Does your company shut down for xmas week? (1 Viewer)

comfortably numb

Footballguy
I'm in manufacturing and am one of the guys that always shows up this coming week.

I like it.  It's slow, most people are off. I can catch up on a lot of work etc.

2018 Xmas is on a Tuesday and my company will probably give us 24 and 25 off as they land on Mon/Tue.

Id like to suggest to my company that we shut down foe the last week of the year.

I'm curious how other companies handle this?

Do you not get paid for the time off?

You use vacation time to pay yourself for the loss Time?

Do you get paid for xmas and NYD?

It's gonna be an extremely nefficient week and we would save money by shutting down. I'd love to suggest this and only have inventory or maintenance done this week.

I do.  I may also take February off if the mood strikes.

0$ when I don't work.

My company's owner shuts down the shop between Christmas and New Year's day. No pay, but we get holiday pay for the holidays we miss.

So in this years' scenario.

An employee would get paid for just Xmas and NYD?if they have no vacation time to use they would have a small check essentially?

No shut down here but I always hold back enough vacation time to take days off around the holidays.   I don't mind returning to work since many people are off of work and things are slowed.   I can focus on my work without being interrupted.  It doesn't hurt that I work from home most days either.

I was on three different client calls on Saturday, two different internal calls on Christmas Eve and have a 8am call tomorrow even though I have the day off.

Yes. We are shut down for the week

They also shut down for two months during July and August. And they shut down for a week some time around Easter. And some years they shut down for Presidents wee in February. I get paid for it all.

We don't, but my two main vendors do and the only thing I really have to do is host a bunch of insurance agents in a suite at the Alamo Bowl. Best work week of the year.

:lmao:

No, but I'd estimate that the number of people in the office will be 10-20% of normal. Only one out of 15 on my group will be working.

Our China office will be in full swing though, and I'll monitor they work by reading emails.  The same thing happens in reverse during CNY, except they take like 10-14 days off instead of 7.  Btw, I think that that my Chinese coworkers put in fewer hours that my American coworkers if you look at the whole year.

Shut down from Friday the 22nd until Tuesday the 2nd.   Benefits of having a union negotiated calendar while working on the salaried side.

Open all week (besides today obviously) but it should be pretty quiet. I'm working a half day tomorrow from home  just to return the emails from Friday ( I took a PTO)

I do alot of work with Europe where they're more devout about Christmas. So I don't anticipate many emails these next few days.

You lucky SOB

We used to make people use vacation time around the holidays, then we got acquired and the company that acquired us had a policy of shutting down for the week between Christmas and New Years. It sounded like a good idea to me, so we do it now too - we basically gave everyone an extra week of vacation and shut the office during that time.

We're closed Mon/Tuesday and open the rest of the week. I don't go in between the holidays but I'll answer e-mail here and there this week. I started doing that years ago just so as not to have an avalanche of BS to deal with when I got back. The hourly employees and the salaried office workers not in upper management either use vacation / PTO or come in.

I typically still answer e-mail/emergency phone calls even when I am sick or on vacation unless it's not really feasible (on a boat or out of country) so the CEO/COO don't really care if I use vacation / PTO or not. I have enough comp time at this point that I never use it all anyway, so I kind of come and go as I please. As long as my departments don't end up in the weeds, they don't give a ####.

Company tradition to give paid week between Xmas and New Years. Been like that for decades. Love it!

depending on what day Xmas and New Years falls, I tack on a few vacation days to turn it into 2 full weeks off.

We get the 24th and 25th off for Xmas. Or a workday following should it be a weekend.  For more than that, we use vacation.  There are also two floating holidays you could use there.

Depends. If we’ve made our number for the month/quarter/year the sales team slows down. If not we’re grinding through New Years Eve. Other depts really slow down though. Company gave tomorrow off for “non critical” roles.

I have to work. Set comp plans, org structure and work on January Sales Conference. My break is after that. But still getting in holiday time, golf, etc

How does a company handle new hires?

Say I started Dec 16th. I don' have any vacation time.  Do I just not get paid that week?
It depends on the company.

My old company the whole company is off (it was an extra  "PTO/Holiday week" basically that you couldn't use the time elsewhere.

We only got the big holidays off so this balanced out the other holidays I get off for now

When I started at my previous employer, I worked at one of the distribution centers. They would shut down for up to 14 days in late Dec. (most of the product was pushed out to the stores and they inventoried what was left).  Employees had to use vacation time or have minimal paycheck.

Company I work for now closes between Christmas and new years. All full time employees get paid 40 hours. Part time employees get paid their average or if they work a set schedule, they get paid the same as if they worked.

One of the busiest weeks of the entire year in my industry as tons of places want remediation done while students/employees are all off.

Sitting at work right now. But I'm in the heating and cooling business, and it's 9 degrees right now. So we are busy.

Shut down for any week day from Dec 24 to Jan 2 every year. It is included in our holiday time off.

The week leading up to it has also become pretty much a ghost town unless you have projects.

We are open and only one person is out of the office today.  We are in construction and don't ever really shut down.  I have 6 active projects and have 5 reports due today plus we had our weekly 7 am staff meeting.   :kicksrock:

I'm actively looking for other employment (not really for this reason, although it will be nice to not have a 7 am meeting on 12/26 anymore).

We almost did.

Not really, but hardly any work gets done.

I'm working Thursday and Friday, fully expect to get a couple low urgency projects done and do some research in preparation for key tasks in January.

We get Christmas and NY off, have to take vacation time for any other days. Salary, so yes we get paid.

Had a guy tell me he got an Out of Office from a German colleague once that said something like

"I am out of the office until January 8th.  Your email will be automatically deleted.   If it was important please resend on January 9th"

Our business was open all through Christmas, the office however was closed on 12/25. We are in the dairy industry and the cows keep producing milk so we have to continue to operate. I feel bad for those who have to come in over Christmas but it's the nature of our business.

I don't remember exact details, but there was some sliding scale of what percent of your paid time off you got based on when your first day was.
