What was the reason for Kellen Clemens (Jets) rise up the boards in recent weeks? Was using a mid-2nd round pick too high?

Teams also may have felt that certain players fit their schemes better. Sometimes it's not so much about the talent as it is how well they'll function in the team plan.

Wow, tough questions. Here is my view:

QB

Clemens -ESPN's draft coverage showed quite a bit of film on him and broke him down. Jaws and someone else were raving about him and how he was able to look off safeties and come off his #1 option. Sounds like a guy a team could work with. He's a little short IMO to be a 2nd round pick.

RB

Michael Robinson - Looks like the 49ers were looking for an athelete. I doubt he plays much RB. I bet he ends up at WR.

Leon Washington - More of a 3rd down back than Harrison. He provides depth for Blaylock IMO

Daniels - He and Harrison are not very comparable. I guess the Ravens were looking for more of a power back.

WR

Jennings - 4th WR off the board was a crapshoot. Jennings showed well in All-Star games and on tape.

Hester - looks like the Bears wanted a returner

Reid - see Hester

D. Williams - Must have been more of a guy scouts liked rather than GMs

TE

Pope and Byrd were probably over-rated. Sheffler didn't look go to me, but what do I know?

I've posted links to this a few times, but it's one of the more interesting articles I've read in a while: College Quarterbacks Through the Prism of Statistics.Note that Charlie Whitehurst has a huge advantage over Brodie Croyle according to the author's conclusions, for whatever that's worth.

I think the only way to answer all those questions is to say, "because."

I realize that there aren't any clear cut answers, just wanted to get some thoughts as to why WE THINK some NFL teams saw some lesser players as being better choices over some better players. (according to what most of us on these boards thought leading up to the draft anyways)Nobody even mentioned Tarvaris Jackson's name when giving QB rankings, yet the Vikings decided to use a 2nd round pick on him ahead of Brody Croyle and Charlie Whitehurst?

Some scouts rated Demetrius Williams as the #1 WR prospect (consensus top 5 at least), yet he ended up being the 14th WR off the board.

Willie Reid in the 3rd round....is he a legit WR or just taken as a Kick Returner? I'm assuming a Kick Returner, and in that case isn't a 3rd rounder a steep price to pay?

Same for Devin Hester.....a 2nd rounder for a glorified Kick Returner? In college he struggled picking up the playbook to play Offense, and not good enough to stick as a DB, so how does that translate to the NFL?

The actual value for these quarterbacks is all subjective. For the past two months we have only heard honest opinions from a select few; Kiper, Mayock et al. But ultimately their opinions don't count because they are not going to be doing the actual grooming of these quarterbacks. The other 32 opinions that actually do matter, we'll probably never know because (a) everything before the draft is smoke and (b) everything after the draft is cake 'We got the guy we want'.

I think Clemens was drafted way too high by the Jets. I definitely think the reason they did it was to stop the Vikings from grabbing him first. If both teams had a decent option at QB, Clemens would be a 3rd-4th rounder.Tarvaris Jackson is all about potential. Ton of arm strength, coaching staff probably figures they can teach him the pro-game.

I never really though Croyle to be much of a pro prospect. Alabama's offense didn't exactly set the world on fire.

These two have me absolutely confused. Why Leonard Pope dropped so low is beyond me. What was he the fifth TE chosen? I saw a lot of college football last year and Pope was phenomenal, second best TE I saw. He was unbelievably athletetic with great hands. Thomas ahead of Byrd also puzzles me. As a USC fan, I saw plenty of his games and the dude was real reliable. They would have a 3rd and 8 and if the WR's were covered, Byrd seemed to make a play for them. I thought Byrd was the 4th best TE.
