As I contemplate week 1 playoffs, it made me think of the draft next year (yes, you can never start too early!). One of things my league does is try and use finishing spots during playoffs to determine seeding for next year's draft. Currently, we have the top 6 teams go to the playoffs where each division winner (2 divisions) has a first round bye. The bottom 6 teams go to a toilet bowl where the 7th and 8th ranked teams get byes in the toilet bowl.
To determine draft spots, we try to keep all of the team owners involved. So the toilet bowl winner gets first choice of draft positions, where as the SuperBowl winner gets the last draft spot. The seeding goes like this:
1. Toilet Bowl Winner
2. Toilet Bowl - Runner-up
3. 3rd place TB finisher
4. 4th place TB finisher
5. 5th place TB finisher
6. Biggest Loser of TB
7. Biggest Loser of Playoffs
8. 5th team overall
9. 4th team overall
10. 3rd team overall
11. Superbowl Runner-up
12. Superbowl Champion
So for instance, next year the Toilet Bowl winner can choose their draft spot, so they are not limited to have to take 1st if they don't want it. We used to randomize the draft seeding into top half and bottom half, but this is the first year we are using the new seeding method. As I review, it makes me think I may have screwed up in seeding our playoffs team, such that once I am out of the title game, I should really tank as much as possible. I'm actually debating about changing it to the following:
1. Toilet Bowl Winner
2. Toilet Bowl - Runner-up
3. 3rd place TB finisher
4. 4th place TB finisher
5. 5th place TB finisher
6. Biggest Loser of TB
7. 3rd team overall
8. 4th team overall
9. 5th team overall
10. Biggest Loser of Playoffs
11. Superbowl Runner-up
12. Superbowl Champion
Thoughts? In addition, how do you guys handle your seeding strategy and how has it worked for you?
