Paul Giamatti joins the cast of Downton Abbey

In a story being cheerfully greeted by college-educated white people across America and the UK, beloved thespian Paul Giamatti is joining the cast of servant-porn soap opera Downton Abbey for its upcoming fourth season. "This really changes the game for us," said one PBS executive. "The show has already been a solid hit amongst liberal arts graduates and people who routinely apologize for Obama when he does stuff Bush would have done, but with [the addition of Giamatti], we could have a full-blown four-quadrant hit on our hands. NPR listeners, hybrid car owners, Whole Foods shoppers, and the most important quadrant, people who regularly give to PBS."Since Giamatti's turns as salt-of-the-earth creative types in Sideways and American Splendor, he's been beloved by affluent whites who are neither salt-of-the-earth, nor as creative as their jobs in web design or raising awareness would imply. One longtime fan of the show probably said, "I was starting to feel down, what with Mad Men wrapping up for the year, but now I have this news to sustain me until January. Of course, in England they'll get to see it in September. Damn it, I wish I was English!"
I realize that the AV Club is under the umbrella of The Onion, but the fake quote is a little peculiar.

I don't know if you read the AV Club Newswire regularly, but I highly recommend it. It's often funnier than The Onion.

I like the AV Club a lot, and I think their general interests line up with mine pretty closely on movies/TV/music, but they usually insert the snark as commentary, not fake quotes.

Just weird is all.

I know what you mean. But their fake quotes are always clearly fake and intended as satire.

New season starts tonight. Interested to see if it will still be worth watching with Stevens gone.
I assume you're talking about it starting in the UK. Where do you get it from?

Intriguing first ep. No real hint of the overall direction or who will carry the load storyline wise though. Mostly a bunch of tie-offs, but they crammed a bunch in they could have dragged out for awhile which is nice.

Ran 1:08. I wonder what PBS will do with the longer format.

I'm probably crazy, but I think it might be one of the best episodes since season one.

Not bad at all. Shocking stuff with that nanny, I suppose a blind squirrel finds a nut here and there.

My wife and I are making a donation to PBS, in return for watching their show early.

I think so. Season 1 was super fast paced like this as well.

I'm not sure hey have 100% committed to a s5. Anyone know?

So seems like they are consolidating story lines to an extent by tying off some loose ends.

The writing style seems more frantic still and they crammed a ton into the 45 minutes this week.

It looks like the main plotline will be just the normal running of the house. Writers have said this will end badly for all of them in the end so expect some bumbling. It doesn't seem like they will get too deep there and go Estate 101, yet.

Rest of the plotlines seem to be quick hit stuff they touch on and drop week to week.

Appears will end in a 5th season which they are in early stages of now.

Solid work this season, as usual.

Again, I implore Downton fans to check out Call The Midwife. It's available on Netflix streaming or DVD. Excellent.

It almost has to, doesn't it? Very few of these big houses made it far past WWII. The fact that they're still going strong after WWI is a bit of a stretch, really.

Well they have the chief component of a longer living estate. USA greenbacks.

Eventually the UK taxed the large estates out of existence.

It's airing Sunday nights in the UK.
So unless I want to do some fancy or illegal stuff on the interweb it's not available in the US yet?
Fly over to England?

I guess that's kind of fancy.

Good to see some other gambling and soccer GB's in here.
I had a lot of time on my hands last spring so I knocked off a bunch of shows I wanted to catch up on. This isn't normally my cup of tea but the first season was good enough to get my interest.

Bates about to go #### that valet up.

Looks like Edith is preggo and Mary figured it out or knows. A little unclear on which. And her man has split to be a Nazi? I can't figure out what he's leaving for Germany for.

German law allows him to get a divorce from his insane wife.

Have they shown the wife and I'm forgetting? I keep waiting for her to pop up. Also:

You missed your chance.

As I generally do.

Are they televising these? I've downloaded the first five episodes of season 4.

EDIT: Ahh, question answered above.

Love this show.

They won't marry off Tom to Edith will they?
I assume the new end game is Tom and Mary.
No that won't work. With Edith pregnant they need to CYA somehow. In Downton fashion I expect them to drag out the known unknown of the babydaddy up until the wedding and then he surfaces and wants to make things right. Calling this right now.
Nah. Remember the papers she signed without reading them? That's going to come back to haunt her.

ah yeah, good point wonder what that was.

I'm putting this in spoiler tags because it's a big plot point for this season. PBS watchers have been warned.

Green might as well have shook Bates hand and said "Hello, I raped your wife. How are you?"

Next week is the last ep before the Christmas wrap up which usually isn't much more than some random tie offs for characters who won't be around S5.

Should be epic. This season is bananas. So Lord Grantham cruises over to the USA to get in the teapot dome thing and back and they don't even cover it. Would have been cool to see them do a mockup of prohibition US.

My theory of Edith marrying off to Tom is shot I guess based on the previews.
