Disney Vacation (4 Viewers)

Spent a week at BLT with the family in early March. Weather was absolutely perfect, sunny and high 70s all week. Didn't seem too crowded at the parks, but I haven't been since I was a kid and we were preparing for the worst.

As I think someone said earlier in the thread, Disney really gets the small things right. The pool at BLT was closed while we were there, so we headed to the pool at the Contemporary first thing one morning. We arrived as they were opening the pool. One of the lifeguards came over and asked my 6 and 2 year olds if they could help them with something. They gave them Mickey gloves, did a dance and once they threw their arms in the air, the water slide and fountains "magically" turned on. My 6 year old had the same look on her face as she does on Xmas morning. My wife is already planning the return trip.
thats awesome...I caught them doing that on my last trip....very funny to watch. What a great magical experience for them.

here's some videos I (very badly) filmed.

@odin33  Ok...let me throw you a curve ball, if you really want to stay Deluxe but cost is a concern (when is it not), you may want to look at renting DVC points. IMO, it is a great way to live like a king, and pay like a mid level royal advisor.

Now I say curve ball, b/c its a whole different way of pricing a room, its point based—each hotel has a point chart that values different room types and seasons. Its a bit confusing, but in most cases you will save money vs booking direct. The downside is that you will not be eligible for random room discounts or free dining incentives (but these are always threatened to not happen).

I highly recommend you research and rent through a reputable company and not through ebay or other time share swap sites. David's DVC is the best from what I hear. We are DVC members so I really cant tell you what the going out of pocket rate is, but I remember before we bought in, that a week in the summer at Bay Lake was over $6K for a theme park view studio.

some of your other Qs:

yes, you can see the fireworks from Bay Lake IF you have a theme park view room. That resort is like a 1/2 circle and the inside rooms face the pool and lake behind the main building. They even pipe the music into the room on a special TV Channel during the show. The view is more of a side view though (this was from our room) but you are up high. Contrasting the Polly or Grand flow, you are more straight on to the castle, but you are watching from the ground level.

For the groceries, as mentioned there are great services that will deliver right to the resort and be there when you check in. There is a service charge, but its generally worth it depending on the order. It is tough to make a 'quick trip' bc disney offers you great bus service directly from the hotel to your resort (you don't even have to get your luggage). The down side is that it aint stopping at WalMart for snacks.  IF you decide to stay at a DVC room, studios have small kitchen areas and 1 bedrooms and up have full kitchens and laundry machines right in the room. So delivering cereal, milk and other things can help you save on overall food costs. Plus, we usually have a case of water or Gatorade delivered for the stay. Also, there is Amazon Pantry if you are a prime member.

As for food and swag....think the prices are similar to your closest Six Flags or similar. $25-30 for shirts, $45-50 for sweatshirts, $95 for jackets. We dont buy much stuff anymore, so I dont keep my eyes on it. For food, we always buy the dining plan. As said before the 1TS, 1QS and 1Snack is more then enough for us and surprisingly we always have a few credits left over. People debate the pros/cons/expense of the dining plan, but for me I love that I dont have to go into my pocket for each meal. Its all bought and paid for before I get there. So if the kids want some popcorn and we already used the snack credit, so what? I dont have to penny pinch and worry when I'm there.

How long is Odin going?  If you are staying for an entire week you may want to consider staying at 2 hotels.  Maybe even do a few days at Universal.

Let's call it a week, I can stretch it a few more days, but a week is sounding about right. 2 at MK, 2 at Epcot, 1 each at both AK and HS giving me a little wiggle room/down time.

Looked last night and it's looking like a moderate hotel is going to be the option. Poly and contemp are putting me at 8-9500 (flight, meal plan, hopper, etc). I'll fake a trip at the low seasons tonight to see if the needle moves much. What would be the cheapest timeframe to look at? Will also check other airports as Cincy is notoriously expensive.

Anyone have anything negative to say about port orleans? Seems most think it's a very good experience. How bout the wilderness one. The bunk beds would be a thrill for my oldest, but certainly not a determining factor.

I'm not sure about the cheapest time of year, but you would definitely want to avoid any blackout dates.  You can find them by searching Disney season pass blackout dates.  It's basically all of the times kids aren't out of school. Winter/Spring/part of summer break.

If your kids swim you may want to avoid the colder FL months.  Nov-Feb.  Most of the pools are heated, so you may be able to swim in the colder months depending on the weather.

Was just coming to post this. Here is the link.

Apparently its going to be capped at 3000 guests, exclusive meet and greets and a select group of attractions will be open.

sounds really expensive for 3 hours, but given the price it costs for some dessert parties and other hard ticket events, I guess it fits.

Cost: $149 per person plus tax (unknown if it included daytime admission)
Dates:  April 14, 21, 28.  May 5, 8, 12,19
On Sale:  April 6, 2016

On the admission: I doubt it will be including the MK admission b/c what about AP holders and others with ticket packages. I don't see a discount for those
Sales for the first night of this were such a dud Disney sent out invitations to some DVC members to attend for free.

I'm sure it's a pipe dream, but maybe a few more things like this and Disney will realize they've reached saturation point on all these Pay-for extras.

The Disney travel agent site has had these dates published for the Free Dining promotion, but then removed.

• 8/23-10/1/2016
• 11/15-11/21/2016
• 11/26-11/28/2016
• 12/10-12/21/2016

And there are indications that the promotion will officially be announced next week.

H/T to Shannon at WDW Prep School.

As we've read and discussed here, expect the Free Dining rooms to get snapped up quickly, and don't be surprised if some resorts aren't included in the promotion at all.    IIRC they've excluded Riverside from free DDP before.

Remember, to get one of the Free Dining rooms you have to check in during one of the windows.  You will get free DDP your whole trip even if you stay beyond one of the windows.  It's the checkin date that matters.  If a free dining window opens during your stay, you might be able to split your booking into two separate reservations and get a Free Dining for the second booking.

Yeah, I'm looking at the Mid-Nov dates. Question though: the kids usually like to hit the pool at the resort at night. Would it be too cold to do that around that time?

The pools themselves will be heated.  They target about 80 degrees for pool water temp.  The challenge will be getting back to the room without a chilly feeling - expect the low temps that time of year to be in the 55-60 ballpark with (by Florida standards) low humidity.

Ok, they'll live with the heated pool.

Next question: the Christmas lights should be up by than, right?

The Christmas decorations start going up November 2.  The resorts will all have their Christmas trees up by mid-November for sure.

MK's goal is to have all the park decorations up by the first Christmas Party evening.  But there's one exception - the big Christmas tree in the Main Street Circle won't go up until after they've finished the Christmas Day Parade TV taping.

Over in Epcot, all the decorations should be up by mid-November, but the Christmas Storytellers (Workd Showcase shows telling and demonstrating Christmas traditions from around the world) might not have started yet.  The Candlelight Processional show season usually begins around the end of November.

That mid-November window is great because you get a lot of the Christmas flavor of the parks but the Christmas crowds haven't started rolling in yet. Weather is usually pretty reliable, too: 75-80 during the day, 55-60 at night, maybe some rain but no crazy heat/humidity and low risk of cold snaps.

I've stayed at Port Orleans Riverside multiple times.  It's a great resort if you have a car with you.  Riverside is a long string of small buildings, which tends to keep things quiet at night, and if you have a car you park really close to your room.  Easy to drive from Riverside to Epcot, DHS, and AK (parking at the parks is free if you stay on-site), easy to park at the main Riverside building with the restaurants and by the signature pools.  Water taxi service to Port Orleans French Quarter and Disney Springs - I like hopping of at FQ, running in for an order of beignets, then catching the next boat to Disney Springs.  Even with a car, I recommend busing it to MK.  It's about a ten-minute bus ride from Riverside to MK, and the buses drop you off at the actual MK gate.  Driving to MK means parking at the MK lot, a tram ride to the Ticketing & Transportation Center, then a ferryboat or monorail ride to the actual MK gate, a process that can take up to an hour.

The kids may want to play at the pools with the big slides and such.  Riverside has several satellite no-frills pools with laundry facilities in the pool houses.  These pools are heated, usually not crowded, great for a quick swim if you just like to hop in and splash around for a few minutes.  And if you need to do laundry during your stay, great way to keep occupied nearby while the machines run.

Without a car, the Riverside resort can get pretty spread out, with long walks to food, pools, and bus stations.  The buses are reliable but do create extra walking and the potential for standing during the bus ride at peak usage times.

Wilderness Lodge is gorgeous.  Great northwoods/Pacific Northwest feel.  Hope you like boats.  Boat service to MK is the way to go.  Can also take the boat to the Contemporary and Fort Wilderness.  Easy bus service to the other parks.  Great food - Whispering Canyon Cafe is one of my favorite family restaurants on the entire WDW property.  Artist Point is a "signature dining" restaurant that is a favorite of foodies.  It is expensive to stay there, and given how much time you'll want to be spending at the parks, it might not be worth the extra money.

If you see any abbreviations you're unfamiliar or find the jargon a bit too inside baseball from me or anyone else here, feel free to call timeout and ask for clarification.  We're a really friendly group and want to arm you with the best possible information.

I thought it was taking over part of tom sawyer island behind frointeerland, but I have not been to DL in a while. Prob better answered by @Bruce Dickinson

edit to add...it looks like thats Big Thunder behind and to the left of the Att-Att

Yeah, relative to park entry the Disneyland Star Wars Experience is across the back and back-left of the park.  They're getting rid of a ranch/roundup space where they did a lot of character greets, holiday events, and an all-you-can-eat BBQ menu similar to Whispering Canyon.

They're shutting down Tom Sawyer's Island during the construction.  Don't know if Star Wars is annexing some of the space or if they just want to keep the construction as hidden as possible.

The layout of the "left" side of the park is a bit different at DL than MK to accommodate New Orleans Square and Critter Country.  Big Thunder in DL is kinda-sorta in the spot where Haunted Mansion is in MK, and until the SW EXP there was a path past Big Thunder to get to the ranch and eventually Fantasyland.

Gonna miss that path.  Had a brief encounter with the Lopez twins on that path one night.  (For y'all who don't follow NBA, there's a pair of 7-foot twins from California who play in the NBA and are Disney fanatics - they were roommates in college and their dorms and apartments were floor-to-ceiling with Disney swag.)

I read that they are using the back part of TSI and rerouting the river there.

tough, b/c it seems like an odd place geographically—going from cowboys to...well space cowboys lol. I'm sure being closer to Tomorrowland would have e been better, but not sure about the park layout and what backs up to everything.

We've settled on Mid Nov or mid December...would love to hit up the free dining.   thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, we decided on end of September. The wife wants to see the Christmas lights in November, but we ultimately decided September so the kids can hit up the water park and whatnot.

I didn't even think my kids know there are water parks down there.  Hope to keep it that way for a while.

Christmas really is pretty cool there.  I would try and do it at some point.

Does anyone know if the Mickey Christmas party will be going on ion Mid November?

Thanks for this, BD.

If anyone happens to see this promotion go live, please post in the thread. I'm hawking the Oct. 1st date for the beginning of a week-long stay,  so I need to be ready to roll. TIA.

Certainly will be. Think it starts the first week of November.

They tried.   Tomorrowland part of the park is almost up against a city street, and using the backside transition from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland would have forced rerouting the monorail and uprooting/removing Autopia, which is pretty much landmark status now as one of the few attractions that's been there since '55.

  at the bolded. Same sentiment here.

We have always gone mid Nov and hit the Christmas party. Great week, that week or 2 before Thansgiving.

Haven't announced the MVMCP 2016 schedule yet, but last year the MVMCP season opener was on November 7, and had them about every other day or so through 11/18.

So my parents just bought into the Disney vacation club.  200 points.  They want to "share" it with the family, mainly my sister.  Pretty sure they feel bad for her cause I'm about to take my family once a year and she doesn't, but that's a whole other story I won't waste your time on.

My folks say it should work out to where I'll get a 5 nights free and the Poly then the next year she'll get the 5 nights.  Is that pretty accurate about how it will work out?

They way they make it sound is like I should have signed myself up for this vacation club. $1200 a year, but you get 5 nights at the Poly.  I feel like I'm missing something here.  I don't see the vacation club talked about much in this thread, I'm sure I've missed some of it though.

DVC is one of the main topics in this thread. Ill let others like glvsad give you all the details even though he is a resale. We looked into it and it was not for us. We bought a beach condo instead and pay to go to Disney as we dont go every year

I'm a DVC owner, and your parents are somewhat correct.

the whole system is based on points (of which your parents have 200 of). in the course of the year, those points can be spent all at one trip, split up over a few trips, banked for the next year and/or borrowed from the next year.

The polly is prob their "Home resort" and there is some advantages to booking there, however the points can be used at any DVC property. For instance, we own at Old Key West, however this trip we are spending 1/2 the trip at Animal Kingdom Lodge and 1/2 at Bay Lake tower.  Thing is, each resort, room type and time of year has their own point value—a studio room in the off season is less points per night then during the summer. Likewise, there is a point difference for a 1 bedroom at Old Key (much older resort) vs a 1 Bdrm at Yacht Club at the same time of year. Here is a page that lists all of the points for each resort.

So by that logic, yes, you can spend 5 nights at the Polly, but for the same # of points you can prob do a longer stay at Old Key West. It's a give and take.

As for singing yourself up...there is a pretty big upfront cost. For 200 points, if you parents bought direct from Disney (vs a resold contract) they were paying prob $160-180 per point up front (you can do the math). Then yes, there are the yearly dues of $4-6.50 per point (depending on the home resort) that is due every year.

So you are not really getting the room for $1200 a year, you have to figure in the break even point of the initial investment.

Being a DVC member does offer you some discounts, but as a 'guest' of your parents (the owners) you wouldn't be entitled to them w/o them being there. Retail discounts, special member events, and annual pass discounts...stuff like that. Not sure if they put your names on the deeds or not.

thats the basics...if you think it may be something you would be interested in buying in to, let me know and i can walk you through the different methods. There is direct from disney, and also resold contracts. Both have pros and cons—price difference being the biggest. I can give you the 411 on that if you like.

Be sure to tell you parents "Welcome home" from us. It's the cool guy DVC owners way of identifying ourselves b/c we are better then everyone else...lol, just kidding.

lol...was writing it as you posted!

Thanks for the run down.  I know its mentioned here, but the basics of how it worked was never clear thru reading.

I'm guessing they can pass it down to us.  Sounded like its a 50 year deal, they're both pushing 70.

Now to ask the uncomfortable question about who gets it first...me or my sister???  I'm ready to pull the trigger on a mid December trip.  Mid December was considerably cheaper than Mid Nov.  I figured they would be about the same.

I always appreciate the input you guys give.

NP.

w/o asking specifics, I don't see a reason why you count use it first being you were ready to go and she (apparently) doesn't have the means and a WDW trip wasn't even on her radar. But thats family crud and all your biz.

one caveat — find out what your parents "Use year" is. Every contract has a use year where the points reset. So its not a Expire on Dec 31s and renew on Jan 1. Use years are spread out across the year. For example, ours is November, so my points expire/renew on Nov 1. So theatrically, I can use my 2016 vacation points up to Oct 31. Come home, turn around and start my 2017 vacation points on Nov 1.

Use year is pretty important, b/c we travel only in the summer, so our points are always available to us when we can 1st book which is in December (7 months away from travel)

Your parent's use year will be a big measuring stick to when the points will come available for both you and then the following year, for your sister.

yeah, my sister usually draws the pity card.  We'll see how it shakes out.

Trying to wait and see if free dining willl be available in Mid December.  That current 30% off offer they have now looks like it ends June 1.  Would you expect the free dining to come available about that time?  I've never paid attention to all these little things.

Not sure if its been discussed yet (shocked if it hasn't), but Disney Cruise >>>>>>>>>> Disney World.

ok...here where DVC is a kick in the pants...you can't get free dining or any other room offers. Yeeeay...loyalty.  So if you are going on your parents points, don't concern yourself with working around those type of promotions.

I dont feel that way at all. Maybe I just got a bum cruise because we were not able to go to the private island. But if given the chance to do a world visit vs a cruise, I wouldn't even consider the cruise.

I will also add that outside of the disney stuff, the cruise was no better than Norwegian or dare I say Carnival.

Yeah, I already have the funds earmarked for our Dec. trip.  Might be the nice little brother and let my sister take the first trip.  assuming she does it in 2016!

OOF.... I guess if you like Cruises.  I hate cruises. Hate being herded and stuck with the same sheep while nauseous and at the mercy of the next disease outbreak....

Also the cruise I was on, the Main pool was about 14x14 and pea soup - the adult pool was a little better.

I'd also say if you're kid is under 5 I can see this as well - For characters and such.

Cruise ppl did say the Disney Cruise was one of the better cruises but......................... damn I hate cruises.   :yucky:

I'll never be on a cruise again. Like Ever.
