I was having a discussion with a friend about recording a live sporting event on TV.  He regularly records games on TV to watch later.  I never do so as I have no interest to watch a game that I know has already been played even if I don't know the score.  I'll watch highlights but I can't sit down and watch it from start to finish unless I'm watching it live.  I know that's pretty quirky but curious how much you guys will watch after the fact.

Yes I can't do it. Maybe 20 years ago where I didn't have highlights and scores delivered to my phone instantly but even then that seems like a lot of work just to be "surprised".

My wife is always offering to record a game for me.  I know it’s absurd and irrational, but it’s just not the same...  even if I’ve paused and I’m a couple minutes behind real-time.  There’s just something about being connected in the moment that’s integral to the experience for me.  Respect someone who can disassociate from that though.
Even if I start something late, and it's paused, I try to hurry through to get back to "live" as soon as possible.  That's exactly the same thing for me, even if it's something I REALLY want to watch.

Yes, but normally only if I'm going to start watching it less than a few hours late.  I'd never wait until the next day.

Sometimes it's kind of nice because if I'm disgusted with the results I can just skip ahead before deciding to bail out.

I do it a lot. Its actually better sometimes since you can fast forward. Ill record a west coast baseball game and watch it in the morning. If I find out the final score though, I usually just fast forward to the end.

Rarely, almost never. I feel the same way the OP does, even about paused television. Sports need to be live.

I have to because of the time difference.  Will usually get up early the next day, often while the game is still playing, and try and catch up jumping the commercials.  Sometimes punt the morning and go dark all day to watch in the afternoon evening.

When we had Dish and the DVR, we would start games an hour to an hour and a half later and fast forward through the commercials and half time, usually catching up LIVE in the 4th quarter.  The key is to obviously not look up the score and hope that your text messaging friends don't send an update to something that happened in the game.

Worked great for Thursday and Monday Night football, as well as Warriors games.  Early morning major tennis tournaments too.

I'm always afraid someone will text me "did you see that play?!" and I would have to say "in a few minutes I will".

Basically, ever since I got a DVR I have done this. Saves a boatload of time, you know how many commercials there are in an average NFL game?

Edit: If I am watching at home, watching live with friends in a bar or out somewhere is a great experience but as I got older this happens far less frequently than it used to.

SB LII was the last time I did this.  I did it mostly bc I was too nervous seeing my Eagles in the SB again.  The only other games I record are Wyoming football games as most of them start late in Mountain time and I don’t stay up that late.  That’s usually no more than 3 a year that are televised.  So rarely for me.

All the time. Helps that my sport is not one of the bigger ones in this country, still pretty easy to avoid scores. Though that's changing.

I have done it for football games and tried to stay away from the results.  That is impossible to do while playing FF so I stopped trying to avoid the outcome and just realized that was part of having to miss the game live.

For hockey it is easy to record a game and watch it later without knowing what happens.  If it is a big game then I have to avoid texts or let the people the typically text know ahead of time I am recording the game and not to text me until I am caught up.

Recording hockey is outstanding.  Fast forward through intermissions is great.  It cuts the game time in half and I don't really miss any of the feeling of watching live.  Football loses the "live" feeling but I will still mostly watch.  Sometimes I watch at 1x speed until something interesting happens.  I do this only for my team because I want to see how they are actually playing not just whether they win or lose.  I can't really do that for any other team.

I have recorded some playoff basketball games and usually don't find that too much of an issue other than a Spurs/Suns game many years ago then went into multiple overtimes.  I had set the recording to add 1.5 hrs and that still wasn't enough and I missed the last minute of the final overtime.  That was frustrating.  Now I set it for max time afterwards and sometimes even record a few shows after it just to make sure.....

All in all, it works great for hockey (because it's easy to avoid the outcome) and ok for football.  Given the choice I would rather watch live but it doesn't take away the excitement for me (when I avoid the outcome).

I pretty much do this with most sporting events other than something like the NCAA tourney where you have multiple games going at the same time.  Even if I am home at the time I will generally putter around getting food or drinks ready and be a half hour behind.  Fast forwarding through all the commercials and time outs I usually am caught up about halftime and watch the second half live.

I record USMNT Or Union games all the time if I’m not going to be home when they air.

Only for boxing and usually when there are two cards on at once.  I have to silence my phone and avoid ESPNs in the interim.

One time, I watched a Showtime card and recorded an HBO one, and was glad because when I watched the HBO one, they gave away the results of the Showtime card.  Reminded me of the Monday Night Wars, but I will ALWAYS choose Showtime over HBO in a head-to-head now.

All the time. Been recording all the world cup games since i work.

i also record football games so i can ff commercials.

I’ve done it for the OSU-Michigan game if was traveling that morning and would miss the start.

I also recorded Game 7 of the Cubs World Series win for my wife even though we were both home. She still loves rewatching the final inning and seeing the little smile on Kris Bryant’s face as he threw to first for the final out.

Only for wrestling PPVs. Never rewatch a weekly show I've missed unless it's not live to begin with, like NXT or Lucha Underground.

This I can see. I still have the Eagles vs Pat's super bowl on the DVR and will go back to it.

with work and two youngish kids (11 & 7) the only way I can watch live is if ignore one or all of that... which I'm not doing. the family goes to sleep relatively early, so I stay up and watch my sports on dvr. that said- I only watch soccer, so I'm looking at 90 minutes... sometimes faster if I've got two games to watch and am less interested in one or the game doesn't seem to be that interesting... I'll fast forward through until I see what looks like replays in the telecast.

Yes - but at most I'll watch it later that day.  I watched nearly every game of the Stanley Cup playoffs at least 1-2 hours delayed due to kids and stuff.  If I know the score, I lose all interest, so I'll literally turn my phone off.  My GDB FIL will not stop texting me no matter what I tell him during Caps/Pens games - it's the only way I can keep the outcome a secret.

For the World Cup games, do you know the result before you start watching?  I would have liked to do this but I always knew the result, either through internet, radio, or office chatter

I often do it.

To be honest I don't think I could actually watch an NFL game with commercials any more, it is way too painful.  Even if I am ready to watch an NFL game live, I time shift at least 90 minutes just to avoid most of the commercials.

Most games i do know the result. I have it on on the background or watch it when i work out. I may only watch one half where most of the action occurred.

Being that I coach a ton of travel baseball......thank god for my DVR. And the best part is.....I don't have notifications on my phone....and I never know what happened....and I can watch a game in half the time with no commercials.

Pure gold.

It is watching paint dry. Brutal. NFL Red Zone saved broadcast NFL football for me. Without Red Zone? I would never watch the NFL anymore during the regular season.

Baseball. Start watching usually about an hour late and skip thru all the commercials, pitching changes, mound visits, etc. I’m usually about caught up to live at the end of the game.

Two advantages to an hour or two timeshift:

1. Commercial free
2. Telling the wife "It's OK, I'll do that chore for you and record the game" scores major points for later redemption.

I'm with most, I typically end up stating the game late, and fast forward through commercials/breaks to get caught up. I won't watch it the next day, though.  It's especially nice for night games that start around 8pm.  By the time I get the kids in bed and get to sit down to actually watch, it's usually 30-40 minutes behind. I'll be caught up soon enough.  Just mute my phone til then, so the annoying NHL app doesn't keep buzzing with scores.

I went with sometimes only because I don't want to get up for English League Soccer games at 4am.  If I can turn it on and watch it when I wake up and avoid my phone for spoilers I will watch.  But regular sports, mid day or evenings, no.  I cant avoid spoliers while missing the game so I don't try and cant watch later.

for teams that I follow

ill record early games ( anything before 800 am) and some games if  im out while they are playing

in both instances I have to stay off social media and away from radios and tvs
I cant watch I game ive recorded and know the score
