Dont look now but D.Hester is turning it on. (1 Viewer)

I just don't see anything special about Hester the WR. Almost everything he caught tonight was either at or behind the line of scrimmage. He wasn't any different than in the past.
The amount of targets he was getting was definately something to like, more targets = more yards = more chances to get TDs, which = more points. It's actually quite simple when you break it down.
I get that. But just because he's getting more targets, it doesn't mean he has evovled as a WR. He looks like he will be easily passed as the #1 in Chicago by someone who actually runs real routes past the line of scrimmage. His increased targets looks like it will be limited to this year.
:goodposting: Bears homer here. As a wideout on the field, Hester is not a football player. Meaning: Hester does not know how to break off routes, does not have good hands, does not block downfield or occupy the secondary the few times Forte takes a carry to the second level, defenses do not respect him so the coverage can cheat to play the run, he has a very small target zone for passes he can catch - so he cannot leap and catch a ball over a defender, he does not make up for this by being aggressive to the ball ala Steve Smith, he is incapable of identifying a tendency in the coverage, processing that information and giving information to the qb or offensive coordinator and he cannot improvise when the timing of a pass play is broken.

The best way to use him would be for the Bears to accept he is not an every down wr, put him back on kickoffs and punts.

Bring him in on three wide receiver sets to run a go deep route every time he is put into the game and at least open up the game.

Hester didn't look as good as he has last night. I disagree on teams cheating on the run. Maybe they aren't using safety help, but Hester certainly looked to be getting a bit of respect from the corners last night playing 8-10 yards off the line.To be fair to Hester, he's still evolving as a WR and he is improving -- he still does struggle with some routes, but he's clearly capable.

While I agree that he won't be a #1 when they bring in a bigger WR this offseason, he still is more than capable as a #2 and is becoming a legitimate option at WR. He has his faults converting to WR, but I find it difficult in saying that he can't be a starting WR in this league. He's proven it this season and continues to improve each season.

I noticed that as well but I think all they were doing is playing at the 1st down marker. They were perfectly willing to give him the catch behind the line and hit him just after he caught it. I don't think it was so much a thing of respect as much as it was a thing of conceding the 3-5 yard gain.it was the same with the slant routes he ran on the last drive. SF was conceding the 8-10 yard middle of the field catches.

That was a terrible football game. I knew the Bears o-line wasn't good, but that was pathetic.

IIRC, Hester's night was two 8 yard catches in the first half, two 2 yard catches in the third, and 3-28 on the last drive.

I've never felt he was going to transition into a true #1, but his production weeks 6-9 has made him a pretty decent value. I don't know, though, I think its pretty muddled going forward (2010 and beyond). Knox is legit and Earl Bennett is serviceable. He's been on my do not draft list for a couple years in the work-in-progress phase of his WR career, and right now I can't see any reason to target him in the future unless he falls to the late middle rounds

FYI - I only play redrafts these days, and my comments reflect that mentality.

threads like these = kiss of death.

I think hester's gonna be alright, who they going to replace him with even next year? FA? Bears dont play that game normally. And they dont have a first or second rounder, Jay Cutler these are your weapons for next year as well. Hope fully another off season under their belts will mean better results on the field.

All that being said Im happy with Hesters production thus far in FF for where I drafted him
