Drew Brees Thread (1 Viewer)

DAL has a good pass defense. That said, this is Drew Brees and there was some bulletin board quotes this week from the Cowboys about the Saints. I’m thinking the Saints come out firing. Could be all Kamara/Ingram though.

His home/away splits are pretty glaring--20 TD's at home to 9 on the road and this is against a solid D.

Drew Brees completed 18-of-28 passes for 127 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Saints' 13-10, Week 13 loss to the Cowboys.

Brees entered halftime 7-of-13 for 39 yards and was scarcely better after the break. His touchdown was a 30-yarder to Keith Kirkwood in a crowded part of the end zone. His pick was a truly inexplicable miss to Alvin Kamara. Brees unloaded the ball behind his running back as pressure was in his face. It ended up being the Saints' final play of the night. The Cowboys played absolutely lights-out defense, but Brees needed to be better. He undoubtedly will be in Week 13 when the Saints travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Bucs' barely-there defense.

Does this performance, in the conference, on national TV hurt his chances at MVP?
It should, IMO. Especially with a second loss tonight, the only edge Brees currently has over Mahomes is "fewer interceptions." That's not enough for MVP IMO, especially if Mahomes ends with some absurd totals like 5000 yards / 50 TDs.

I really wanted this to be the year that Brees added the MVP to his resume, he deserved it the year Rodgers won. But after this performance on TNF, if Mahomes stays hot he may have hurt his chances.

I agree - and there's plenty of time for Mahomes to lay some eggs, KC's schedule down the stretch isn't a cakewalk. They still have the Seahawks, Chargers (on a Thursday), and the Ravens aren't chumps either. But if voting was held today, I think Mahomes would get it.

One thing that's fascinated me is how the super inexperienced guy (Mahomes) has been so much more consistent than the seasoned vet (Brees). They both have a 400+ yard masterpiece game, but Mahomes' lowest yardage output this season has been 249, while Brees now has *six* games with fewer yards than that. Mahomes has broken 300 yards in 9 of his 11 games this year.

He's on pace for ~5,300 yards / 54 TDs passing alone, with some rushing on top.  And two of his remaining games are vs. the Raiders.

I was indifferent to D. Brees before this season but now I find myself disliking him and the Saints.  Some of it isn't his fault, but the lobbying by ex-players on NFL Network (and elsewhere) for him to win the MVP is distasteful.  Also, stopping the game for him to celebrate the stupid passing yardage record was lame.  Finally, Sean Payton seems like a jerk.

Which of it is his fault?

So you still pull for the Stillers and the rapist?

This has taken a turn I didn't expect.  I just wanted to share may feelings about Brees and the Saints.  I'm not going to debate Tomlin, Big Ben or the Steelers - feel free to dislike them if you want.

IMO Brees doesn't deserve the MVP this year; Mahomes clearly does.  That being said, I wouldn't be totally surprised if Brees won, or if they do "co-MVP's." It's the only major accomplishment he hasn't achieved, and although he doesnt' deserve it this year, he might get it as a "lifetime achievement" kind of recogniation.

MVP is based on private ballots, so co-MVP is quite unlikely. If it were an open committee they might have a discussion and agree to do that.

There are definitely some folks who will vote for Brees because of his overall career. But it probably won't be enough for him to top Mahomes.

Love Drew but he's not winning this season. When the offense stalled a few weeks back then it cinched it for me. I can't recall if the MVP is given before the SB but his only hope this year would be in a SB game against the Chiefs. Otherwise, Mahomes has earned MVP for the season.

Didn’t Peyton & McNair get co-mvps one year?  Is it different voting now?

They tied, 16-16 in a vote of 50 journalists in 2004. It also happened with Barry and Favre in 1997, and Norm Van Brocklin and Joe Schmidt in 1960. Pretty unlikely to happen again.

Well, in that case, I WOULD be shocked if Brees wins it over Mahomes (or gets to be co-MVPs).

I’m not gonna research it but NFLN had the stat that the 11:28 minute TD Drive Vs the Eagles was the longest TOP TD drive in the NFL since 1970. I don’t know if that means there was one longer in 1970 or the usual post merger stat but regardless that was one for the ages. The Eagles were absolutely suffocated in the 3rd and that was all Brees. That was Montana quality stuff. Magnificent.

Might just be the disappointment talking ... but I'm having a hard time seeing the Saints have anywhere near a successful season in 2019. Too much depends on how refs call games, both in the regular season and in the playoffs.

During the 2018 regular season, early on, when PI was called tightly and QBs protection rules were given teeth? The Saints thrived. Late season, when PI, helmet-to-helmet, and QB protection suddenly got de-emphasized? The Saints struggled.

And then, even if the 2019 Saints eke out a playoff spot ... they'll just fall victim to some 'let 'em play!" whistle-swallower with some agenda or another (whether a personal one or not).

Definitely its the disappointment talking...but I'm 100% right there with you brother.  Been a loooooong year getting over the Minnesota Miracle whiff, waiting to get back to the playoffs, clawing back against Philly, and now this.  Why as a fan do I want to go through another entire year of "we were so close, we'll be back, etc." when it's just gonna be some different fluke thing that ends our season again?

In the grand scheme, I get it, I'm upset about losing in the Div Round and the NFC championship....first world problems.  But two years in a row I have truly felt that we have had a good enough team to get to and win a SB, and two years in a row now some freak incident has caused an entire year's worth of work and buildup to be for naught.

A point that has been missed in all the controversy about the call: Brees missed the throw and it should have been intercepted. If he put the ball to the outside he may have completed it, and he definitely would have had more of a chance of getting the PI call.

Helmet-to-helmet should've been called. Wasn't just PI in play.

Montana wouldn’t have missed the easy throws Brees missed in the Rams game to seal it

When you look at his numbers since the Dallas game, you can't help but wonder if Father Time has caught Brees.  His arm is clearly not as strong as it used to be.  Look at the first play against Philly last week. Ginn had the defender beat, but Brees under threw the deep ball and it was picked off.  And I have seen a few other passes of his lately that seemed...off.

Be interesting to see if he retires

I certainly agree that he looks like the years are taking a toll on him

If he does go, it does so much damage to Kamara.  I've never seen a qb dink and dunk to the rbs like brees

Brees' deep ball is largely gone. He can sometimes still connect deep-ish (~30 yards) with anticipation and timing ... but gone are the days when he can just whip it 50 yards and get it to the spot of his choice. To achieve the same distance now, he needs to put more air under the ball and defenders have time to catch up.

I will say, though, that a bigger problem from the Dallas game forward was that (a) the Saints offensive line couldn't get healthy, and (b) the league started loosening up A LOT on defensive PI. The latter was an effect felt league-wide after Thaksgiving ... suddenly defenses seemed to catch right up to all the explosive offenses.

Def agree. This is yet another reason the anger and resentment are so strong right now. We KNOW we are on the back end of a legendary QB career. We can hope, but odds aren't in our favor to get back there again.

So Brees just redid his current deal.  They moved salary to signing bonus, creating $10.8m in cap space this year, but moving that hit to next year where he's now going to count at least $21.3M if he's on the team or not.

Does this mean that Brees is planning to play this year AND next year?

I read somewhere that his cap number is about $40M in 2020.  I'm the least cap-knowledgeable person I know, so I (probably stupidly) have to wonder - what happens if he retires after the 2019 season?  Would he count anything on the 2020 cap then?

His cap number is only about $16m in 2020, from what I see on over the cap.  Not sure of the answer to your question, though.  But if they are moving a hit from 2019 to 2020 by converting it to bonus money, do the Saints think they have him for 2 more years?
