Has anything been said about Foxworth starting opposite Champ Bailey in light of the recent tragedy to Darrent Williams?

Denver PostThe underrated Domonique Foxworth will replace his close friend at right cornerback. Karl Paymah likely will become the team's nickel cornerback. Curome Cox also can play cornerback.

Foxworth is expected to start in 2007, although Karl Paymah filled in solidly at nickel when Williams was dinged at year's end. It's possible, though unlikely, that he could have a great offseason and move into the role. While Foxworth is a very solid player -- some felt he was every bit the player Williams was at times in 2005 -- he's not likely to provide the consistent numbers Williams did in 2006 in standard scoring systems. The firing of Larry Coyer and hiring of Jim Bates means much less Cover-2 calls for 2007 and beyond, which may boost the coverage stats of the corners but blunt the tackle numbers.

While not great comps, the relevant recent statlines are those of...

2003 Mike McKenzie (14 games, 52 solos, 4 INT, 18 PD)

2003 Al Harris (16 games, 46 solos, 3 INT, 14 PD)

2004 Al Harris (16 games, 56 solos, 1 INT, 20 PD)

...which were good for low 50 - high 60 range under the FBG standard scoring system.

Foxworth isn't a good bet to do much better than those lines and Bailey will be still more dependent on his big coverage statlines in Bates' defense. I had suggested -- wrongly -- that Bailey would be a sell high candidate before the 2006 season. I'll be doing the same this offseason. I don't see any way one Denver CB, much less both, gets to 75 solos in 2007. Let somebody else hope that these guys can put up yet another 8-10 INT season.

I dont expect Foxworth to start. And if he has to, I dont expect him to last long.

Im under the belief that the Broncos will find another option. Whether it's currently on the roster or not.

Foxworth will start.

I hate to say this now that DWill has passed on, but the Broncs were showing signs of demoting DWill and moving Foxworth up. DWill was the more immediate impact guy but Foxworth is very much a student of the game and had the same tool as DWill but with better instincts and smarts.

This is EXACTLY what I was reading. I believe it was an article in the team capsules on TSN or PFW, but can't be too sure.

lol, not bad, I know my Broncos well.....Foxworth won't blow you away with his play, but he's good enough to start in the NFL. Dwill's primary role would have become Nickelback and punt returner.

As of today he is the starter.Wont last the season. Might not last the preseason. Maybe not even the offseason.
is this based on anything?
About 30 regular and 8-9 pre-season games over two years.Paymah is bigger and faster and really coming into his own; he'll be on the field somewhere.Foxworth actually turned out to be a pretty fair safety in the nickle package. He seems to be more effective working from the center of the field. On the perimeter, he's good for tackles after the catch whereas the center of the field allows him to jump a few routes every once in a while and break up a pass or several.Cox is a poor tackler, actually running right by Alexander as he run blitzed in the SEA game. Foxworth replaced Cox after that game.As to DWILL (RIP), he seemed to be in a signal and catch mode as a PR, ineffective to say the least. Broncos need a PR/KR in the worst way. Gill would really fill the bill from the slot and returing for this outfit.A top Safety and a rocket legged punter will play well in DEN. The punting was lousy. Average starting position of #29 (out of 32 teams) was reversed in '05 but returned in '06; what a difference a little unapproved weight supplement makes!

I don't know, I've watched every Broncos game since the inception of Sunday Ticket and I don't see what you guys do. Paymah is solid, but Foxworth is clearly a better starter at this point. Could Paymah become the starter eventually, sure. But as of right now, Foxworth is the more complete player and the one that will start. I don't see Paymah making that big of a progression in one off season.

for what it's worth :

(Rotoworld) Dominique Foxworth is likely to take over as a starting cornerback next season.

Impact: Foxworth has been a solid contributer, mostly as a nickel back, in two seasons in Denver. Karl Paymah could be the team's nickel now as Denver has decent cornerback depth. They could use a young safety to develop.

CBSSPORTSLINE

DEFENSIVE BACKS

06 Starters -- RCB Darrent Williams, SS Domonique Foxworth, FS John Lynch, LCB Champ Bailey. Backups -- S Curome Cox, S Hamza Abdullah, CB Karl Paymah, S Steve Cargile, S Quentin Harris. Injured reserve -- S Nick Ferguson, S Sam Brandon.

The Broncos lost Williams, a popular and talented teammate, in a tragic shooting on Jan. 1. Emotionally, it will be tough for the Broncos to deal with that loss. Foxworth, who was playing safety at the end of the year because of injuries despite his 180-pound frame, will likely move into the starting lineup to replace his good friend Williams. Bailey had one of the best seasons a cornerback could possibly have, with 10 interceptions despite many teams rarely throwing his direction. He's the least of Denver's worries. Lynch and Ferguson are aging and the Broncos will have to find replacements soon. Losing Brandon and Ferguson to knee injuries hurt the entire defense. Brandon was counted on as an heir apparent to either Lynch or Ferguson, but he'll have to prove he can rebound from the injury.
