..and they ranked the most advanced wide receiver prospect ever #2 in their WR rankings. Does anyone even proofread these?

Some things I see:

  • - The Bucs are looking hard for more OL help.
  • - The Rams want another RB
  • - The Cowboys are focusing on defense
  • - The Ravens know they need a LB
  • - The Browns and Jets need some big O linemen in the worst way

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Georgia QB Jake Fromm is a "favorite" among the league's quarterback coaches.

Assistant coaches are likely drawn to Fromm’s mental makeup and turnover-free gameplay despite his lacking arm strength and immobility (-39 rushing yards in his last two seasons) against SEC competition. A three-year starter who averaged 8.4 yards per attempt in his time with the Bulldogs, Fromm (6’2/219) is expected to draw interest ahead of Washington QB Jacob Eason at next week's draft.

These rankings are kind of bizarre to me. At least, they differ fairly dramatically (in several areas) from most everything I’ve read.

off top of my head, Justin Jefferson as WR 11 (I think)? Michael Pittman as WR 18? No Dobbins or Swift in top 100? (Unless I missed them).

eta Dobbins was 101 and Swift was like 146 ish. McFarland RB3 and Kenneth Murray as LB6 also struck me as odd.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller relays that one high-level scout believes that the notion of the Dolphins preferring Oregon QB Justin Herbert to Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa is a smokescreen.

"If you convince the football world you don't want Tagovailoa, it's less likely someone will jump ahead of you in the order to land him," Miller writes. "That's what this source believes the Dolphins are attempting to do." If it's a smokescreen, it's a mighty heavy one, as the evaluator later notes that a whopping 90% (estimated) of the talk around Miami's direction at No. 5 overall is trending in Herbert's direction. Just two more weeks until any and all smoke clears completely.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper predicted Justin Herbert will be picked by the Miami Dolphins with the fifth overall selection.

In his latest mock draft 4.0 Kiper adds fuel to the speculation that Miami has soured on Tua Tagovailoa and is instead turning their focus to the Oregon signal caller. Kiper's sentiments are echoed by NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah, who also predicted Herbert-to-Miami in his latest mock as well. It is rumored that the reason for the Dolphins souring on the Alabama QB is his injury history. Kiper says "Herbert doesn't have the durability concerns that have a few teams worried about Tua Tagovailoa's future. On my board, I have Tagovailoa higher, but this is about projecting what I believe teams will do." Expect to hear much more conjecture about Miami's pick as the draft approaches in two weeks.

In a poll of 17 NFL executives by The Athletic’s Bob McGinn, Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb edged out Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy as the top wide receiver prospect in the 2020 draft class.

McGinn has been conducting this series for 36 years now. He surely has ties to the inside. Execs were asked to rank the wideouts on a 1-through-6 scale, with first-place votes getting six points, second-place getting five, and so forth. Lamb accrued 87 points, and Jeudy came in at 86. While none of those polled view any of the 2020 wideouts in the same light as Calvin Johnson or Julio Jones, everyone considers it to be the deepest class in recent memory. As for Lamb, scouts are comparing him to Chad Johnson and Anquan Boldin. "You throw the ball up, he’s coming down with it," one scout said. "Just a competitive and strong guy," said another scout. "Almost a Boldin-type of receiver. I don’t think he’s a superstar. Lamb kind of maximizes what he has." Lamb (6’2/198) is our Hayden Winks’ No. 1-ranked wideout.

Shenault received eight of the 17 votes, Baylor’s Denzel Mims got four, and Clemson’s Tee Higgins received two to round out the top three in that poll. Shenault underwent core-muscle surgery in late February after the Combine, and with the COVID-19 pandemic, teams haven’t really been able to get their medical eyes on him. "Mental and injury," one scout replied when asked why Shenault was his choice to bust. "He’s always been the best guy on his team. You put him in one position and he’s just going to flounder. He’s head and shoulders in the bust factor above everyone else. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a big fall." Another scout compared Shenault to Cordarrelle Patterson in terms of his future NFL role. "Little bit immature but, my God, is he big and powerful," another scout said. "He’s a power guy, and those guys play."

CBS Sports' Josh Edwards passes along that Appalachian State RB Darrynton Evans has met virtually with at least 16 teams.

The Bills, Steelers, Cowboys and Chiefs are among the many teams Evans has met with on videoconference since the combine. While at the combine, Edwards notes, the 5-foot-10, 203-pound running back took formal meetings with both the Rams and the Colts. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah believes Evans could potentially be drafted as high as early in the third round. Per DJ, teams are falling in love with Evans' "speed and versatility."

I wish someone other than Daniel Jeremiah would speak so glowingly about Evans. I don't think it's intentional, but I'm wary his Appalachian State grad goggles are clouding his vision on this one.

 
So the WR is deep, but there are no top-flight guys at the top of it. I mean, how can you compare a guy that weighs 198 lbs. to Anquan Boldin? That makes no sense to me, unless you're counting on major devlopment with the weights, which might slow CeeDee down even further.

An NFL scout told The Athletic's Bob McGinn that it would be "foolish" to select a receiver in the teens on Day 1.

"You can get another wideout in the second or third, a Bryan Edwards, a Michael Pittman, a Lynn Bowden … it’s a real deep pool but it’s shallow at the top," the scout said, voicing the opinion that "[t]here’s nobody that’s super elite, height-weight-speed freakish (like) Julio, Calvin Johnson." While this particular scout would hold off on taking a receiver, Day 1 should see several wideouts off the board relatively early on. In his most recent mock draft, NFL.com's Bucky Brooks had four off the board in Round 1, including two -- CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy -- nipping at the top-10 (to the Jets at No. 11 and Raiders at No. 12, respectively).

Thanks, Faust. These are guys I hope to get in Round Two of the rookie draft I'm doing. It's deep, apparently, but not top-heavy.
