Draft Thoughts (1 Viewer)

- I alternated between the NFL Network and ESPN coverage throughout the draft. The NFL Network removed a lot of the drama from the broadcast by constantly revealing the picks before the commissioner took the podium. I found myself more entertained by the ESPN broadcast, where you didn't know who would be picked until it was officially announced by Goodell (what's the point of watching that long, dramatic walk up to the podium when you already know what he's going to say?). Tisk tisk, NFL Network. You dropped the ball today.

- ESPN's crew is also a little better IMO. I like Mayock, but Gruden is great and there's something classic about Kiper on draft day. Tom Jackson was an added bonus, visibly dismayed as he witnessed the continued destruction of the Broncos by Josh McDaniels. The only downside was Steve Young. Great quarterback. Absolutely brutal commentator. He's not articulate and his knowledge of the players/teams isn't impressive (Austin Miles anyone?). You could practically see Kiper and Gruden facepalming every time he opened his mouth. He and Emmitt should go on tour together.

- Sam Bradford to the Rams. They have no receivers and no line. Other than that, it's a great situation. Seriously though, if his rookie season doesn't end with him being carried off the field on a stretcher, I think this will turn out to be a good pick. You need a franchise QB to compete in today's NFL and the Rams might have found their guy today.

- Did Al Davis miraculously remember to take his medication today? Or maybe he found a hot tub time machine and went back to 1975 and retrieved the younger version of himself that actually knew how to run a football club. I was gripping my couch with anticipation when the Raiders were on the clock, awaiting another classic blunder, but there was no such payoff today. For the first time in a while, the Raiders made a perfectly sensible pick in the first round and got themselves a good football player. Rolando McClain should be an anchor in their lineup for years.

- Poor CJ Spiller. He had a big grin on his face after he was picked by the Bills at #9. I wonder if he'll be smiling when Buffalo is sitting in last place with a 3-9 record and he's getting hammered in the backfield on every carry in a snowstorm, stretching to catch passes from a carousel of crappy quarterbacks. I've had my doubts about Spiller for a while and this destination makes me think he's doomed for more of a McFadden/Bush career trajectory than superstardom.

- Congratulations to the Jacksonville Jaguars for making this year's first "WTF?" pick by selecting Cal DT Tyson Alualu 10th overall. I had seen Alualu projected as a late first rounder and if he ends up being a solid starter then this won't be a bad pick in hindsight, but today it looks like a laugher.

- Mathews to the Chargers at 12. I like it. Did they overpay? Maybe a little bit, but he wasn't going to be there at 28 and he's the only surefire bell cow running back in this draft. They got their guy and he'll make them a better team from day one.

- Is Josh McDaniels a younger, more insane Al Davis? First he runs Jay Cutler out of town. Then he spends his entire 2009 draft on guys who will be working at Kragen Auto Parts three years from now. That should've been enough to qualify him for a spot in the Matt Millen Hall of Fame, but he's outdone himself this year with personnel moves that could be more disastrous than Helen Keller driving a tank through rush hour traffic on the 101. First he gives away one of the best receivers in football for two second round picks. Then he passes up Dez Bryant for Demaryius Thomas. I'm one of the biggest Thomas fans you'll find, but even I can't justify passing up a can't-miss franchise receiver for a player with similar skills, but a much steeper learning curve. Then there's the cherry on this dog crap sundae: Tim Tebow in the first round at #25 overall. Wow. That pick will either look like pure genius in hindsight or it will be the butt of endless draftnik jokes for the next two decades. If only McDaniels had brains as big as his balls.

- Jerry Jones should hire a criminal attorney asap because he just committed armed robbery. The Cowboys were already a scary offense with Tony Romo, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Felix Jones, and Marion Barber. Add Dez Bryant to the mix and you just might be attacked by the US Army on the grounds that you're stockpiling too many WMDs (plus I think there's oil in Texas). After suffering the consequences of passing on Randy Moss for more than a decade, Jerry finally redeems himself by grabbing the best skill player in the draft at #24. What a steal.

- Did I mention Tim Tebow already? This is by far the wackiest pick in the first round and the most intriguing. Tebow was borderline disastrous at the Senior Bowl, he's considered a raw passer despite his college career, he hasn't played in a pro style offense that forced him to make a lot of difficult decisions under duress, and his mechanics need a serious overhaul. Does that sound like first round QB to you? The thing is, Tebow was a prolific player at the college level and he's going to work his butt off to become the best player he can be. Most people agree that he has already made tremendous progress to his mechanics over the past few months, but that doesn't mean he won't revert to old habits under pressure when the live bullets are flying. This pick could either be brilliant or an unmitigated horror show.

- Kyle Wilson at 29. Why do I suddenly feel like there's a massive conspiracy to let the Jets get every good player in the NFL? Seriously. They stole Sanchez and Greene last year in the draft. They got Holmes for a 5th round pick and Cromartie for dirt cheap. Now they've added a lockdown corner who was talked about as a potential top 10-15 pick with one of the last picks in the first round. At this rate their entire roster will be Pro Bowlers by about 2013. No more trips to Hawaii. Just move the game to the Meadowlands.

- Jahvid Best to the Lions at 30. Love it. Kevin Smith was never the answer even before his injuries. The Lions should've picked Percy Harvin over Brandon Pettigrew last season, but they've made amends for that mistake by signing Nate Burleson and drafting Best. Best will give them a dynamic Warrick Dunn/Reggie Bush type of punch out of the backfield and slot to go along with the Stafford-to-Calvin show. Of course, it's the Lions, so Best will probably step on a land mine sometime in the next five minutes.

- LOL Jimmy Clausen. I had a bust vibe all along and it seems like the NFL brass shared my sentiment. If he's going to be a horrible pro then he's most likely going to end up in Buffalo, Oakland, or Cleveland tomorrow. My money's on Buffalo. Sorry Bills fans.

Nice analysis. The only thing I disagree with is your take on the Ram WR's. I think with a better qb, Avery could be a star. He does have to get better at beating press coverage and toughen up some, but I've been hearing he added weight/muscle, so at least it seems he realizes his weakness. We'll see what happens, but he's shown enough flash to warrant giving him another chance to show us - this time last year, most were pretty impressed w/ him after his rookie year.

edit: as a jet fan, I can't help but be absolutely thrilled at the Wilson pick. The Jet D is going to be scary good (and the O won't be bad either.)

Eh. He's brittle and he's a midget. He's fast and he has talent, so maybe he can become a great #2, but I don't see him being a frontline #1 ever. They need a body there, but the cupboard is already bare in this draft now that Bryant and Thomas are gone. Next year.

Great analysis in the op.

I sure hope the Rams can protect Bradford, for his shoulder's sake. If they can, it's a great pick.

I thought the Seahawks did ok, too.

Great job EBF and well written but the thing I have to mention is the Eagles trading up and selecting Brandon Graham who is a good player but hardly the right pick IMO. The Eagles had three undersized DE already and no secondary how is Graham going to help them cover Dez, Witten, Jones and Austin.

The Seahawks and 49ers both had quiet drafts because they didn't grab any skills guys, but if the players they pick end up being solid starters then both teams will be satisfied. I know as a Niner fan that our draft would've received great grades if we had grabbed Clausen, but I'm ecstatic that we didn't pick him because I don't really think he was worth the gamble that high. I feel like a lot of teams did well to grab talented football players who will help them win. I had guys like Mathews, McClain, Graham, Iupati, and Weatherspoon pegged as solid first round talents who offered an excellent combination of football production and workout numbers. I think a lot of teams will be happy with their picks, although there are always some busts in these things.

Maybe he'll get to Romo before he can get the ball to any of those guys?

Agreed on JAX, DEN, and DAL. The Jags just don't get it. Horrible value. Given that they need a 2nd Rd pick, this was the opportunity to get one by moving down, adding that pick, and taking the lineman they wanted with a late-first. DEN is just being stupid, as seems to be the Josh McDaniel m.o. DAL really lucked out there.

Nice posting.

I'm no expert when it comes to DE/OLB tweeners, but that guy was a flat out beast at the Senior Bowl. Maybe a bit of a reach there, but the NFL puts a premium on getting a good pass rush. if Larry English can be a first round pick then I don't mind Graham going that high. Admittedly, I don't know much about Philly's defense or their team needs, but just looking at the pick in a vacuum, I don't think it's horrible. He's a good football player. Just a few inches short.

Nice writeup.

The Rams Oline is not a strength, but they are not as bad as many assume. First, there have been multiple injuries for two straight years. Second, the QBs have been rotten and too often held onto the ball too long. Lastly, the Rams ranked in the middle of the pack, #17, in sacks allowed per pass attempt (somebody else's numbers I am accepting). They actually run-blocked well despite their injuries.

The Rams do need a legit WR1... they have a couple of decent WR2s in Avery and Robinson, but nothing else.

Nice analysis. The only thing I disagree with is your take on the Ram WR's. I think with a better qb, Avery could be a star. He does have to get better at beating press coverage and toughen up some
..and stop dropping the ball and running bad routes. But yeah, other than that, he could be a solid #2.

Adding Best, Burleson, and Scheffler may do a lot for Stafford and Calvin.

Don't congratulate yourself too soon. Dropping to the second round doesn't indicate he'll be a bust or a horrible pro. A number of today's top QBs came from the 2nd round or later. I thought the Bills would take him at 9, but beyond that, said that no other team would really want a QB aside from the Vikings. There's no need to trade up to get a QB in the first if you don't think anyone's going to bother taking one.

Agree, why do we watch if they blurb it out right b4 the Commish walks up? They aren't breaking it weeks ahead of time, just allow it to unfold.

Thank God I'm not the only one on Steve Young, he had no business up there tonight, sounds like an idiot. Only trumped by Chris Berman who must have flipped thru ESPN the mag before hosting tonight.

Another in the long line of Tim Couches, Akili Smiths, David Carrs...I don't believe in him on the next level.

- Did Al Davis miraculously remember to take his medication today? Or maybe he found a hot tub time machine and went back to 1975 and retrieved the younger version of himself that actually knew how to run a football club. Agree 100%

Was he the best dressed or what? Love that kid.

They overpaid by leaps and bounds.

Fantastic thread EBF

Chargers season ticket holder here. Loved the pick of Mathews but didn't like the price. No. 40 overall in the second round is blood money and San Diego still has glaring holes at the nose position with the departure of Jamal Williams and the right side of the O-Line is anemic. I know it is supposed to be a deep draft but not sure 3rd and 4th rounders, even in a deep draft, will be able to fill considerable short comings immediately out of the gate. I could be wrong.

It is nice to be a Lions fan and enjoy the draft at the same time. I think the Lions made out like bandits. The Best trade was great and with Calvin demanding so much attention, it's nice to have a game breaking RB who can make defenses pay for covering Calvin with half their defense.

How did you determine that the NFL brass considers Clausen a bust because he wasn't amongst the first 32 picks?

Very good analysis and I agree with most of it. I couldn't believe that the Jags took Alualu where they did and the biggest surprise as you said was Oakland actually making a great pick. I was thinking that Cable must have gotten Al Davis drunk or drugged him and put him in a corner with a Rubics cube to keep him occupied. As to Avery being fast and a midget. Just remember, Steve Smith (Car.) was a fast midget too that people only thought would be a special teams punt and kick returner. Not saying Avery is Smitty, but you can't overlook guys like that. Get a decent QB with time to throw (and not from his back) and Avery/Robinson can be decent players. St. Louis definitely needs to take care of the offensive line now, because as you also noted and I also believe, Bradford can be a franchise QB if he isn't killed first.

The Best trade was unnecessary. Best would have been there at #34.

Good analysis EBF. I totally agree with you about the NFLN coverage. I had to TIVO the draft as I got there late and found myself wishing I had DVR'd ESPN. I'll watch Kiper and Gruden tonight and then get Mayock's thoughts later. I really wish Mayock and Gruden were together as I love both of those guys. Also, Eisen is ten times better than the Berman of today.

As for the picks, I agree regarding Spiller. I already saw him as a guy that was unfairly being compared to Chris Johnson. Now he's going to a place where his speed will be a bit neutralized and a team with a horrible OL. He might make some big special team plays, but he's going to be picked too high in a ton of drafts, imo.

I always thought Jahvid Best was the best runner in this draft and I still do. Contingent of course that his concussion issues are a non-issue moving forward. Detroit is a great location for him.

Dez White fell into a great situation and this is great for the Cowboys. I can't imagine it's a great situation for White though. Kind of hard to get excited about drafting White when he's got all that talent around him. It will definetely be 3 years before he can be a number 1 fantasy WR in Dallas.

And Mathews at San Diego just cemented the number 1 fantasy pick. Talent and situation merge and give us a no-brainer for the #1 dynasty rookie. It's hard to even imagine a scenario where he fails. You can go ahead and pencil him in for a top 20 season as a RB and know that top 10 is a very good possibility with the red-zone opportunities he'll get for that potent offense.

The Best trade was unnecessary. Best would have been there at #34.
He would have if you assume the teams between the Detroit and Minnesota picks would all keep their picks, but there were a ton of trades yesterday and some other team could have moved up to take Best just as easily as the Lions did. The Lions did not want to take that chance and I think they did the right thing, especially since they didn't give up much in the deal.

:lmao: They have the starting CBs from the 2007 NE Patriots 16-0 team. They signed Marlin Jackson to play safety and they have Quentin Mikell as the other safety. I think you are underestimating their secondary a bit. Besides, if you have a strong pass rush and can get to the QB faster, your secondary doesn't need to cover as long. See the 2007 NY Giants who had a no name secondary.

It's nice to see over the last two years that the new Lions regime seems to know what they're doing.

My friends and I always play some games to follow along with the draft every year. One that we always do is pick up whatever crappy draft guide is on sale from the local 7-Eleven (that has a 7 round mock in it), and we each pick out a player from that guide. The object being to see who can pick the player who gets drafted highest in comparison to where they are slotted in that mock. Due to following the boards here I knew Tyson Alualu was rising to the late 1st/early 2nd range, so I made him my pick considering he was listed as a 5th rounder in that mock. My friends were absolutely shocked (as was I), when he went #10th overall.

I'm not sure there's a single thing in that paragraph that you couldn't have also said about Vince Young (minus the hard worker part), and he went 3rd overall.

I agree on the Brittle comment and being small. As well as more of a #2 not #1. But there is still a lot of talent here in the 2nd rd. A guy like Benn(being big and physical) could be just what the doctor order for the Rams and Bradford. I also am still a firm believer in Laurant. Showed #1 skill set last year! Just needs to stay healthy.

I wouldn't paint such a bleak outlook for the Rams just yet. The smart move for them here would be to move down at least a few slots here to a QB needy team and target one of Benn, Tate, or one of my top WR sleepers...........who shall remain nameless right now, I have too many rookie drafts this weekend......The point is, several guys still available have the potential to truly blossom into a #1 WR .....

Not commenting on the paragraph here, but the two qbs are very different coming out. Tebow has much better footwork at this point. He was a great short-yardage runner in college, but not a breakaway threat like Young, who is also tremendously strong in and out of the pocket. Young handed off to his backs in shorter yardage much more. Young was knocked for his low and generally odd release but was considered to have moderate to good arm strength with a (not stellar, but) fairly quick release. He got it out of there. Tebow's release looks a little slow and his arm strength...I'm not sure where that falls. Not saying any of this indicates how he'll do. Just saying they're very different guys.
minus the hard worker part
Young was noted for being an exceptionally hard worker and the team leader in workouts in college and was expected by most (as with Tebow) to be the same once he got to Tennessee. He was a hard worker when he got there, and then there was the well-documented bad stretch. Since then, it appears he's turned things around to become a team leader and exemplary in this regard.

Great analysis in the op.

I sure hope the Rams can protect Bradford, for his shoulder's sake. If they can, it's a great pick.

I thought the Seahawks did ok, too.
Bulger was sacked how many times in the past 3 seasons?? avg'd 34 sacks per year , over past 4 seasons, and that includes missing 7 games last year!!!Bradford going to get killed if they don't do something about that o-line.

Bradford might've been the riskiest pick in the history of the NFL- a guy with a twice-blown throwing shoulder who played in a not-so-NFL-friendly offense , who wasn't particularly good in the redzone or when under pressure, and only runs off to the right when the pocket breaks down.

Is Josh McDaniels a younger, more insane Al Davis? First he runs Jay Cutler out of town. Then he spends his entire 2009 draft on guys who will be working at Kragen Auto Parts three years from now. That should've been enough to qualify him for a spot in the Matt Millen Hall of Fame, but he's outdone himself this year with personnel moves that could be more disastrous than Helen Keller driving a tank through rush hour traffic on the 101.
Awesome

- I alternated between the NFL Network and ESPN coverage throughout the draft. The NFL Network removed a lot of the drama from the broadcast by constantly revealing the picks before the commissioner took the podium. I found myself more entertained by the ESPN broadcast, where you didn't know who would be picked until it was officially announced by Goodell (what's the point of watching that long, dramatic walk up to the podium when you already know what he's going to say?). Tisk tisk, NFL Network. You dropped the ball today.
I agree. I preferred the NFLN analysts but the super spoilers made me switch back over to ESPN. It takes so much of the excitement out of it.

Yeah...I said if."If they can't" changes everything and makes me wonder why they wouldn't go a different route. At any rate, I wish (as always with rookie qbs, but esp with a guy with his shoulder history) that he'd have gone somewhere with a better recent history on the o-line.

I wish you could combine the draft coverages to one team - Eisen, Gruden, Kiper and Mayock. That's all you would need.

Oh and the ESPN girls.

The Rams can slide down a few spots if they find a partner and still get a Tackle to protect their investment. It will be interesting to see if they can do so, and if they do.

I'm not sure there's a single thing in that paragraph that you couldn't have also said about Vince Young (minus the hard worker part), and he went 3rd overall.
Yea, and it was a really bad pick IMO. Young is a much better athlete though. Tebow won't be much of a running threat at the NFL level.
