I'm sure Mayfield will win, but it's a bit of crap with these awards. No one disputes that the QB position is the most important in football by quite a bit. But if you're just going to give awards like Rookie of the Year, MVP, Heisman Trophy, etc to QBs by default, then just call them QB only awards. Mayfield had the 17th most passing yards, 11th most TDs and 5th most interceptions this year. He helped a pretty poor franchise win some more games. He had a pretty good year for a rookie QB and an average year for an experienced QB. Barkley had an incredible season, posting some historical statistics. Likely one of the best rookie seasons ever for a RB and a fantastic season for a RB of any experience level. Common sense would tell you he deserves the Rookie of the Year. But if you're just going to default the award to a QB that had a pretty good year, just call it the QB Rookie of the Year.
I'm actually not sure it's good for the sport that one position has become so much more important than the others. I don't think you see that in any other team sports. Striker in soccer may be the closest. But it's not like any pretty good pitcher is wining all the baseball awards over dominate fielding players. They have a separate award for a reason. Not sure there is too much you can do really. Maybe more "dual threat" offenses with QBs that are big and can run with decent but not great arms will eventually turn the tide. The hardest thing for QBs to do, IMO, is to be accurate. But if offenses move toward more "easy" throws based on the threat of a running QB, I think it will be easier to find athletes to fill those QB roles. That increase in supply might help lower the demand for the truly accurate thrower. I'm not holding my breath though.
Anyway, just my thoughts.
