I think the coverage on these two teams is extremely overblown, but maybe I have southwest coast bias.

Do people really care? Are there that many fans that dictate the constant obsession with these two teams? Are there any two teams in another sport that get this kind of constant obsessive reporting on the minutia of what they do?

12 years into the divisional era, it appears the only thing the LDS round has given us is Red Sox and Yankees in the playoffs every season, and a fine excuse for the media to cover them nonstop while largely ignoring the rest of the league.

Where do you get your news? Is your local paper obssessed with them? Your local news channels? I have always lived in the Boston / NY area so I have no vantage point.

most of my news is national, so i get some of it there. but even in AZ there are local guys from new york who ramble on and on about the yankees. i actually like getting sports news from all over the country and not just a bunch of local yokels who think the regional team is the greatest ever.it just seems that espn always shows these games when they play. maybe it is like the lakers being shown on national tv all the time, and i don't notice it.i was more curious about if more people than i realize follow these teams which justifies the coverage.it's not a bad thing per se, it just struck me as something curious for some reason today.

ESPN is really the only one that seems overly obsessed with the two teams. USA Today and FSN (the only other places I really get sports info) do a pretty good job of covering actual stories instead of made up drama specifically designed to keep the Yankees and Red Sox at the top of the newsreel in Bristol.

If ESPN is constantly showing these games there is probably a reason for it and that reason is....

:moneybag:

i completely agree.but is that because of NY being the top market and they don't care about anyone else, or do that many other households nationwide turn into it as well?

Always disliked the Yankees, but kinda liked the Red Sox, or at the very least, didn't mind them at all. Even got a Boston hat as kid once (Angel game).

Anyway, now I can't stand either. Boston fans have had a big part in that, I guess...not to say Yankee fans are any better...they aren't. I've felt this way for a few years now, but to illustrate my new found disdain, check this out:

I was at a Mariners/Sox game in Seattle recently, and I sat in front of the most obnoxious, know-it-all fan I have ever heard at a baseball game. Literally, EVER. It was all Boston, ALL the time...even when they were up like 7 - 2. Guy still never let up. Their "Captain" gets a single, and the guy kept saying, in that crap accent, "That's what Captain's do, ya see!...there's a captain right there! See, he never let up. He's showing the rest of the troups that you don't let up...EVAH. You see that right there?" On, and ON, and ####### ON the guy went. :hophead:

We left our seats to get away from him. I didn't care much who won, never cheered or anything, but sure enough, as we were leaving he was babbling about leaving early or something. We come back a few innings later, and he himself had left early.

Just awful.

Oh, and the Ben Affleck stuff was a joke, too. And that movie they were making during the World Series and stuff. They finally win one and it was like they were entitled to it.

Yep, I sure do hate the Red Sox now.

These two teams are the most likely of any two teams in baseball to meet in a seven game league championship series. They're two contending teams, they both would like nothing more than to knock the other out of the playoffs, you get good pitching and great hitting from both sides, and now you're starting to get heads up defense, too. You rarely see a blowout, and even if one team gets a big lead, the other always seems to battle back and at least make it interesting. There are a lot of recognizable players on each team, largely because of their payrolls. And they could get into a brawl at any moment. Sounds pretty good to me.

We hate the fact that Ben Affleck has annointed himself the Official Fan of the Boston Red Sox. We get no choice in this. The movie sucked. It was made by Fallon, who sucks. And he's not even a Red Sox fan - he was making fun of Red Sox fans. The fact that it was made during the World Series was complete luck. The original plan for the movie was for the Red Sox to have another historic collapse. Then they won the World Series, and the whole movie changed. I agree about hating fans like the one you were talking about earlier, too.

 Amazingly, Red Sox fans have overtaken Yankee fans on the dbag list. You can't even go to a Sox-Rays game here anymore, you just want to punch these #######s. What's funny is that 7 years ago, the Sox weren't that big a draw down here. Win a series, and all of a sudden the bandwagon was out in force.

To be fair, 7 years ago the Rays weren't a big draw there either but yes, now everyone and their mother is a sox fan. LIterally I feel bad for my buddy at my local watering hole. He's a yankee fans and is constantly getting bashed by people who call themselves "big sox fans". These guys have never lived in boston... probably couldnt' tell you who Rich Gedman or Oil Can Boyd is let alone Calvin Schiraldi or Tony C.... but they're big sox fans. I know I'm a fanboy here and I play up to that.. but the fact of the matter is the bandwagon is overflowing and those of us who grew up the Sox aren't exactly excited about it either. Harder to get tickets... harder to find a sox fan to carry on a reasonable convo with... and most importantly, usually it's the bandwagon kids who annoy the piss out of non-sox fans. That said.. ESPN airs these games because they get ratings.... very good ratings... nationwide.

On the whole Red Sox fans are Yankees fans with inferiority complexes.

There's good and bad on both sides, but the above pretty much holds true.

Loud and obnoxious vs. loud, obnoxious, and whiny.

To be clear guys, I was just talking off the top of my head with those last tidbits. I understand that fans of a team have no say in exploits like that and such. And I don't understand "fans" of sports that decide to hate players or teams simply because of media or hype. Tiger Woods, for instance, if you know what I mean. Those are silly reasons to vilify, as it's not their fault. Dare I say Brett Favre? Anyway, you know what I mean. ;) But the rest of the reasons I can't stand Boston anymore, are valid ones.

That's fine, but next time I'm catching a game at fenway I'll pass along the invite. When you're ####faced in the cheap seats off an endless stream of Sam Adams pints and the place goes ape#### after a Papi HR I'll imagine you'll have a pretty big ####-eating grin on your face :D Oh.. and your CDs are in the mailFedEx Tracking #7303 1250 #### (last 4 via PM)Enjoy

For some reason, I keep cracking up at that part. :D Say, does anybody here know anything about Don Orsillo, the Red Sox announcer? Is he and is family a ####, or is he liked more than Stompin' Tom Connors?

TIA

:excited: Sweet dude, thanks! And of course I would go to Fenway, any day of the week. Can't wait to see that place, actually. But you do need a new fan-base, k?

Ditto. I hated the Yankees growing up. Now I think the Yankees beating the Red Sox is the best thing in sports. I like the players on the Red Sox but I just cant stand their fans as a whole.

Yanks/Sox is the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

Unfortunately, ESPNewEngland is involved.

If it's not "All T.O., All the time", we have to hear about Tedy Bruschi's BMs or if Big Papi is more clutch than the American were in WWII.

Yeah, it really sucks. If ESPN wants to the national sports channel they claim to be, then show me some Royals Devil Rays! dammit.

Well...the whole world is watching.
No it's not.
According to ESPN it is.And I also agree that it's not the greatest "rivalry" in all of sports. The other side needs to win more than once for it to be a rivalry.
DOUSH.

It's "this guy"... he can't help it. :no:Anyways... the hype will die down as the drama from the 04 aaron boone incident and the 05 yankee meltdown fades away. That said the hype has been good for the sport as a whole...

To be honest I don't give a #### about either of these teams but I am definetly looking forward to the upcoming series. It's always fun to see either of these teams lose and in a very meaningful series between them one of them will leave the series whining big time, and that's why I will watch.

Of the two, I'll probably be rooting against the boston terrier red #### fans, when it comes to being a whiny tool nobody does it better.

BTW I null voted (the correct way)

What's better? It's hands-down the best rivalry in baseball. Cowboys/Redskins? Lakers/Celtics?I can't even think of other rivalries even close to that level, really.
Giants/Dodgers is comparable when the teams are decent... They haven't been in a few years, so its been on the backburner.
