Do you view players on your favorite team any differently than others? (1 Viewer)

Does anyone else worry that their proximity to a given team clouds their judgment when it comes to the value of certain players? To point, I have an abnormally high opinion on several Jaguars this year (Matt Jones, Marcades Lewis, Byron Leftwich, Ernest Wilford, Fred Taylor), most of whom I’ve at some point targeted for a trade in my dynasty, or actually own, despite the consensus that the Jacksonville offense is muddled and relatively mediocre. I would contend that it’s young and steeped in potential, but I haven’t been able to decide whether or not that’s based on my optimism and bias as a fan, or if it’s a rational and objective stance on the situation.

The thing that got this through to me was a quote by Billy Beane where he was asked how many A’s games he watches to evaluate his players and he said, to effect, “Enough”. When the obvious follow up question was posed, he responded with [paraphrasing], “Enough to stay objective and not overvalue my own assets and still know what we have”.

I was wondering how others dealt with this. How far do you try and distance yourself from your team to maintain a pragmatic view on players? Is it something you make a point of doing before making moves? I've actually never taken it into consideration before, always assuming that I had kept an objective view of my own team that was possibly more informed than others, which accounted for some of the discrepancies in rankings.

Sorry if this post has been done but it was just something that was in my head.

This happens to almost all owners. Usually ranking of players should keep you from straying too far. One benefit is plucking the players who are about to get a huge increase in playing time before non-fans see it as well.

If you are too far gone there is a solution...you can always move to LA! non- :football:

Well, Ben Watson is my TE1, Branch WAS my WR3 (and will be again), NE's defense was my DEF2 and their rookie kicker is my PK1, so naw....I value these players objectively....

:D
