Disney Vacation (1 Viewer)

Its all good and I totally understand. If it was something that you said "In the next 3 years we want to go" I'd say wait. But you are right, kids are perfect age (mine are similar) and you will have a blast regardless.

Fell free to ask any questions, the key to enjoying disney is being prepared.
Thanks, appreciate it.

Those we're awesome.  I remember the first time i went as an Adult 2 years ago I thought everything was so different.  I started googling as we sat out on the balcony of the contemporary and read for an hour or two about the history.  Really awesome to see those videos.  thanks for posting.
I didn't go as a kid until the early 80's and we never stayed on property. I don't remember much detail but I do remember things like the skyway, 2000 leagues and some of this old extinct attractions. We did the who thing—Disney, Sea World, etc. So to me, its amazing to see how much Disney has grown to be such and all encompassing destination from aback then.

I was a cast member in 1995, so the Disney I really know best is very similar to what it is now. But the difference between opening and now is monumental.

I thought the monsters inc dark ride was charming in that it felt like an original ride.
It's a clever idea.  The original plan was to make the ride more of a coaster featuring the doors "moving" you from one land to another, but they ended up flattening and slowing it down to make it safe for little kids.

There's heat on DCA to add Marvel content.  They can't do it in Orlando (my current second-favorite "in perpetuity" contract dispute behind the Spirits Of St Louis owners still receiving NBA TV money) and when Star Wars Land opens in Disneyland in 2018 park attendance will get really unbalanced.  DCA closed the gap nicely with CarsLand and World Of Color, but adding Marvel stuff will be a nice way to stay close with DL.

A few long-term DCA rumors....

Tower Of Terror will go dark this fall for a Summer 2017 rebranding as "Guardians Of The Tower".  DCA will retire the Twilight Zone Hotel theme and make it a Guardians Of The Galaxy ride, just in time for GOTG2 in Summer 2017.

Literal test balloons have been spotted over the Stage 17, Stage 12, and Monsters Inc dark ride buildings.  This is testing potential heights and turns for a Marvel-themed rollercoaster to go into that space.  No word if the Monsters Inc ride will survive the makeover, but it's not a popular ride.  Planned delivery is Summer 2020.

Timon parking lot will still close and DCA will expand into it and build something.  Probably Marvel-themed.

DCA has a Plan B in case Soarin' Over The World flops.  They quietly digitally remastered one of the Soarin' Over California prints and have a protocol in place to convert one of the two theaters back to the original Soarin' Over California in 24 hours.

Paradise Garden Grill closed with no fanfare or formal announcement.  IMO it was a great menu, but a crap location that is hard to spot even if you're walking right by it.  Plans are to make it a seasonal pop-up, with exotic flavors during Food & Wine, Halloween & Christmas stuff during holidays, and a second spot for a burgers/fries/tenders stand during the summer.

My favorite thing about the Marvel deal at WDW is that the Marvel store at Disney Springs is called.....Superhero Headquarters. :lmao:

So stupid that they can't even use the franchise name anywhere on property. I imagine Fox or Universal of whomever will never let that go.

In terms of not going back after this trip, my wife and I both agree that it is a pretty expensive trip and while I'm sure the kids will love it we would rather spend additional vacations in future years on a trip to Australia to visit my wife's family and trips to Europe/South America.  They are 5 & 7 right now and in speaking with others they have said this will be great ages to take the kids.  More power to those that enjoy it multiple times but I'm pretty committed to one and done.  I will take a lot of enjoyment in seeing my kids really enjoying themselves but the whole Disney experience in and of itself won't do much for me (obviously I could change my mind after the trip but I know myself pretty well at this point in life).
Those are just about optimal for ages but with one caveat - depending on how big your kids are they will most likely not be able to ride everything.

Check here for height requirements - https://touringplans.com/magic-kingdom/attractions/height-requirements

If they are on the small side then I could see waiting a year or two.

You will have a blast either way as there's plenty to do but I know it would be tough if the 7-yr old got to ride all the big rides and the 5-yr old had to sit out - you can always split up but if this is your only trip you may not want to do that too much.  Just something to keep in mind.

We still haven't made it all the way across the country to DL/DCA so this doesn't really impact me but this sucks IMO - ToT is my favorite ride - the combination of theming, story telling and then the ride itself is just top-notch.  I hate the idea that they would change it just to push the GOTG brand.  If they do something like this at HS I may just skip that park entirely until the new stuff is up and running.  Just my 2 cents.

Disney does not have the rights to use Marvel characters in theme parks east of the Mississippi River in the United States.  Universal has those rights in perpetuity.  Universal isn't playing around on that, either; they enforced the contract when Disney put an Avengers skin on the monorail from TTC to Epcot because that track covers ground inside Epcot.

Thanks, they are 45 & 46 inches right now and I figure both will be above 48" by September.  They are both wimps when it comes to rides as well so I'm thinking stuff like Space Mountain is probably out for us.

What are people's thoughts on Universal Studios?  Sounds like it will be around $800-1000 for the day but my kids love Harry Potter.

Sure - but my problem isn't with GOTG - if they decided to turn ToT in to anything else I wouldn't like it.  Why mess with it, IMO.  You could maybe turn it in to some cool Pixar or SW ride but it's unnecessary IMO.

ToT doesn't fit into the brand.

I love the care put into that ride, but #### getting on that ####. Twice was enough. ?

Don't like the wait or don't like the ride?  It's one of the line queues that I don't mind waiting in.  Usually cool (unless it's the middle of summer) and the theming is outstanding - I notice something new almost every time.  The ride itself I can understand if you don't like - it's not for everyone.  Personally, I love it - the free fall aspect, the dark, the screaming and Rod Serling waiting for you at the end.  Fantastic.

Line doesn't bother me at all. The drop is just too close to that nightmare I've had one too many times. Lol

At some point they need to close down Small World and get a few cans of paint and carpet at least no>?

I remember as a Kid my Grandmother would save every penny to take us and to her it really was the Greatest Place, She would cry at the site of Mickey... In her mind everything was perfect and spotless you would never see a blemish, a piece of gum, a cracked sidewalk. Man that Ride is in a sad state - I wind up just looking for this but, I see workers book marks, candy wrappers, stains and smell...... Somewhere Grandma weeped  ;)

Also - I know I Blitzed the place and my attack was in and out but, I do feel the whole fast Pass experience is so much different than when I was a kid - Granted we probably spent 5 hours a day on lines as a kid, I just felt like you would spend so much time in each land and absorb every inch - You would probably hit 2 Lands a day and barely miss a thing....

My feeling now is, I'll be back one day to cover what I missed - Not even sure I'd trade those Crazy lines we waited in as kids - It's just..... Different.

Wait - no, no way would I wait in any line over or near an hour...

I'm nostalgic for a lot of things but It's a Small World is not one of them.  I know it will never happen but I'd like to see them take a different spin on the idea of It's a Small World -

some quick top of head ideas:

  • maybe steal the interactive map idea from Spaceship Earth and show where people are from who are riding or have ridden the ride the same day
  • along the same lines - use the magic band tech to have the ride show video clips (somewhat like Soarin) of areas where people are from - I'm from Atlanta - maybe they show a video of Stone Mountain - personlize it
  • play parts of national anthems

Wife wants to go to the Very Merry Christmas Party on our upcoming November trip - any reviews?  Was it worth the price?
Yes, both are great. For nothing else it gives you time to ride stuff with little to no lines. If you have kids, they do a great job with dance parties. We must have spent an hour dancing with Bullseye, Woody and Jessie. Christmas party they had dancing with step sisters. Stuff like that can not be done on a regular day because there are just too many people there. Plus there is "free" hot chocolate and cookies. One year they even gave away free 5x7 pictures. They dont do that anymore

3rd year with the bus system and I'm done. Soooo many people who aren't handicapped riding in scooters holding up the process. Have much more to say when I get home. Having a blast again though.

I ranted on that last time i was in Downtown Disney. My wife,  s-i-l, and myself were waiting for the bus back to the resort in the pouring rain. Was probably a good half hour. We board and these fatties roll up on their little scooters and demand that the driver stop any others from boarding. The bus was already at capacity so, of course, the fatties demanded others get off, because, reasons. The driver refused, but asked if we could move together tighter. Wasn't happening,  we were already jammed and we told him so. If they didn't have to get those stupid scooters on, maybe they'd fit. Long story short,  we were sitting in the bus for a half hour while they whined and whined some more. I was ready to get out and flip their whale boats over.

yea, there is a real ####ty policy where the scooters have to load on the bus first. I get it, b/c it takes a lot of work to load and secure them, but it gets abusive when there is a whole line (2-3 buses worth) of people and then an ECV pulls up and gets on the very next bus b/c they are near the back door. Plus, they are only supposed to bring 1 additional person with them, but I've seen groups of 5-6 in there group jump on with them.

Overall, I try to have sympathy for the ECV riders, but when they start jerking around with that type of stuff, it gets hard to hold your tongue.

WOW....missed that the first time I read it.....F that!!

Agree on all counts. Love the TZ theme, that a good deal of the wait is inside and the ride itself. Win-Win-Win. First time I rode this with my 11yo daughter she was asking what the Twilight Zone was all about. When we got home we fired up Netflix and she was hooked.

Changing the ride to GOTG really stinks.

from what I understand, the DCA version of TOT is a lot less themed then the WDW version, correct @Bruce Dickinson? I've never been, but I hear its only the drops, not the whole middle show scene.

So while I don't agree with the overlay, I would mind it less if only happened in CA....sorry west coasters.

This drove me insane when we've stayed on property.  One time we had to wait for another bus when a family jumped ahead because one of them was on a scooter.

Oh, and I'm sure I'm repeating myself for the 10th time but the buses, in general, are just a PITA in my opinion.  You just seem to waste a lot of time and you can't get around the whole resort efficiently.  I understand for some it's the only option but even when staying on property I usually drive.  The one thing that was pretty awesome was once my kids got older I let the older two stay at the parks and ride the bus back.

Uber....just saying
Hmmmmm. $7 from port Orleans to MK. I would pay triple that coming back after the fireworks. (It'll probably be 3x surcharge then)

Btw, I've been very positive about port Orleans riverside, but at every park they have had the longest bus lines at the end of the night. The first year it wasn't like that, but the past two have been very bad. I guess if I add $20 a day for Ubers, it's still a good value.

works just like a taxi. They can get in and out of the parking lots free and you just wait in the parking lot for them, some places have a taxi pick up area.

with Uber, you get the drivers cell phone number, so you can be texting or talking to him as he pulls in.

Plus, the cost transaction is handled right through the app, so you don't even have to worry about having cash.

I'm sure you can....I've never needed one b/c we stay at Bay Lake and mostly do nights at MK.

beauty of the app is that you can log in and see who's around and how much it will cost before actually wording it.

Thanks, I do have kids.  5 (girl) 4 (boy) 2 (girl), you still think it would be good for them?  Seems awfully expensive ($377.02 after tax for the 4 required tickets), which is almost as much as a 1-day MK ticket by itself.

the way a lot of people work it is that they plan their "party day" to align with a non-park day. Stay by the pool, hit Disney springs, etc. If you do that, adjust your park tickets accordingly...so if you are going for 5 days, only buy a 4 day ticket and then the party tickets. With the party tickets, they let you in earlier then the posted start time, so you are getting more then just the party hours.

Thanks. Know the uber app well, just not the rules of Disney.

Disney is very Taxi/Uber friendly. We order taxies all the time from the resort bell hop and they are there in 2 minutes.

The line for the monorail was so deep last Saturday that you could have walked back to your car quicker. I can't imagine how nice it would be to call in an uber. #### I would call in an uber just to take me to the parking lot.

So my family is booked from Sept 24th-October 1st staying at the Polynesian.  I was able to get pretty cheap direct flights on JetBlue and I think we are doing the Halloween party.  Biggest thing we need to decide is if we hit Universal Studios one of the days, leaning towards it but just want to be sure it makes sense with 5&7 year old kids.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on my original post.

IMO 5&7 is too young for Universal.  There's some good little kid stuff, but there's so much there the kids will either not be tall enough for or will scare them.  But let's walk through it:

IOA: Suess Landing is awesome, some good rides and fun stuff to see... Lost Continent will be a bore... Hogsmeade will have the Hippogriff coaster, and if they are into HP will want the interactive wands (plan about $40 apiece), but the kids will probably be too small for Tri-Wizard Cup coaster and Forbidden Journey (IMO the best attraction in either Universal Orlando park).... There's a kid-friendly Jurassic Park ride but the main one there is pretty scary... don't think Kong is open yet... there's a fantastic Dudley Do-Right log flume and a Popeye river raft ride but the weather might not agree with a water rides where you WILL get VERY wet... Hulk coaster is closed for now, Spidey is awesome but a little scary, kids too mall for Doom's Space Shot, meet-and-greets with X-Men and such are cool if the kids are into them.

Studios: Terminator probably too scary for the kids... Minion Mayhem is hilarious and kid-friendly... Shrek 4D is alright if the kids are into those movies... Transformers is violent and difficult to follow if you don't know the characters, to an unfamiliar like me it was just room after room of robots hitting each other and saying stuff I couldn't understand... ET ride is fun but dated, only do it if kids liked the movie... Simpsons ride is really funny... Men In Black is a scarier, tougher to follow version of Buzz Lightyear but you do get to shoot stuff... Diagon Alley is amazing if you're a Harry Potter fan and the Gringotts ride isn't too scary, train from Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade (need a 2-park ticket to ride it) is really fun but need be into HP to appreciate... Mummy is way too scary for little kids... Rip Rocket is fantastic (the straight vertical climb at the start is a trip, and you pick a song to listen to during the ride) but too intense for little kids... evening movie clips and fireworks show is oddly not family-friendly...

What else do you do for vacation with a 1 and 4 year old and live on the gulf coast?

Just setup a quick trip to Orlando in June.  My 4yo wanted to go to a place in Destin we went last summer just for the lazy river.  We are not really beach people so 3-400 a night for a pool is crazy to me, but he really wanted the lazy river.  I googled best lazy river in Florida.  The JW Marriott in Orlando came up.  It's attached to the Ritz so I can play their golf course and it's on a lake so I can fly fish.  As of now we are doing 1 day at MK, 1 day at Legoland, and the remaining days at the pool, golf, etc... We will sneak a trip to DS in and maybe an extra day at MK.  So a few questions:

I am am trying to score brunch at Tusker.  Do I need passes if I can get a reservation?

Can I link our magic bands from our last trip to a one day pass?

yes, if you want to eat at any place within a Disney park, you need tickets for that park (or a park hopper)

Not sure about the Magic Bands. This is our first trip with them
