Donald Brown (IND) - worth keeping in dynasty (1 Viewer)

It's getting down to cut time in my dynasty league and I'm on the fence about whether to keep Donald Brown.

Pro: Bradshaw is dinged and Ballard isn't exceptional. Has flashed talent at times, but hasn't put it all together yet. Contract year, so might move on to a different location where he could have more success.

Con: Might not even make the team this year (I personally think he will since the coaching staff doesn't seem care for Carter, but it's a risk). Rarely healthy.

So the basic question is, does Donald Brown still have a future for dynasty leagues?

I think the question needs to be broke down into two parts. Do you keep Brown if he stays with the Colts? No Could Brown end up being better with another team? Yes.

With or without Brown the Colts are going to live or die with Bradshaw/Ballard and I see Williams getting into the mix as a COP/third down back.

I'm holding out hope that Brown gets cut and gets picked up by a team like SD, Oakland, Jax, Where he may get a chance to rejuvenate his career when the starting RB goes down week 3.

I have him and haven't cut him--yet. He is borderline. But it is not as clear cut as some think. Despite all the hoopla about Ballard, Brown is more talented and a better all around back. He had the job until he got hurt last year. But injuries have been a problem for him every year and I have often said that durability is as important as talent or opportunity; Brown has not shown good durability when he has had opportunity.

I do think he has more value on another team and could be a useful fantasy back if healthy and in the right offense.

My advice: look at waiver wire and see whom you would be able to get in place of him at your free agent draft slot. I did that and decided that for now I will hang onto him.

I wouldn't say he totally had the job. IIRC, he was the bigger half of the RBBC for much of the first half of the season, but never really did enough to push Ballard onto the sidelines. Then, when Brown got hurt, Ballard took over and did a pretty good job.

Brown does offer more speed than Ballard and Bradshaw, but that doesn't matter much if you are somewhat of a one-trick pony, and as mentioned, can't stay healthy.

If Brown weren't a 1st round pick, I'm not sure people would even be talking about him - including the Colts.

Dropped him a couple of weeks ago for Dion Lewis. Dropped Dion Lewis after the leg injury for a kicker. For comparison, Beanie Wells is still on my roster.

12 teams and 26 players deep.

If you're still holding this guy, you're looking too long term. He's burning a roster spot for now, which could be used to pick up someone with just as much chance, if not more, of becoming fantasy relevant in the next couple of years.

And what's the ultimate upside? RB2/3? There are plenty of those around and it's not like Brown realistically has a shot at being more than that.

You see this all the time - dynasty owners trying to be too clever by holding onto mediocre assets on the 0.0001 per cent chance that a guy hits in a few years. By then more prospects will have emerged and he hasn't helped your team in the meantime. I think a good rule of thumb is if you tried to trade X player in your league, would you get anything back? If not, then there's no real point in keeping him. I think that's the case with Brown.

People need to clarify when they make a statement like this (I'm guilty of it also) It depends entirely on what type of league you are playing in. In my league of 45 roster spots and 5 taxi squad spots, I am still holding Brown. I'm hedging it by also carrying Williams. I don't have faith in Bradshaw, so I see one of Brown or Williams getting some meaningful touches. Pretty slim pickings available to pick up in place of Brown.

I also have a salary cap hit in regards to Brown in my league, if I choose to drop him.

OP didn't mention roster size in his post, just that it was dynasty.

45 roster spots plus 5 taxi is a whole different animal. I assume most people aren't playing in leagues like that

This is more Assistant Coach related, but I acquired this team from another owner. It's a 40-player roster (with 2 QB and 5 IDP starters, no taxi) and we're only allowed 10 drops each year. I'd take a salary cap hit for dropping him, else I might not have given much thought to holding onto him.

Thanks, all!
