Draft Day "Regerts" 2024 (1 Viewer)

It's time for one of my favorite pre-draft threads! As always, hat-tips to @Hot Sauce Guy for coming up with the idea originally and to @Leroy Hoard for the "regerts" joke.

Reminder: I view this thread as a good way to look back on your mistakes from previous drafts, either this year or in year's past, as you prepare for the next one. Hopefully you can take some lessons from it. But feel free to answer it however you want. It could be fantasy related (shouldn't have reached for a QB) or alcohol-related (my number of shots should never have exceeded the number of rounds in the draft)

Whatcha got?

My first one is waiting too long to start my draft prep this year. I'm usually doing mocks in late July/early August, but this year I didn't start dipping my toes in until mid-August. Then again, last year I completely honked two of my three drafts so did that prep really help? Still, I feel like I'm struggling to get a good feel for the rhythms of my drafts

Took James Connor in the 5th in a zero RB draft, when I knew I wanted Rashee Rice.

Neither would have made it back to me. But I think I will kick myself on this one.

Went against my own pre-draft plan and ended up spending way more on QB than expected, completely shut me out of that Diggs/Zay Flowers tier of receivers. The room knew the point I could go up to and took advantage.

I gave up FF regrets several years ago
  • half the time I *think* I've blundered, it ends up working out for me
  • often when I *think* I just had the perfect draft, it well below what I imagined
  • in season FAAB management, astute trades that benefit both sides, and having a good process in setting lineups is still super important
I used to always get to the end of summer and think I absolutely had a handle on which teams were going to be good and which ones would flounder.

Then in late September I'd realize that didn't go like I thought it would.

It's one of my favorite things about the NFL; every year is its own entity,

Good luck everyone, enjoy football almost being back!

my biggest regert is not having a redraft league this year.

1 dynasty, 1 keep 3...

There's something special about those first 2-3 rounds that's kinda zapped with the keeper... although, If I walked outta my draft with the 3 guys I got to keep, I'd be giddy like a schoolgirl, so I can't complain too much

Kinda froze up at 3.04 when my target, Mike Evans was taken. I had taken the sun god at 1.04 and Henry at 2.09. Laporta was next on my list but I didn’t want two lions that early. I didn’t like the top WRs on the sleeper generated list.
I took Achane. Probably too early although the bigger thing was I didn’t want to take two RBs in the top 3 rounds. In hindsight, I’d have taken waddle.

The bigger regret was leaving the screen for a brief time in the 10th and not getting back on in time to pick. Autoselect gave me Goedert at 10.09. When I wanted Rico suave Dowdle, who ended up going 11.03, one pick before my next. The consolation there was Dobbins.

It completely snuck up on me but my team in my main redraft league is older than I'd like - Kamara, Keenan, AJones, Ekeler, Hopkins...

Landing Mahomes in the 4th was a great value until I saw Dak go in the 10th.

Not really a regret I guess since Mahomes in the 4th in a 6 pt TD league is amazing, but there are always seems to be a guy who will go for an even better value you could've taken.

Took Nick Chubb in one draft in the 8th round to stash and hope.
Three rounds later Jerome Ford was still there so I said what the heck,he'll be a starter day one and if Chubb misses the season I'm ok with that
Then I fell asleep at the wheel with my last pick, Saw D'Onta Foreman there and thought not a bad last round flyer.
Then I looked at my roster and realized I had the entire Cleveland Browns backfield.
Not sure if I like that,or not ,I have mixed feelings.

Mentioned this in another thread: Had my first draft tonight, 12-team PPR. I was in the 9 spot and started off with AJ Brown, then Gibbs. I really like DJ Moore, but had been planning on waiting until the 4th to take him. But I guess his ADP has been rising on Yahoo, because he was at the top of the list as my pick came up, so I took him.

That's not necessarily my regret. I know I'm higher on him than most, but I think his talent can allow him to transcend any risks posed by his situation (rookie QB, too many mouths. etc). The part I regret is that the three teams picking after me proceeded to take all of the RB2s I was targeting (Mixon, Cook, Jacobs) before my next pick at 4.04, which suggests he might have still been available. In any event, I didn't like any of the RB options there, so I took another WR (Metcalf) and eventually ended up with Aaron Jones as my RB2. I think he's a little underrated, but there's an obvious injury risk plus a potentially crappy offense. I felt like I got good value on my other RBs (Javonte, Brooks and Herbert), so hopefully this won't come back to bite me. And if Moore comes through like I think he will, that will be worth it.

I guess the lesson is not to let circumstances throw you off your plan. Easy to see in retrospect, hard to do in the moment

Love that Metcalf pick and like this roster. I do think I’d rather have Cook or Jacobs knowing I’d get Metcalf there… but you don’t know that at the time. So I don’t think you did anything wrong. Just plenty of firepower at receiver on that bears offense.

Side note. Herbert is still a FA in both my money leagues and I’m intrigued to grab him but can’t.

I got burned by him last year, when he started off super slowly (along with the rest of the Bears offense) and then was starting to put things together before he got hurt.

But really, my investment in him is more a vote of no confidence in Swift than anything else. I just feel like he's very talented, yet every team seems to give up on him as soon as they have the chance. I figure if the Bears make that determination relatively early, Herbert could get another shot.

hi floor low celing play. I honestly am out on chubb and like ford, but could see foreman eating into the load so honestly I don't think it's the worst.

Assuming he's still on the roster.
Browns released RB D’Onta Foreman.

ESPN’s Field Yates — who knows what he’s talking about — speculates it could just be a procedural move as the Browns play cut-down day musical chairs, but at least for now, he’s a free agent. It would be a stunning move with Nick Cubb on the PUP list and Jerome Ford the only other viable Week 1 back on the roster. We would assume Yates is correct and Foreman will be “back” some time in the next 48 hours.

I'm double booked for drafts tomorrow night, starting at 7 and 8 pm.
7 pm draft is an auction with shallow benches so hopefully I'll be done before 8 even starts...

Don't worry he'll be back before week one with a non-gaurenteed contract

Had my final draft tonight: longtime family league, 14-team 0.5 PPR. Not necessarily huge regrets, but wondering if I did the right thing.

First, in the 5th round, I knew I wanted to take my WR2. I generally don't spend a lot of time thinking about things like overlapping bye weeks and RB-WR stacks, but I will sometimes use them as a tiebreaker. So I look at my options and realized that, of the three guys I was considering, Dell was a stack with my RB2 (Mixon), Kirk was a stack with my RB1 (Etienne) and Ridley had the same bye week as my WR1 (ARSB), plus the fact that it was so early made me especially wary. Ultimately, I just decided to draft the guy I thought was most talented and went with Dell.

Later in the draft, I realized I was the only one left who hadn't taken a QB. I was targeting Goff because of his dome schedule plus the ARSB stack, but as my pick was coming up, I realized CWatson was still available. I felt like that was good value, and I figured Goff was certain to make it back to me, so I took Watson. Of course, my cousin snaked me even though he already had Hurts. So instead I went with Tua (added Herbert later)
