Does Durant still have any value? (1 Viewer)

Justin Durant is ticketed for a return to outside linebacker, according to the Florida Times-Union.Daryl Smith is considered the only surefire starter, with the Jags leaving middle linebacker vacant. Durant is expected to battle Clint Ingram for the other starting job -- a competition Durant should win handily. The Jags will be in the market for middle linebacker next week.

Even if hes not in the MLB... he'll still be on the field in most packages. But I don't get it, hes far better than Smith.

Couldnt this all just be a smokescreen though? Make teams think they are looking at a top LB just to sway them. I guess next week will tell the truth.

We might be in a very short window to sell Durant before his value plummets if JAC takes McClain.

Jags fan here - I sincerely doubt McClain is going to them at #10. What team takes a MLB that runs 4.7 at #10? This post could look very dumb in less than a week, but I think Durant is if anything, a great buy low right now. Jax doesn't have a 2nd round pick, so assuming they don't take McClain (again, I sincerely doubt they will), the only real competition he'll have for MLB is Russell Allen (UDFA from last season). If anything, I think Allen is a nice sleeper pickup in deeeeeeeeeeep IDP leagues.

But wasn't Durant a late pick? Perhaps the Jags see a guy in the later rounds they "already" like better than Durant???

Correct, 2nd round pick in 2007 (#48 overall). One pick after David Harris - I'm not sure what to think of that exactly.

Durant is safe at MLB for the Jags, at least for one more year. The team has too many needs elsewhere to use its 1st to replace a high-potential player. Defensive back, wide receiver, or even QB would be more logical choices.

Hasn't Smith Failed in the MLB position 2 times already?

But I agree, sell him during this season after a couple of big games. That is if you play in leagues that actually buy IDPs.

I had read something that Durant was not even playing all 3 downs by the end of the year last year, I just did a little checking to verify.

Some data:

Check the snaps played in 5 of the last 6 games, no middle LB is going to be sitting 10 - 20 snaps a game, I think this shows a lack of trust/confidence in Durant. I think he is a solid LB but nothing special, if he does hang on to the MLB spot, it may be his last year there. If I had him I would move him while he may still be listed at MLB. just mho

Here are some other MLB snap counts - note that most of them only miss a few snaps a game if that:

Even Ray Lewis who was 34 missed only a handful of snaps:

And a rookie like Laurinaitis, played every snap:

I wouldn't say failed, but it really doesn't matter. Smith excelled at WLB and that's where he will be next year. Whether Durant is the MLB or not has nothing to do with Smith.

A note on the Ray Lewis snap count. He did not miss a single snap all season that was meaningful. Any snaps he missed were due to blowout wins (Lions, Bears for example) and the few snaps he missed in the Patriots playoff game were the last few when the game was over.
