fare at places like this.

$36.99 per person if not on the meal plan. There is a sushi walk-up bar right next to Ohana that you maybe able to bring it into the resurant. You may want to double check on that, but I want to say my SIL did this same thing 2 years ago.

:lmao: I love this thread. We are probably hitting the happiest place on earth around Thanksgiving. Already started my diet so that I can gain 50 pounds at O'hana.

When my wife responded to my request of booking Ohana twice by suggesting one of them be for breakfast, I jumped down her throat so fast she is still disturbed.

How is breakfast compared to the dinner. My trip in September, we will be doing both. I convinced my wife to head down to Orlando early for our cruise next month. I used the excuse that if something happens on the way there we could miss our boat. As soon as I got the ok, the next step was to book Ohana the night before the eating that will take place on the cruise.

The breakfast is good and they have entertainment going on that gets the kids involved. It's one of the better family style breakfasts in the complex. But dinner far surpases it and any other meal I've had there, with only Le' Cellier being a close enough second to be considered second.

Tip that some may not know: Fastpasses are good all day long. You don't have to return during the times listed on the ticket. You CAN'T go early, but you can go late right up until the park closes.

Very possible to rack up pockets full of fastpasses in the day that you can use at night.

Cast members have been instructed to start enforcing the expiration times on FPs. You are okay if you are running a few minutes late but you may have problems if you show up any later.

We are going on 5/5 - hoping that since its post Spring Break (pulling the kids out of school) that it wont be as crowded but the weather will be good....anyone go that tim of year before?

Have you eaten at The Yachtsman? Was debating this and Le Cellier for a steak meal.

We went there around that time a couple of years ago. (wife is a CPA and we can't really go much earlier!!) We had no troubles, it was not really that crowded. The idea being that most "Spring Breaks" were in March and April. The Flower and Garden Festival was going on at that time at EPCOT.(It going on this year until May 20th.) That was kinda interesting, but it didn't raise that many people for lines, etc.Enjoy!

It's not just a meal. It's basically a revolution of food. You will never enjoy another meal as much as you used to after this. You will crave, you will want, you will desire. Just one more honey corriander wing, just a few more dips of the peanut sauce... just one more just one more...........

:lmao: Yeah, we've had similar run ins when mine has tried something similar.
Have you eaten at The Yachtsman? Was debating this and Le Cellier for a steak meal.
Skip both of these and head to Schula's Steak house at the Dolphin resort.

My country 'tis of thee... Today

Sweet land of liberty ...Today

Of thee I sing.... Today

Of thee I sing....TODAY!

I'm off to Disney...To-day!

Getting ready to make a reservation for October... someone tell me about the +/- of the new Art of Animation resort vs. Pop Century. Is there a difference in location/convenience? Obviously the AoA will be newer... what about the amenities/pools? TIA.

eta - we will be driving down, so will have a car with us, if that matters at all

Location should be basically the same, since it was built adjacent to Pop Century.
With an area of 11,859 square feet, the feature pool (called the "Big Blue") at the Finding Nemo wing of the resort will be the largest swimming pool at Walt Disney World Resort outside of the water parks. There will also be a dry play area called "Squirt's Righteous Reef".

Someone mentioned fast passes being good all day. Unfortunately for those of us (guilty) who would hoard FPs for later in the day, this isn't the case anymore. In early March they started enforcing the FP window printed on the card. From what I have heard and read, you can arrive up to 5 minutes early and 10-15 minutes late and still get in. After that you will be turned away. If you are eating at a sit down restaurant and it causes you to miss your FP window, you need to let your server or someone know and I think they can give you a stamp on it or a different FP to use.

I'm not all excited about the real FP policy actually being enforced but I get there next Saturday so I guess I will see how it goes then. Either way, I can't complain bc I will be in Disney!

I'd love to hear your experience with FPs when you get back since we'll be going soon and I'm one of those anal ones that likes to plan the whole day out. Regardless, have fun!

Went again yesterday. Some more thoughts:

- The Great Goofini is most definitely for kids. But also maybe a good starter coaster for people who won't ride them. My GF has always been nervous on them but went on this last night and liked it. It only has one real curve/dip.

- Fantasyland is coming along, but there's nothing to do there yet. We spent more time walking to get there than we did doing anything there.

- Flower and Garden Festival is pretty amazing. I really enjoyed it, much more than I figured I would. The work that goes into it is incredible. Lot of details.

- The projection show on the castle is mind-blowing. I've never seen anything like it. Credit to Disney for coming up with something like that to display on the park's centerpiece. We watched it twice last night and enjoyed it immensely.

- They shouldn't call it park "hopping". More like park 5K, especially if you get to Disney late, see no trams and are parked at the back of the lot near the Ferrari driving track. That was a grueling walk leaving Epcot, parking back there and walking up. "Hop" my ###.

- Went to dinner at the Rose and Crown. Great beer selection, good fish and chips but I was served a horrible entree. I got the grilled tenderloin and fish, and while the fish was nice, the steak was rare. Like, not cooked rare. I prefer my steak med rare, but I couldn't even cut this thing. I can't imagine even the most novice of chefs sending something like that out. It was ridiculous. They did comp it though and the waitress was excellent.

Booked a reservation for <180 days out, and of course Ohana is booked solid before 9:30. Am I screwed, or what? Best advice for trying to get a res?

Keep trying GB. I can book on May 3rd and am really hoping the same thing doesn't happen to me after my last experience not getting in
