This was my last time. My kids know that and they’re ok with it as well. I’ll take them other places for vacations but Disney is out. Price/benefit just isn’t there anymore imo and I felt stressed most of the time. I tried to not project that on to the kids so they had a good time but I just can’t do it again.

we've been fortunate to go every year for the last few years while my kids were younger. Now at 12 and 16 we are looking at other places.

We own DVC, so not going is not really an option for us but we are modifying our vacations. Planning mainly more resort focused stays with only a few days in the parks. Staggering our trips an spending the points on larger, more luxurious rooms. The kids don't "Need" to hit every ride every-time anymore. We use to be AP holders and would be in the parks each day, all day, however our last trip we didn't plan on entering a park until after 3pm. 

I am looking forward to a few years from now when my wife is retired (public school teacher) and we can swing down for a mid week trip b/c we have the room basically paid for, and enjoy a flower and garden festival or festival of the arts during the winter/early spring months when normally we would not have been able to get away.

On top of that, Disney has gotten really good at aligning staffing and ride timing to the attendance that even when there might be less people there technically, the lines stay fairly full and it feels more crowded than it is. 
 

Yeah they have. We did early entry in November at Magic Kingdom and it turned out there were like 4 rides open. 7DMT, Space Mountain, and like 2 kiddie rides. Predictably, the 2 rollercoasters were mobbed. Everything else just kind of trickled opening with no real predictability. It was very frustrating.

Welp we were supposed to be going to Disney on Sunday but my daughter's rapid COVID test just came back positive.  I'm pretty sure PCR will confirm it and I'm also pretty sure the rest of us have it.  Disney and Spirit airlines policy says 14 days quarantine required.  Hopefully we can get a refund or at least reschedule for free.

looks like the refurbishments at Fanstasmic are moving forward. The moat has just been refilled after months of being emptied. No official dates released for the show, but there will be some changes to the story once it opens

My daughter wants to go visit colleges in March so we're hitting up Florida on the 11th. After that, we're going to MK and Epcot during the weekend. I'm psyched because I wasn't sure if Disney was in the cards at all because the wife chose our vacation destination this year.

What is the deal with dining reservations. @glvsav37have you heard anything on all the pods you listen to about bots being run for reservations. I ask because something really odd happened the other night. 
I knew getting reservations for dining would be tough due to the fact that we booked the trip 40 days before we went. Ok, no problem. We will grab whatever is there. Grabbed the jungle canteen for MK day, Via Napoli for a late lunch on Epcot day and decided on booking nothing for HS day. 
My daughter was really bummed I wasn’t able to get Be our Guest (despite none of us loving the meal, but she likes the ambiance) So in good dad mode, I was on a constant refresh of the app searching for BOG. Nothing came up for a good 2 days and then finally, a 2:45 lunch pops up. I try to grab it, someone beats me to it. 20 mins later the same time pops up. Again, someone beats me. Then it happens and third and fourth time. I was finally quick enough on the fourth attempt. I find it hard to believe people just happened to be on and grabbed it, decided it was too expensive or whatever and threw it back 3 times. I’m thinking someone is running a program to nab the good stuff and offering it to clients. If they say no, they toss it back. Is that even possible?

anyway, I’m now on the lookout for a Beaches and Cream lunch for the day we leave. We decided to not do a 4th day in the park and just relax, maybe Disney Springs. It’s been a week and not one reservation has even popped up for Beaches and Cream. I know it’s small, but I’ll keep trying. 
 

Also, my wife is dead set on not buying individual LL and I am ready to do it to make my life more convenient. She doesn’t want to give them the satisfaction of getting more money from us. I’m just like, whatever, it’s $40 and I’m not waiting in line for 180 minutes. Win for us

Well, I checked in here because my wife's sister and mom (they live in Michigan) are putting a lot of pressure on us to do a family vacation there this year in July.  I'm out.  I can't handle crowds like this and I get anxiety just reading these posts.  Add in heat, humidity, bugs and Covid in a state that doesn't seem to take the virus seriously and I'm just not bending on this one.  Plus, two kids in college, a difficult flight from Portland to Orlando and the outlay of money for this just makes my stomach churn.

I mean the bolded seems like it would would be a no go for you even if the parks were not generally busy and all the other planning that goes with it. So no need to even try and change your mind. 

that said, if they were pushing for a family vacation, you could pull it off by planning only 1 or 2 park days with them and then spend the rest of the trip relaxing or seeing other sights. We do this with extended family that may be there when we visit, we plan a dinner and some park time together, but then "see-ya later."

But regardless, I'm not running to the bookie and putting money on this trip panning out based on the above. lol

Scary thing is it’s so busy and people are so rabid Disney, they could charge much more. I’d pay more…….a lot more. What I’d pay more for is either A. One day a week in the park that costs double but they 1/2 the crowd and keep staffing the same or B. A real lightning lane where you don’t have to book a time, can go through one lightning lane after another and they only sell a limited number of them

Main things that annoyed me

1. the crowds and wait times obviously. Be fine if I had older kids but my little ones were a handful with nothing to do for an hour plus. 
2. the ridiculously crowded shuttle buses. They need more buses, particularly at opening and closing. Covid aside, it’s uncomfortable and annoying even if covid isn’t still a thing. 
3. dropping the Disney bus from the airport. My favorite thing about Disney was you get to the airport and everything was basically taken care of from there. The bus isn’t nearly as good now, even though it’s still the same company. You have to get your own bags now, it costs $32 a person and it doesn’t run as smoothly. Bus back to the airport was late……we ended up just taking an Uber

4. thought lightning lane was overrated. It’s basically fast pass but for $60 a day for our group, I thought it would be more useful. You want a lightning lane pass mid day, your looking at times in the early evening for anything good. 
5. having to be on my phone for most of the day. For me, that’s not a vacation. Makes it very hard to be in the moment. I’m not even sure it helped much. You notice ride A has a shorter wait time than usual for the day…….everyone else noticed that too and by the time you get there it’s twice as long. 
6. even with a mask you couldn’t get good pictures with Mickey, Minnie etc. they had a rope you stood in front of and the cast member was well behind. Be understandable if they didn’t load 100 people into a shuttle bus. 
 

that said, kids will be talking about it for months and at the end of the day it wasn’t a vacation for me. And as always the cast members were great.

I'll be honest, I have not followed the dining situation in a while.  I know a lot of people are complaining that they cant get reservations, so there could be something...could be a labor or supply shortage where they may keeping turnover low on most nights. IDK. I was last there alone in Nov and I couldn't get a table for 1 anywhere in Disney Springs. So I feel you. 

I would be there is also some bots running scripts snatching up what few reservations there are. I've used services in the past to "crawl" the days/locations I wanted for me. 

As for the LL purchase, I'm sorry to tell your wife, but you may not like it, but you'll hate not using it.  Stick it to the man all she wants, the onyl loser would be your family sitting out in the sun for 2 hours on some of these rides. To make it worse, I've been reading that the LL-to-standby ratio is like 85%, meaning they'll let in over 85 guests into the queue before letting the next 15 on standby in. I waited on a ride at studios and counted at least 100 guests go though LL before the next person on standby was allowed past the merge point. Was a good 25 min before I moved 5 feet. 

Does not leave a good taste in the mouth of us legacy guests but it is what it will be. Conform or wait.

Something seems off here in the application of Genie + and LL

We used it in DL and thought it was awesome. BUT, it is a smaller park with less people. Getting a FP back to back to back was never an issue and we just kept walking right onto rides. 

It seems like the reverse is true for DW and it is causing a build up in the standby line and I’ve heard even in the LL lines even though it’s supposed to be staggered.

FP did the same thing to many rides when they rolled it out across the whole park. Attractions like Pirates come to mind where it was generally a 20 min wait before FP and now is consistently 40+.

The biggest issue with the the new LL is that it can easily be manipulated behind the scenes in real time. They openly admitted years ago that the "next gen project" which LL and Genie+ is now a product of, was going to play a lot into daily crowd control and flow. 

for the last few years we made our FP selections 2 months in advance. Before that, there were a predetermined number of passes put in the ticket machines. Now all FP's are claimed day of and if the programers want to keep groups of people away from a particular side of the park, they can release LL opportunities to select guests in return stuffing the LL and extending the standby line. General guests will see a 180 min wait at an attraction and possibly decide to go to the other side of the park. Or they could shut down LL distribution and force people to spend 3 hours at an E ticket attraction and clear some line elsewhere. 

there are lots of manipulation opportunities when you can do things in real time. There are countless stories of people waling through their day refreshing their phone and magically something they were considering pops up. Its no coincidence, its someone backstage adjusting availability to spread the crowds out.

Both kids have tested positive for Covid.  We made the decision to cancel the trip. Kids were surprisingly fine with it.  Almost a blessing in disguise as neither my wife or I were mentally ready for this trip (both swamped at work).

We ended up rescheduling the trip.  Too many unknowns (e.g.  airline may not let us on, kids may still have symptoms on travel day, etc) and we didn’t want to be stuck eating the cost of the trip.

It’s going to be tough to do everything so you need to prioritize what is important to you. I’m not sure what LL add ons are for each park, but if you can pay for Rise of Resistance and Radiator Springs I would consider doing it. We were there in August and Genie was not out yet. We have done DL with the old fast pass system on the app which was great. We will be using genie for the first time next month so sorry that I can’t help with that. But if you have anything specific you want to ask, don’t hesitate.

Disney vet that has been to WDW close to 30 times.    the wife and I are taking a trip with two couples in September for the F&W festival and after looking into Genie+ I'm not sure we're going to bother.

I'm thinking we'll try Individual Lightning Lanes to pay for one or two headliners and just get there for rope drop, leave before lunch to hang by the pool, and then return in the evening  and take our chances for the rest.

I guess I'm getting old but I just don't have the energy or desire to be glued to my phone to stack up LL for attractions.

Good luck with this.  I tried for literally 9 months once...even using a site someone here recommended (sorry, forget the name).  I finally gave up and scheduled out as far as I could and got a reservation for when the kids got out of school for summer break...summer of 2020    I haven't tried again...stupid COVID.

Face coverings will now be optional for all guest's starting Feb 17

Face masks will be optional for fully vaccinated guests at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland starting February 17 at both indoor and outdoor locations. All guests will be required to wear masks on any Disney transportation.

Good luck with this.  I tried for literally 9 months once...even using a site someone here recommended (sorry, forget the name).  I finally gave up and scheduled out as far as I could and got a reservation for when the kids got out of school for summer break...summer of 2020    I haven't tried again...stupid COVID.

I just got a 1:50 lunch reservation for our last day. Cutting it a little close to when we need to leave but if we do just ice cream, we should be ok

ETA: touring plans emailed and texted that the reservation opened up. So that service came in handy

 I've resigned myself to doing pretty much only quick serves when in the parks and then 2-3 "special meals"

We will be staying at Saratoga so I'm sure we will be dining at Dis Springs often and the good thing with them is that you can use Open Table instead of the the Disney reservation system. Bc/ those locations are not Disney owned, they reserve certain tables for other booking services. 

Also if you want to do T-Rex or Rainforest, get a Landry's Select card. Apparently if you flash it at any of those restaurants, it allows you to skip the line of people waiting and you get the next available table. I have one but have not tried it yet, maybe on this next trip.

I mentioned the Star Wars Galactic Cruiser Hotel thing floppinha and I did...

If any of you see promotional material for it involving real people (currently just cartoon imagery online), please let me know. It's about a month after the shoot, and I have a feeling stuff will be starting to come out soon... and that we're not going to see any of it.

I was going to ask you about this. I looked for a previous post when you mentioned the promotional thing to look for but couldn't find it. Did your daughter get a gig in a Disney shoot?

she booked it for her AND me. so I might end up in some of these as well- I stood next to her and we did stuff together throughout the day.

eta: they flew us (the "talent") from NYC to FL, set us up in a hotel and paid us for the shoot. We got a free trip there and back, and went to Universal on our own dime the next day before flying back.

The shoot was huge though- 3 different shoots, actually... one that was specifically video/film (ours was supposedly just photos).  We got to hang out and engage three of the hotel "experiences", which were pretty cool. And the hotel design was flat out amazing.

That's great! I'm trying to figure out how to sell Disney some of my sculpture. Disney is not an easy art sale as they are bombarded with artist submissions.
