I have seen no duscussion about this, sorry if its a honda, but I did not see it anywhere.

"I recognize this week that it's about Rex Ryan vs. Bill Belichick,” Ryan said, beginning a biting diatribe aimed mostly at the Patriots yesterday. “That's what it's going to come down to. He's going to get everything I have. If he slips at all, we're going to beat him."”

Even Belichick responded, invoking humor when asked about the one-on-one battle---

"I might have a little quickness on him, he's probably got a little strength and power on me, Belichick said. But I don't think either one of us is making any blocks. At least, you won't see me doing that. That's probably a good thing for our team."

I am growing a little disgust with Rex Ryan as his comments make it seem as if the AFC Divisional game is about him? Seriously? Who cares about him, the fans like the NY Jets with or wothout Rex Ryan. I am surprised more people are not pissed at him about that comment. I understand smack talk and was a fan of Ryan for his confidence and ability to poke at the team a bit. I believe that to be his strategy. But everything he says has truth to it. And if he really believes this game is about him, the do the NY Jets faithful have something to worry about?

Or am I just taking it wrong?

ETA: I meant to add the fact that if you notice the statements, is it any wonder why Bill is a 3 time champ and a little more respected!

He's pulling the attention off a shaky QB that's all. You think he REALLY cares about him vs BB? I mean I'm sure he does but not like this. He's keeping attention away from Sanchez. Making it about RR vs BB or RR vs Brady - not ALL WORLD BRADY vs Streaky Sanchez.

It's smart really. Try to deflect having even more pressure placed on a young and inexperianced QB prone to implosions.

Now, he could be smarter about it - the Pats don't need bulletin boatrd motivation. But really, what he said - it's not even bad. And clearly BB - in the running for most humorless coach in the world - thought it amusing this time out.

I don't want to say you are taking it wrong but honestly who cares? Rex is Rex and he talks trash and to be quite honest I think it's refreshing that a coach actually tells you how he really feels. As much as I respect Belichick I could give you all of the answers to his questions before he answers. I can understand how some people are getting tired of Rex but for me I have no problem with the things he says. I also think part of the reason he says some of the things he says is that he feels that it takes some pressure off of his team and puts it all on him so that his players can just go out and play loose. The one problem I have though is how ESPN hangs on every word he says and plays it back 48 times during the course of the week.

:goodposting: Like so many things, it wouldn't be half as annoying if ESPN would just ease back on the throttle by 50%.

It's my belief he's doing this to take all the pressure off his team. He also blamed himself for the last loss. I don't think he's trying to make it about him just to make it about him - afterall it's not like the media is not going to come to him waiting for a quote in any case - he's doing it to shield his players (and likely Sanchez in particular).

ESPN really aint on it from what I seen. And another thing is since Rex is Rex people are not taking it as egotistical when it clearly is. If Bill said the exact same thing, it would be a huge story. Just wondering what the SP thinks of it.

Rex is just to put the pressure squarely on his own shoulders in hopes that his team won't play tight.

...also it is easy to see who the Jets fans are, even with out all the "FAV TEAM" logos, lol. Jets fans like Rex Ryan for the most part, I think most know that. Will they like him if they lose 45-3 this weekend?

I'm no JETS fan but I find Rex very entertaining at times and then there are times I wish he would just shut the hell up but the one thing I love and respect about him is that he tells you how he really feels.

People can also see who throws out broad uninformed characterizations. Plenty of Jets are very critical about many of Ryan's traits or tendencies, i.e. needless challenges, poor in game decisions, etc. Some Jet fans like the brashness some don't. Here I just disagree with your premise that he's making it about himself in order to self-promote. He doesn't need to do that. Local and national media already do that for him. He's actually a lot smarter than he looks or comes across sometimes - he knows what he's doing here.As far as you last statment - sure I'll still likel what he's done if the Jets get blown out this weekend. However if that happens he will need to tone it down a little (which I douby he'll do) or his boldness will ring a little hollow.

Rex is the kinda guy that is always putting his foot in his mouth. No, really...he is.

Seriously though, its just him redirecting attention away from his qb as stated above. Seems like a good technique.

What Rex says doesn’t bother me. I find him entertaining.

However, if I were a Jet player, a world class athlete who makes millions, I think I’d rather not hear/read so much about how the coach needs to take the pressure and attention off of me. My ego would have a tough time accepting the idea that I need that kind of protection. I would think that if I had worked hard and earned my spot, I would want the pressure, the responsibility and the recognition that I can execute the game plan to its fullest potential.

Except for - as is evidenced by even NON Jets fans here - it isn't clear. The Shark Pool is telling you what it thinks of it. Not our fault you don't agree with the answer.

It would seem worse if the Hoodie said it because it's out of character for him. Or Payton. Or Caldwell.... well or if Caldwell showed any personality. Ryan has been brash from day one and at times it;s annoying and at times it's gamesmanship and at times it's very clever.

If you think this is merely about Rex Ryan's ego, so much so you're dismissing any contrary opinion as the opinion of clearly biased Jets fans.... well that's unfortunate.

Not saying ego doesn't play into it - as it does with EVERY coach. But this is something else.

Even Belichick responded, invoking humor when asked about the one-on-one battle---"I might have a little quickness on him, he's probably got a little strength and power on me, Belichick said. But I don't think either one of us is making any blocks. At least, you won't see me doing that. That's probably a good thing for our team."
Is this a little jab at the Jets' sideline blocking play earlier in the season? Go Bill.

Rex is the kind of guy that the majority of fans are going to Love as their own coach just like most players want to play for him. He just topped some players poll of coach you would like to play for in Sports Illustrated.... Fans of other teams probably not so much. He speaks his mind, loves the game and MOST IMPORTANT, He Knows Defense...To me THAT is the Key.... And the complete opposite is Herm Edwards.. Herm, also had some interesting Press conferences and quotes - the difference is when it came to X's and O's Herm was a nincompoop... Herm rambled on IMO, because he had no answers...To me, if a coach knows what he's talking about coaching wise then the rest of the fluff is totally fine. There's not a coach I'd trade him for right now. Sure maybe Bellichik but, that isn't happening.None of the talk bothers me, then again, I don't watch ESPN and I tend to not follow every single war of words BS story the media blows up in NY..... If Rex did this in Cleveland or New Orleans would he get half the attention?

 I didn't even read it that way. That's hilarious if it was. Even BB gets in a good one now and then.

I'm a Pats homer and, for the 2 sports radio stations I listen to, what was stated above is the universal belief.

This puts Ryan in a great situation. If his team loses it's on him and the players are somewhat shielded. If the Jets win he gets all the accolades which is what he apparently craves. Ryan is living vicariously through his players. Put on a helmet Rex and then you can talk the talk.

As a White Sox fan I liken Rox to Ozzie Guillen. So long as the Jets are winning, he'll be fine with such public bravado. But if they get a cold spell, those quotes are going to be met with much more scrutiny.

To answer the original question, no I don't have a problem with Rex. I feel the same as most here that he's diverting the pressure away from the players. Mike Golic, a former player, thinks its perfectly fine and his own players would have no problem with it.

This is true. If he 1) misses the playoffs or 2) gets himself into a crappy season record, he'll start getting a lot more flack for it. By then, however, the spotlight will be on him anyway for losing and he won't need to pull it there.I often wonder how long he can keep this shtick up. At some point you think he's gotten to the point where he'll stop and he doesn't. Sometimes it'd be nice to see him clam up and prep - in this case, I think deflecting attention from Sanchez's issues is a solid play though.

:o

I don't have a problem with this as long as if the Jets are down by 3-4 scores by halftime, Rex charges out of the tunnel for the 2nd half, runs straight over to the Pats sideline, pulls Belichick's hoodie over his head and starts giving him the business.

I'd be prone to put together a fund to pay for that fine. That'd be one of the funniest things ever.

Rex's shtick has really gotten old to me

He seems like a clown, or a cartoon character.

If it works for his team, great, but it has gotten on my nerves

Mike Golic was talking about this on ESPN radio this morning and he echoed the general sentiment here, that he was deflecting the pressure from his team, specifically Sanchez. He also noted that this was a tactic employed by his father whom he played for. Rex has been around the NFL a long time, he literally grew up around it. He's a clown for sure, that's his style like it or hate it. That doesn't mean that there isn't a level of method to his bombastic madness though. As others have pointed out, it's pretty much working too. We are sitting here discussing Rex and not Sanchez.

As for the Jets' fans liking Rex, here's food for thought. In 2 short seasons he is now the all time franchise leader in post-season wins and is the first coach in team history to win playoff games in back to back years. Are there some of us who would probably prefer a "classier" coach, one who doesn't talk as much trash and still wins? Of course there are, but when you are as success starved a fan base as the Jet fans have been over the past 40 years you are likely going to embrace the winning no matter what personality it is packaged in. I get a kick out of Rex most of the time, but i'll admit that there are times when I wish he would just keep quiet for a change. I am also not exactly thrilled with all of the negative distractions this team seems to endure. Yet, here we are in January with football to look forward to for the second year in a row. I'll take it.

When things get bad, and lets be honest most teams go through rough times, I'll be curious to see how he handles it.

Patriot fans love this fat ###-clown. Taking shots at Tom Brady is like poking a Pit Bull with a stick through a fence all week... then when you show up on Sunday to tease him, somebody opens up the gate.

I think - and believe it or not Big_Russel made me think of it but - the fact that it's one sided or one way tells you what Rex is doing. It's not like some of the Miami back and forth where they engaged with him. He knows Hoodie and Uggboy won't engage in a back and forth. It's not for them. He's doing it to draw attention elsewhere.

Again I second the opinion that sometimes I'd like him to just clam up and get the team ready. But considering the mentality of this franchise before he showed up, I'll take the arrogance for now. If he's talking trash and the team is sub 500...... that's another story.

Hey it works for him, works for his players. That's what counts. When it stops working, either he adapts or he's done.

The foot thing has been established already

I see you point, but I think I would soon appreciate what he or any coach does to deflect attention from me.lets say your world class athlete Santonio Holmes.Would you rather answer 74 questions about the dropped 3rd down pass, and 3 about your coach?Or 3 questions about your dropped 3rd down pass, 42 about your coaches comments and 12 about his feet.

And again BOTTOM LINE... From a players Point of view.Rex was known as The Mad Scientist at Baltimore.... Like Bellichik, Rex comes to work each week with a game plan that excites the players. One that they can't wait to sit down and listen to... And again as opposed to a Herm Edwards "Rah Rah, Lets just line em up and hit em harder" or a Mangini "we just follow the process".... It's FUN to come to work and play for such a coach... These guys love Rex so much as a coach and a person that the media games are barely relevant. When a HC dazzles players with KNOWLEDGE, the rest of this stuff is fluff and just media games that they hardly even listen to... A Side show.

Actually I like what he's doing. I expect you're right, and it's also possible that he's just trying to get into the heads of other teams--but I'd bet most of it is for the fans. That's a big ticket marketplace, he's got a lot of competition for sports fans in the area, and the more he stirs the pot the more interest it engenders. Ultimately Advertising <=> $$. :stirspot:

I don't have a problem with Rex yapping nonsense at all, but come on guys. Is he really just taking attention away from his team? Who has to back up his words? And who's going to pay the price for his prodding of the pit-bull? Certainly not him. If anything, this puts more pressure on the players.

Agreed. A strange consequence of all the Ryan fodder is that I find BB more likable with his jabs at Ryan's unbacked nonsense.

Completely disagree. BB is actually really funny - he has a very sarcastic sense of humor. His after game press conferences give nothing but his weekly segments can be pretty humorous.

The pressure is always on the players though. What he's doing is taking it off during the week so they can focus.Execution is always on the players in the end, but you can be better prepared if you're answering less 'you struggled last weekend, why?' questions. Now, as I said before, I'd like to see him do it in a less blustery way. I think he's a bit overboard in some instances and indeed, of all teams to be careful around, the Pats will use material to great motivational effect. really though, we talk about how well coached the Pats are and how smart the Hoodie is - of course it's a battle between them. that's all he's saying. HE needs to outcoach BB. Really, is that so over the top? He needs to design schemes to contain Brady. The players have to execute but we've all seen how a bad decision can cost a team a game and get a coach lit up (Caldwell, Haley).Really, to me this is a far cry from 'we're the best team' and 'who beat us' and stuff like that. Still over the top, but he's done way worse.

I've never seen one of his weekly segments - I'll have to check it out. He strikes me as a guy who would have a very dry sense of humor.Ok, so I revise my statement that he APPEARS to be, perhaps is really not.

I liked his response to rex anyway. Thought that was funny.
