Do you personally agree with taking down confederate monuments? (1 Viewer)

Imhotep?  I am not sure I would have him on this list.  I thought he was about medicine and architecture, not genocide.  Though building on a grand scale back then did use up labor.  Was he ever a general?  I did not think so.  As for Caesar I guess I would want to know to which one you refer..
sorry I didn't type it out more clearly.  They all ruled with iron fists.  They all had slaves.  They all wanted to and/or did wipe out enemies, and some based on color/race/religion.   Hope that clears it up.

I see we are very divided on this topic.
I think almost all of us believe state and local governments should be free to build monuments and statues for whatever they like and also should be free to change or remove them as they collectively see fit.  And observers are free to draw whatever reasonable conclusions they like about those places based on those decisions. Does anyone disagree with that?

Little.

Just read this, very powerful speech and very moving words.

@SaintsInDome2006 what is your opinion of this guy?
I've purposefully stayed out of this thread, but I imagine Henry is in here and whatever he says I'm sure I stand with him as far as my city is concerned.

As far as Mitch is concerned, that's long and complicated. His father was mayor as well. Landrieu and Friends, including many a conservative (and what does that really mean here), tore down an historically black 24 square block neighborhood for a shiny medical complex which is half empty while the city had no central public hospital for 10 years. I wish people had this kind of energy when that was happening. I've voted for Mitch, I know the milieu he comes from, he's brought a well-spoken and professional demeanor to our city, whereas before that we had Nagin, Morial, and Barthelemy (idiot crook, super smart crook, apathetic crook) before that. I don't think I will get further into this, thanks for asking though.

Yep.  The Landreiu family is a political power family in Louisiana.  There's no moral high ground in that family, but it was a nice speech.

I guess I am not as familiar with Imhotep as I might be.  I thought Imhotep was a regent, a physician, poet, and architect.  Egyptian history was never my thing.

Lee (one of the statues in question) choose to lead the Confederate Army only after being offered the head of the Union Army by Lincoln.  As to why he made this decision, he said that he would never draw his sword against his native state, Virginia.  Virginia, not the US, is what he believed to be his country first and foremost (as was the belief of many at the time).  That's why before the war the term "these United States are" though now we use the term "the United States is".
Yes, the mentality of people at this time in history was State first, then country.  The bolded shows the change of the country from before the war to after.  A collection of states that formed a country to a country divided into states.

IIRC, at the end of the war....one of the things that Lee was against was the army fading into the woodwork and engaging in continual guerrila tactics.  It's possible that if Lee wasn't there to discourage this...the war could have gone of for longer than it did.
Very true.

yeah, that's the problem with an unwillingness to confirm stuff when I'm posting from the can.....

HA!   Yeah, Ramses, anything pre Moses

Obviously the one who sacked other civilizations to steal their croutons and forced them into slave labor in his lettuce fields.

Not much moral high ground in any politician in Louisiana - the fact that New Orleans is below sea level may be a sign.

By the way - I hope they name the circle after Lee Dorsey and put up a statue of him "Ridin the Pony" - then no need to change the name and business addresses.

Poll in the Richmond paper today about this. For a good time, read the comments and see where people stand here. Pretty much what you would expect. It's why I think compromise is the only thing that will work here in the near future. I guaran-damn-tee you most of the people in those comments don't even live in Richmond proper. There's no way 37,000 locals voted in this poll. Despite what most people probably imagine, I think of Richmond as a diverse and pretty friendly city to live in. It is a focal point for this debate for people from everywhere though, especially Virginians.

Take down the confederate statues and replace them with statues of Saints players.  Win/Win

Nobody in NO is going to complain that a statue of Archie Manning or Drew Brees is going up.

You say that now, but remember, Archie played for the Rebels.

Reggie Bush doing a Heisman pose would be outstanding.
