Donnie Avery caught 60 passes last season... (1 Viewer)

Who catches those 60 passes this season, assuming Andrew Luck's workload is the same? More passes to his Tight-Ends? Bump Hilton? 60 catches is a pretty substancial, lol.

Better yet, how many balls will Avery catch this year in KC?

He is a far better #2 then what they had last year, no?

Bump Hilton, Bump TE's, then there is DHB but I'm not big on him.

Maybe downgrade Reggie slightly.

Avery on KC is definitely something I'm curious to see, too.

Pagano: Hilton a game changer: Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Tuesday at the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix that he is counting on second-year receiver T.Y. Hilton to play a bigger role in 2013 with Donnie Avery now in Kansas City. Pagano considers Hilton to be a significant weapon for the Colts. "He’s a game changer," Pagano said. "He has the ability, as we saw last year, to make huge plays. Whether you throw him a deep ball down the seam in the slot, or you hit him on a short pass across the middle or a screen, he has the ability to take it the distance."

That was also before they signed DHB. I think Hilton goes (stays) to the slot and DHB is the #2 WR outside.

The TEs were rookies last year and TEs experience significant growth in second year. I expect the TEs to both catch a lot of those 60 balls.

Dwayne Allen looked a hell of a lot better than Fleener last year. I expect Allen to have a pretty solid season.

It's probably not the right approach to focus on the number of receptions, instead we need to look at his role, the number of snaps and the number of targets.

Avery was on the field an astounding amount in 2012...more than 1,100 snaps. That's difficult to replace, but also screams opportunity for those who step into the role.

He caught 62 passes, but in 118 targets. That's a very uninspiring 52.5% catch rate. He also had 14 dropped passes, an enormous amount (12% of targets!). And he graded out as a poor blocker to boot.

In other words, the Colts have a relatively low bar in terms of replacing Avery's value, and it most likely will result in BETTER stats for Andrew Luck, who should see his completion rate bounce higher and probably his PYAC and TD rate.

Considering together they caught 71, with Fleener only catching 4 in the 2nd half of the season; I think this is your answer. Over 100 easily together this year, maybe over 120.

Pep's offense uses the TEs and RBs in passing routes more than Arians' did, so I think you can bump both of them. The TEs especially, as Allen is a stud and if anyone knows how to get the best from Fleener it will be Pep! DHB will play outside with Hilton in the slot, so he'll account for some as well.

Though I actually think our offense will throw less this season so everyone will get a little downgrade (apart from Luck, whose % will go up and INTs down), as hopefully the improved o-line and improved D will mean we can a) run the ball better and b) not have to play from behind the whole time.

I'm not sure why people don't think DHB can take up the slack. In 2011 he had 64 catches on 111 targets with Palmer and Campbell at QB.

I think DHB is better than most are giving him credit for after surviving the abortion that is the Raiders.

As for who to bump... Ballard. Arians is gone. He is notorious for NOT throwing to RBs.

agreed with the top, not so much the bottom... Ballard may catch a few but he can't do much in space. If they're going to be passing to a RB it will be Brown or Kerwynn Williams.

This is kinda my thinking, too. I think Ballard will get most of the touches and those touches are going to include more passes this year.

For all the hate on this kid, and I admit he isn't flashy, there's opportunity there that is at rock bottom prices as things stand today.

I would get him for the right price but as a RB with a solid lock on a starting job he doesn't come cheap even with limited upside.

When you say that, what are looking for in return?

This was about the Colts but maybe it should have been about the Chiefs. He may end up their No. 1.

Donnie Avery with 11 catches is on pace for ~60 again this year.

Yeah, totally weird. I saw highlights from last week of Donnie Avery catching a perfectly thrown ball from Alex Smith but the stats weren't there. I mean, who else is going to catch passes in Kansas City?

Alex Smith checked down to Jamaal Charles a lot, was Bowe shutdown? Or simply ignored by Smith? It seemed like Avery did most of his damage on 3rd down.

Picked up Avery where ever he was available. I like his upside, as Alex Smith has shown he doesn't trust his own arm strength to make deep throws to Bowe, and has not gotten his TE's involved on 3rd downs. Avery is Smith's short range relief valve and I think he continues to be highly targeted, while Bowe owners wonder where it all went wrong.

Didn't Avery tie with Hilton for highest drop percentage last year? I never get too excited about WRs with bad hands.
