Lions' Stanton sidelined for four weeks

by Tom Kowalski

Friday August 22, 2008, 11:18 AM

A sprained ligament in his right thumb is expected to sideline Detroit Lions quarterback Drew Stanton for the first three games of the regular season. The Lions have a bye in the fourth week and Stanton, the team's No. 3 quarterback, is expected to return after that.

Stanton jammed his thumb into another player's shoulder pad during Thursday's workout. He was recently examined by team physican Dr. Kyle Anderson.

"There's no fracture and no surgery is indicated,'' said Lions athletic trainer Dean Kleinschmidt. "The treatment is to immobilize it so he's in a cast for four weeks. He'll be re-evaluated in two weeks, take the cast off and re-evaluate him and in all likelihood put (the cast) back on. In four weeks it comes off, a couple days of strengthening and he should be throwing quickly after the cast comes off.''

According to that timetable, Stanton should be back in uniform by Detroit's fourth game on Oct. 5 against the Chicago Bears.

Man this guy just cannot stay out of the infirmary. I realize this injury was a freak one but...seriously. Didn't he miss time each season at Sparty too? It sure seemed like it...

I never thought he'd start over Kitna, but what I hate about this is that it hurts his chance to even get late season reps once the Lions are mathematically out of playoff contention and are thinking about next year.

The cream always rises to the top. If he's better than Orlovsky, he'll get his chance. He's a Millen pick and there's no one more desperate to have the fruits of their "labor" work out for them.

That sucks. Was hoping he would move up and possibly provide similar play to Kitna should the Lions decide to go with a younger QB once they are out of contention. That seems a lot less likely now.

The never ending drama that is being a Stanton owner. Ok, so at best we are looking at year three, in which he will still be essentially a rookie, to compete with Kitna and whoever else. So, once again, the Lions will really know nothing about what they have going into camp next offseason, except a guy that seems to have some talent but can't make it through camp without getting injured. With the crop of QBs that are going to be available next year (could see at least 4 taken in the 1st round) and Detroit's likelihood of finishing with a top 15 pick, I think this might the nail in the coffin. If he was already the no. 2 it would be different cause he could come back and play some snaps in games that are over, but in order for him to see any gametime this year, he'll need Kitna and Orlovsky to go down.

I don't think this really affects his prospects much for this year. He wasn't going to get on the field until at least the second half of the season anyway, and we're getting to the point in the year where the first team will start to get the majority of the practice reps. If the Lions are out of it after 10 or so games, I think Stanton will still get a look. He should be healthy by then, and should have at least 6 weeks of practice under his belt by the time he'd have any real chance to start.

It's not an ideal situation, but I don't think it changes a whole lot.

I think you're right. In a way, this is almost a relief. That valuable roster spot he's been eating up is a little freer for us now. Every league is different, but in mine I'm now able to send him to the wire and feel confident he'll be there later this season if I have room to put him back on the squad.

he missed his sophomore season because John L. Smith is a freaking Idiot and had his star QB recruit playing special teams and covering kick offs in a crappy bowl game against Nebraska at the end of his freshman year - and he then blew out his knee in a pile up. his junior year he was knocked out of the Michigan game by a headhunting late hit that was both cheap and dirty which effed up his shoulder. The knee injury last year was likely a residual thing from the first one...and it was Martz who had him IR'd despite the fact that he would have been fine by mid season. But martz wanted JT Osuckivan (see SF) because he's Martz. But that's it as far as injuries. This was a freak thing and he's as tough as they come. even with the shoulder issue he gutted out a few games at the end of the year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't he have to actually move up the depth chart to get playing time later in the year? I thought if your QB2 was healthy he had to go in after the starter went down.

:boxing: This injury does not change a whole lot. There is no question if the Lions are out of it later in the year, Stanton would start before Orlovsky. Long-term, it does not change a thing.

That stinks, I'm going down to the game tomorrow and was looking forward to seeing Stanton play. He looked sharp in the 4th quarter last week versus Cinci.

Besides the fact we don't get to see him these last couple of preseason games, it's not that big of a deal. He hit his thumb on a helmet, it happens. He wasn't going to be playing to start the season off, by the time he'd be asked to come in and start, he'll be ready to go. Although you never want to hear anything wrong with a player, this one isn't that big of a deal long term.

Anyone else going down to the Lions game tomorrow?
