Dwayne Bowe, WR, Kansas City Chiefs (1 Viewer)

Think id rather pass and get someone like Nicks even later in the draft.
Nicks went well before Bowe in my draft. I went heavy on WRs in my draft and grabbed Bowe fairly late as my #3 WR (Andre & Calvin Johnson are my top 2) and then grabbed McCluster with one of my last picks. I love having Bowe as a WR3.
Im in that boat. Seem like an easy WR3 with upside of high WR2. Unless he gets injured he's a top 36 WR. How can he not be? He's the main target on an improving team.
No doubt, on a team that will pass a ton and his coaches have a history of churning out great offenses.

WR Dwayne Bowe has turned in the best preseason of his NFL career and has positioned himself for a good season. Bowe began training camp in shape and under his prescribed weight. He's been diligent in extra work on the practice field and as importantly, he has kept his mouth closed and not talked to the media. He caught seven passes for 65 yards and a touchdown in the first three games.
Coach Todd Haley reiterated Sunday that Bowe is having a very strong training camp and preseason, KCChiefs.com reports. Bowe had four catches for 32 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Eagles.

Recommendation: "He's doing all the things that are asked of him, he's working very hard, he's focused and I think that it's showing up and I think that the sky is the limit," Haley said. "There are good signs coming from Dwayne Bowe." Bowe has always had the talent, but his motivation has been questioned at times and he spent much of last year's preseason in Haley's doghouse, so it's refreshing to see the coach continue to praise him. He's going to get plenty of targets as the Chiefs' top receiver and should reemerge as a viable WR2 after a disappointing 2009 campaign.

Bowe at Larry Fitzgerald's WR camp
Dwayne Bowe went to Larry Fitzgerald's camp for NFL players this week. Former NFL stars Cris Carter and Michael Irvin were there to provide some "tough love" for Bowe (and the Chiefs knew he would be there).

This is a video with some of the players talking about what they were doing there. Bowe pops up briefly in the video. Looks like an intense practice.
Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe attended Larry Fitzgerald's summer camp for NFL players. Two of the men in attendance were once good receivers in their day -- Michael Irvin and Cris Carter.

Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports Bowe received some "tough love" from Irvin and Carter. Apparently, Bowe had taken nearly two weeks off of workouts and was overwhelmed by the conditioning aspect of all of it.

"Can you imagine your first day coming back to 14 100s?" Bowe told the Star-Tribune. "Man, it was like college again. I’ve never done this intensive competing, conditioning and technique in one day."

Apparently, the Chiefs knew Bowe would be here talking to Irvin and Carter.

"I don’t get mad about kids coming or not coming," Carter said. "Larry is the only one who invited me. Larry is the only one but some people in Kansas City as far as their administration kind of knew I was going to be here. We kind of let them know that I would be here for [receiver Dwayne] Bowe."

I take this as a good sign. If the Chiefs had given up Bowe, or thought he didn't have what it takes to be great, they wouldn't have bothered talking with Carter.
All of the signs seem to point to Bowe having a pretty good season. I think Bowe can certainly improve on his 2008 season where he had 157 targets, 86 receptions for 1,022 yards, and 7 TDs where he finished as WR16. With another season under Todd Haley, the emergence of Jamaal Charles, the arrival of Charlie Weiss, Thomas Jones, and Dexter McCluster, another receiving threat in Chris Chambers, a weak defense, and a favorable schedule the Chiefs have the makings of a "perfect storm" for alot of fantasy points in 2010.

85 receptions for 1,100 yards and 9 TDs.
:bag: I can't think of a more make or break player this year than Bowe. Last year, he was getting bad press from the beginning of training camp until the end of the year. I'm a firm believer that players can rebound and mature, and Bowe has the skills set to be an elite WR. It's just a matter of him staying focused and keeping his head on straight. I think he gets his act together this year and has a WR2 type of season. With the defense, this team will likely be in some shootouts and have to air it out. Some of the drafts I've seen he's gone into the 7th and 8th round. We shall see, but he defines the term "high risk/high reward" in 2010.

My projections:

75 catches - 1100 yards, 8 TDs

More positive ink on Bowe:

WR Dwayne Bowe had prepared for the upcoming season with the type of focus and work ethic that head coach Todd Haley has been seeking from his now fourth-year wide receiver. Haley wanted consistency and reliability for Bowe. "He understands," Haley said. "The message was clear to him what he had to do, and he came into the off-season exactly the way he was asked. He worked the way that good receivers, trying to become real good receivers, have to. Now he's continued through training camp to be a dependable player for us. He's made progress in all areas. He's becoming one of our more dependable players. That's good. That's what we want. That's what we ask of him."
Are those of you that are down on Bowe paying attention to the spin coming out of training camp and preseason? If you're ignoring it because you were burned last year I think you're making a mistake. His talent has never been in question. It's always been work ethic that has held this guy back. He seems to have rectified those issues.

I was waiting on the GM ahead of me to pick.. had my trigger finger on Crabtree, and right enough he picked him. So I had to fall back on Bowe instead.

It felt like if I landed Crabtree there my team would be very tough to beat. Hopefully Bowe can surprise people this year.

Never a big Bowe fan until this year. His upside is high, his floor is acceptable, and, from reports, his attitude is much, much better. A second year with his QB and I am expecting Bowe to exceed his ADP

Yes. Except I don't think it will be a mistake.

Much better to have bowe than crabtree.

Down on him because I drafted him last year. He would have to really fall for me to take a chance again.
I really don't understand think kind of post. Do you make projections? Because you should estimate the stats for all players and then rank them accordingly. You then draft each round based on which player available has the best projections, with some accounting for positions. It sounds like youre throwing projections away. You don't draft by how far he falls, you draft by whether he's a good value compared to your projections.

I got him in the 5th round yesterday, Chiefs schedule + coaching + other talent = 1100 8 tds, top 15. He will get more targets and outperform Colston and Jennings.

Weiss factor is huge imo, don't sleep on a guru, they always find a way

I don't understand this approach. Why ignore the signs and miss out on a potential breakout season because of a personal bias?
What signs have you seen? It IS personal bias but its also called a gut feeling. I had him a few years ago and he stunk then. His 1 catch for 13 yards yesterday doesn't seem to look like the start of a breakout season. I would rather draft someone else who also has breakout potential.

Did you read the thread? Did you watch the game?It was pouring rain, the Chiefs scored on two big plays, Cassel only threw the ball 22 times for 68 yards, and they were trying to work on the clock late in the game. That wasn't really the type of game you can judge a WR or passing game on. Bowe still led the team in targets, for what it's worth.I doubt KC will have the luxury of throwing the ball 22 times in too many games this season.

Seriously fellas, it's way too early to be souring on Bowe.
Bowe has talent, but Cassel just isn't that good. Now add that to the fact that it looks like KC wants to be a run early and often team, I don't see much upside here.
They were playing in terrible conditions for any WR, add the fact that he bruised his thigh on his first target and dropped two deep passes. The same game played in the sun could have seen him go 3-80-1 pretty easily. He has to cut down on the drops, first and foremost, but this dink and dunk Patriot clone system Weis thinks he can put together may work. I'm not going to judge any NFL offense after one game, maybe 5.#1 WRs almost notoriously have bad week 1's due to the other team being able to game plan for them for weeks in advance. Look at the top 20 WRs drafted and more than half played under their average stat line.KC is going to be a lot better than predicted on offense, Cassel really has nowhere to go but up. They need to open up the field if they plan on running so much so a great running game really doesn't do anything but give Bowe more opportunities. At this point I'm buying Dbowe from anyone looking to sell him. He will have a monster game before he has another one like this.

I just offered someone Darrick Mason for Dwayne Bowe straight up. Going into the last game, all he needed was 3 points from Dwayne Bowe to win...and he got 2.3.

I'm hoping he'll trade him in anger

I already have him, but considering his past my guess is that he could be had pretty easily from an unsuspecting owner.

Did Bowe win comeback player of the year yet?

:(

I came SO close to cutting him early in the season. I forget what free agent I was eyeing to replace Bowe with, but I decided to wait just one more week. That week he scored two TDs and took off from there...

I posted in almost all of these threads with predictions but didn't on Bowe because I honestly didn't have a strong feeling on this guy. I knew how much talent he had from his rookie season but I also heard all of the reports how he was lazy in practice etc....was in the dog house, how Chambers the year before outplayed him.

I really didn't know and it reflected in my drafting this year. I didn't have him on one team but when someone drafted him I never thought it was a wasted pick.

His stock is going to be very high next year so I'm skeptical in that but the guy is a great talent and a nose for the endzone. My guess is that his receptions and yardage may be close to the same but his TD total will go down some from the 2010-11 season next season.

There were 26 other times that a WR had 15 receiving TD in a season. Sterling Sharpe had 18 one year but then had to retire. Of the other 25, only Jerry Rice had more TD the following season (jumping from 15 in 1986 to 22 in 1987). The next highest total was 13.On average, the TD total fell from 16.5 to 9.5. Six players dropped to 4 TD or fewer. If you factor out the Rice uber season, the average dips to a shade under 9 TD.If what you say were to happen (similar numbers but say 9 TD), his ranking last year would have slipped from WR2 to T-WR8. However, I am equally concerned that his ypr last year was 3.3 yards higher than his career average over his first 3 seasons. He had 7 TD of 35+ yards last year including a 75 yarder. In his first 3 seasons, I believe he only had 5 plays of 35 yards (in 43 games). On a side note, I did not realize he was shutout against the Ravens in the playoffs. Including that game, Bowe has averaged 4.25 receptions a game with Cassel at QB. If we looked at the baseline for a 16-game season with all the Cassel games, we'd be looking at: 68-1001-11.If I were to guess at this point, I would think his receptions would be higher, his ypr would be lower, and his TD total would be lower, so maybe 80-1040-9. Last year, that would have ranked T-WR15.

 Great job of looking at the numbers and historical averages dispassionately to come up with a very reasonable projection.
