Do You Keep an Emergency Bag? (1 Viewer)

I like to be prepared and self sufficient. I do a fair amount of camping and hunting, so a lot of these items are used for that, but nonetheless here is what I keep under the back seat of my pickup or in the toolbox.-Jumper Cables-Small 1st Aid Kit-Flashlights / Headlamp / Lantern-Chain & Tow Strap-Toilet Paper-Bungees, Tie Downs, Rope-Tarp-2 Gallons of Gas-Change of Clothes-Cold Weather Gear (Boots, Gloves, Caps, Balaclava, Hand Warmers)-Machete-Small Axe-Hand Saw-Hunting Knife-Binoculars-Matches & Fire Starter-Mylar Blankets-Water Bottle-GPS-$100 Cash-Tool Box:Breaker BarBottle JackRatchet & SocketsHammerScrewdriversVise GripUtility KnifeCrescent WrenchChannel LockHex SetValve Stem ToolTire Plug KitFunnelWD-40Zip TiesHose ClampsWire CutterWire NutsWireElectrical TapeSpare FusesRagsDuct TapeMeasuring Tape

If I need food, I'll kill it.

Hydrofluoric acid.
I am sure you are mocking or making a joke... but I don't get this at all.
You seem like a very serious person.
Sure, deadly serious.
We're talking emergencies, right? The last thing I want to do at that time is contacting chemical companies and trying to get it overnighted.
Still don't get it.
I would have sworn from the last post you did.

BOLD = LOL
Laugh if you want but the diarrhea pills are a great idea. In the case of a total shut down, water becomes one of the most sought after commodities. We take for granted that when we turn the spicket on, clean, potable water comes out. What do you do when there is no electricity, you don't know how to make a fire or simply can't and your family needs water? Drink the nasty stuff and within a day you are ####ting like a goose and within a week are so dehydrated you are a vulture MRE by the weekend.Happy Friday!

PS - nice TDOSS, don't shoot me when I wander over to your place during the apocalypse, I have two flints and know how to use them
A nice carbon filter pump is a good alternative to diarrhea pills.Even better: Steripen

Bleach works too for a cheaper alternative. If you're not a backpacker there's not much reason to own a steripen IMO.

Ok, on my way to getting things put together. I got a small first aid kit for my truck. I am going to buy one of the kits linked earlier (I think by fish) for my wife's car. (though I do have some questions about that kit) and I started getting the house kit ready to go. I got a $20 bag from Marshall's (a nice 24" sport duffle Eddie Bauer one of good quality) and went to Target and got some supplies. Still need to get a few more things for it though.
This is very important. 'Eddie Jack Bauer' gear is a MUST when preparing for the apocalypse...
Fixed.

Still don't get it. Why would you need to use that if there is chaos all around and people are dying left and right?

Lots of options for MREs out there. Can anyone recommend any that actually taste good that we might use for camping too?

Beef Enchilada is good. Take the hot sauce and cheese that also is in the MRE and mix it to the enchilada and it was really good.Cheese Tortillini - It's a veggie MRE that I really likedChicken and Rice - Again add the hot sauce and it was awesome.Chicken Breasts are always good.

I've got guns and ammunition. That's all I need. If I need anything else, I will shoot you and steal your supplies.

I was just at the gas station and all the senior citizen and unemployed generator folk were there. Four of them in total. They were all talking to each other. I was tempted to ask if all of their bunkers are up to date. They were all so excited that they might get to use their generators.

We have a stash for floods/earthquakes. We rotate our bottled water and pasteurized milk, but the rest is fairly static. Living in California and not being prepared for a natural disaster seems rather moronic. It doesn't take much effort to make an emergency kit for three or four days in case of a major earthquake.

Anyone in California that does not have something is either an idiot or lazy (both?). Having no prior notice and the ability for a large earthquake to have such a wide geographic impact and overwhelm services (from utility to first responders) makes having an emergency stash automatic. Being in Northridge during the Northridge quake gave me a small taste of that- and that was a quake no where near being what is possible. In the Sacramento area, there is the added danger of the levees breaking from a quake. That would make for good times.

Bump to remind many of the doomsday preppers in this thread that they may want to make sure they eat the MRE's they bought a few years ago before they go bad.

Doomsday Prepping is one thing... having an emergency bag is a whole different thing. Of course, there are all those whacko's out there like me and others in this thread that would listen to these crazy people:http://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit
Well if the government says it TGunz should be all over it.

You would also expect him to want the government to pay for sending kits emergency kits out too. I guess it just feels too much like some whacko conservative thing for him to get into it.

I've had the idea of doomsday running through my mind all morning. The inch of snow we got in NC yesterday has schools closed again and most businesses shut down. I figured this would be a 2-3 day shutdown yesterday, so I stopped at the grocery store on the way home and was blown away by the amount of people going into full on "bunker mode". Canned foods, water, and batteries were flying off the shelves. The store even brought out an extra pallet of water. The local radio was giving tips for what to do if you lose power for extended periods. All this struck me as strange, but I'm from Chicago and used to the snow. I understand the locals don't deal with this very often.

Of course last night, I was flipping around the dish and ended up watching half of a doomsday prepper show. I feel like there are 3-4 different programs on the same subject floating around different networks. Ranging from people going way overboard to paranoid folks with no survival skills. There is some good info on those shows, but they don't hold my interest. The kids on last night were totally clueless.

Come this morning I found myself running through scenarios in my head of what type of shape I'd be in if crap really did hit the fan. I'm behind the eight ball in the fact that I have three young children under the age of 7, so my food would run out within the first 2 weeks. On the plus side, I do have a good amount of first aid, spare water, tools, and guns/ammo. I live in a wooded area near a pond with fish, and only a few neighbors. It probably wouldn't hurt to stock up on a couple more flashlights and/or candles.

Bottom line, I've come to the conclusion that in the event of total anarchy or the apocalypse, I will band together with my neighbors and form a gang of raiders. We will go on the offensive early and plunder. I urge everyone to continue to stock up on supplies.

The only issue with this mentality in the south is pretty much every household is armed with a wide array of pistols, shotguns, assault/hunting rifles, etc. The idea of "we'll just take everything by force" works up north where silly laws have disarmed everyone or general complacency has lead to a lot of poorly protected households. ;)

I've had a good amount of training on CQB, but I probably should battle my way up to Canada. easy pickings. Good advise... you know what, you're in the gang!
