draft strategy question (ppr league) (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
We have a 10 team, PPR league (6pts per TD, 1/25 passing and 1/10 yrd rush/rec.). With the #2 draft slot I expect to be able to choose either LT or Alexander (leaning LT's direction b/c of receptions).

Typically, I would draft RB/RB, due to RB depth and at the #19 slot, I'd expect to get a decent 2nd tier RB. The issue is that with our point system, WRs are very valuable and the depth is large, so I'm wondering if a top tier WR at #21 is better than going for a good, but not great RB at that point.

Am I better off going RB/RB/RB, then WR/WR.....or, maybe getting a WR at the end of the 2nd round/early 3rd. RB depth seems to drop very much by about 15-20 RBs, but if I wait until Round 4 for the WRs, the top guys will be gone.

I'm leaning toward going RB heavy for round 1-3, expecting to have something like LT, Ronnie Brown, and Julius Jones as my top 3, then settling for WRs like Chris Chambers, Driver, Javon Walker, in round 4 and 5. Thoughts, suggestions?

10 teams?

LT, Moss or Boldin, Boldin or Wayne, and plenty of good RBs like Foster/CTaylor/Dunn/Parker to pick on the turn in rounds 4/5.

My strategy suggestions would depend at least partially on your league lineup requirements. If it's a start 3 WR league, I'd look to get 2 WR in rounds 2 and 3. I'd probably also do that if it's a 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 flex league.

If it's a 2 RB and 2 WR league, or if it's a 1 RB, 2 WR, 2 flex league, then you want at least one WR but could take either a RB or WR with the other.

I'm in a 10 team ppr league. We start 2rb, 3wr .

Let me tell you the jerk is right. In ppr if you don't get 2 wr at the 2/3 turn You will be scrambling all year.

I went against this last year cause the top 6 WRs were gone by my second pick. Mistake.

By the time we got to the 4/5 there weren't even table scraps.

However, there were still decent rb choices to be made, if you can believe it.

The problem is this; once the rest of the league can see you're a toothless tiger w/o the WRs, they won't trade you one for love or money.

I had two good RBs on the bench for most of the year that I couldn't trade.

Tough year and a mistake I will never make again.

With 10 teams, I'd go for at least 1 WR at the 2nd/3rd round turn.

If you do have 3 WRs required, WR/WR is a definite option.

At picks 39 and 42, you'd have to expect a lot of talent still there.

WRs will go very deep.

After about 20 RBs you'll be picking and choosing. You may want to consider an "either / or" grouping at the 4/5 turn - something like Benson and TJones, Maroney / Dillon, or Deuce / Bush.

Gado / Green should be available at 6/7 or even 8/9.

Good post Jeff, definitely grouping is a good strategy this year. The bolded part is only partially accurate though. (caveat, i'm in a ppr)

While WRs are deep, you are setting yourself up to face his Boldin, Chad Johnson combo with your TJ Housh, Bobby Engram combo. Not a pleasant thought.

In a start 3 wr scenario you almost have to go rb, wr, wr.

Then use the grouping later in the draft for more rb. Remembering of course, that there will be injuries and surprises at rb as the season moves on.

And I'll tell you, it seems easier to catch that lightning in a bottle at rb2 than WR 1,2, and 3.

Now, in our league we have no roster limits on position players. So we can roster as many "projects' as we want, provided we stay under the 16 man limit.

And the winners use all their spots for upside.

Gado / Green should be available at 6/7 or even 8/9.

I'm glad you mentioned this. Gado/ Green could be a nice RB2 package for a team of powerhouse WRs.

Price should be right. Hmmm (wheels turning)

Thanks Jeff

Our league requirements are 2RB, 2 WR, 1 Flex.

Posted below, but we start 2RB, 2 WR, 1 Flex, then standard for rest. 9 total starters. By the way, I was planning to wait until 6 or 7 to take a QB, as I normally do. WHile this might not happen this year, some guy in our league took Carson Palmer in round 9 last year. Talk about value.Winner of our league took SA in 1, then LJ in round 6 and Mike Anderson in round 7. Lost 1 game all year. But we've added the PPR this season, so WRs will be more valuable.
