Also, Kobe was truly spectacular yesterday. He's a legitimate contender for NBA MVP this year.
He is having a fantastic year. Unfortunately for him, Lebron and Durant are having truly super fantastic years, and unless they both break a leg or something, it should be one of them that win the MVP.He's a legitimate contender for NBA MVP this year.
He can't be a MVP now!MVPs know better than to change a mask in the middle of a winning streak!I like the black mask though. Also, Kobe was truly spectacular yesterday. He's a legitimate contender for NBA MVP this year.
Who knows what the #### they're thinking at this point? I don't.I look at the losses as a positive. Now management won't have any doubts that it needs to make some moves next week.
So basically, BRONG's been right all along.Well Laker fans, we have reached a pretty low spot here. Back to back losses against two of the worst teams in the NBA. Not fighting for rebounds, poor defense, awful shot selection (especially on the part of Kobe.) That win on Sunday seems like a million years ago. This team needs an overhaul. We'll know in a week if anything is going to happen this year. If not, lights out.

Kobe has been very inconsistent this year. Sure, he's won some games for the Lakers, but he's also lost some games with poor shooting and shot selection, and his big men have bailed him out of several games when he was subpar. I'd also put Howard and Paul ahead of Kobe, but Kobe could be top 5, although many of the young guys like Westbrook and Love are closing in.He is having a fantastic year. Unfortunately for him, Lebron and Durant are having truly super fantastic years, and unless they both break a leg or something, it should be one of them that win the MVP.He's a legitimate contender for NBA MVP this year.

What do you have in mind? The roster is certainly flawed and I have no idea how you'd beat OKC, but you've got Kobe and 2 All-Star caliber big men.Well Laker fans, we have reached a pretty low spot here.
Mike Brown is not the problem. He's not an offensive coach, he has basically zero to do with the offense, he's like Rex Ryan, head coach but runs the defense. John Kuester is our "offensive coordinator". Mike Brown has been fine, Kuester has been fine. When you have 3 of maybe the 15 best offensive players in the NBA, scoring shouldn't be this hard. They are getting very poor play out of the other two positions, and they haven't all three played well consistently. This is their 5th run together, and it looks like things are getting a bit stagnent.Chris Paul is running the Clippers right now, I would argue that a great PG like Paul overcomes a bad offensive system/coach, because they are basically running things on the floor. I compare it to Peyton Manning who was basically the offensive coordinator.Remember when Cavs fans laughed when the Lakers hired Brown as their head coach and Laker fans ridiculed them and said the problem with Cleveland's offense was LeBron and the rest of his crappy team?
Yeah, about that: http://m.espn.go.com/nba/story?storyId=7659740
And yeah, the Lakers are averaging their lowest ppg since the advent of the shot clock. But that Mike Brown is sure a genius and lucky to be out of Cleveland!
Just shows how dumb LeBron is too since he repeatedly defended Brown for several years. If he had stayed in Cleveland, that team could have won a championship under a better offensive coach. Because apparently an offense consisting of everyone standing around while one person dribbles around and heaves a shot up doesn't work in the NBA.
ETA: Chris Paul would make zero difference for this team with Brown as a coach. A great PG under Brown would be like putting a monkey in charge of the world's greatest super computer.
This is a pretty rosey outlook on the situation. I agree with the bolded, there is a misconception that Mike Brown is designing the offense. He was brought in based on the Lakers desire to reestablish a defense. He's done that. The offense is not a coaching problem either. The problem is two-fold. First, you have Kobe who is no longer capable of editing his shot selection (that's code for what the #### are you doing?) Second, you have an offense that must have a point guard capable of pressuring the paint and running a PnR. Instead they have Derek Fisher and Steve Blake.Mike Brown is not the problem. The defense was terrible last night, and the effort was minimal in the 2nd half. Combine that with a bad shooting night from Kobe, and our overall play on the road, and that equals the meltdown.
I get what you're saying, but you seem to be ignoring the fact that LeBron did not have two talents like Bynum and Gasol in the paint at Cleveland. Based on that fact alone, it doesn't seem like a very good analogy to me.Right, it must be a coincidence that the Lakers have virtually the same team as the last couple of years but are averaging their lowest ppg since the 50s.Also total coincidence that the Lakers' offense looks exactly the same now as Cleveland's did when Brown was the coach in Cleveland. But it's all Kobe's fault for playing the exact same "do something in isolation while everyone else stands there watching" offense that LeBron played in Cleveland. That's all Kobe's fault even though he wants to go back to the triangle offense. Yup, totally Kobe, not Mike Brown at all.
Yup...other than replacing their 3rd and 5th leading scorers with nothing and letting all their weakenesses on offense just get a year older and a year worse (MWP, Fisher, etc), they have exactly the same squad. Good call.Right, it must be a coincidence that the Lakers have virtually the same team as the last couple of years but are averaging their lowest ppg since the 50s.Also total coincidence that the Lakers' offense looks exactly the same now as Cleveland's did when Brown was the coach in Cleveland. But it's all Kobe's fault for playing the exact same "do something in isolation while everyone else stands there watching" offense that LeBron played in Cleveland. That's all Kobe's fault even though he wants to go back to the triangle offense. Exactly, the guy isn't exactly working with a bunch of speed demons and lights out shooters on offense. The makeup of their roster dictates huge minutes for the starters and ugly, slow down, post up, grind it out basketball. When they get into a long distance shootout, they can be beat by just about anybody in the league (as evidenced by the last two games). They're too slow and big to play that way for any stretch. Brown isn't calling for Kobe to launch up shots, he's calling plays down low. That's all Kupchak and Buss have left him with...its not difficult to understand that triangle or not their offense, with the current roster, is going to blow. Especially considering the bench is going to be even less effective as most of those guys have limited to zero experience running the triangle. Right now the only guy #####ing about bringing back the triangle is the same guy that just heaved up 57 shots in two games for no apparent reason. Two games in which the ugly slow down offense got them huge leads prior to the aforementioned brickfest. If Kobe wants to 'go rogue'...more power to him, but don't start blaming anyone else for the offense when it backfires.Mike Brown's the problem? He won 66 games with Mo Williams, 33 year old Zydrunas, Varajeo, Delonte and Boobie. He took an even worse team to the NBA Finals. He's no offensive genius, but with the right team leader, Mike Brown's good enough.
In fairness, it was fixable all those years, until last year. It's funny that people are reacting to these two losses like they're some heretofore unpredictable, new thing. This is pretty much the exact same thing that happened last year and in previous years, under Jackson. What does that tell you? It's the guys who've been here a while who are the problem. They're the ones who seemingly aren't mentally tough and disciplined enough to win games like these two. Until they solve that issue (which, since most of the culprits are vets into the double digits in terms of NBA experience at this point probably isn't realistic, Bynum is the only one remotely young enough to think could improve in this area - and he was self admittedly loafing last night) or until you get rid of the guys who are the source of this problem, nothing's going to change. The problem now is, they're no longer talented enough over the entire roster to make up for these kinds of lapses.
They've been saying it's fixable for years now - yet here we are again.
Metta is worth more than the vet minimum. He shouldn't necessarily be the starter on a championship caliber team, but as a first or second guy off the bench, he would be worth more than the minimum. Is there anyone on the Lakers' current roster worth more than the vet minimum besides Bryant, Bynum and Gasol?I'm thinking not.
Have you seen him play this year? He has about 1 decent game a month. The rest of the time he's pretty useless at best, detrimental otherwise. He was the 1st guy off the bench to start the year - it was brutal to watch.Metta is worth more than the vet minimum. He shouldn't necessarily be the starter on a championship caliber team, but as a first or second guy off the bench, he would be worth more than the minimum. Is there anyone on the Lakers' current roster worth more than the vet minimum besides Bryant, Bynum and Gasol?I'm thinking not.
I don't think there is anything the Lakers can do this year. They don't have anyone to trade who will bring back a game changing player. They could get a player or two in FA next year to bring them back to contender caliber, but this year looks like a loss. I do agree that Bynum can be a nice player to build around and they should do that. I disagree Kobe has two more rings left in him. I'll be suprised to see him get one more, and would put my money on none if I had to wager. The Heat, OKC, and Bulls are three very tough teams to beat in a 7 game series. Clippers are only getting better, and you'll likely have Howard changing the NBA landscape this offseason.OK, so after watching the Lakers all year I have come to the conclusion that they should NOT trade any of the big 3. If they can pull off some sort of deal involving draft picks, the 9 mil exception, or any of the players on the roster not named Bryant, Gasol, or Bynum in order to get a decent PG or small forward this year, they should do it. If they can't, then they should do the best they can this year and try to address these needs in the offseason and win the title next year.. Who knows? They may go deeper in the playoffs this year than anyone thinks.
I know I'm going to get blasted for this, but I believe that:
1. The Kobe/Andrew/Pau trio, with the right pieces around them which should not be that difficult to pick up, is good for another run at multiple championships.
2. Even after Kobe and Pau hang them up, we can still build a championship team around Andrew Bynum.
In short, I still think that, long term, its a very good time to be a Laker fan. Kobe should retire with at least two more rings, hopefully.
Anyone know if that Dallas pick is lottery protected? I mean the way the Mavs are going, its actually turning into a solid pick. Especially with the perceived depth in this years draft. The team is in dire need of young blood. At least they actually have two first rounders this year.
Dear god..Also, Kobe was truly spectacular yesterday. He's a legitimate contender for NBA MVP this year.

I believe it is not only lottery protected (unrealistic anyway) but protected to 20, which is ridiculous that the Lakers gave in to this stipulation when trading Odom at that time.Anyone know if that Dallas pick is lottery protected?
