Dynasty and 2011 Lock Out (1 Viewer)

What rules are dynasty leagues putting in place in case of a hold out? For example, do you hold a draft in 2011 or not? If you do, how do you do the draft in 2012? Do you use the same draft order as 2011, giving some teams a huge advantage? Or do you use a random generator for 2012 draft? Or, do you hold off until 2012 for your draft and then use the 2011 draft order but include all the players drafted in 2011 and 2012?

Since the NFL draft will take place in 2011, my league decided that we would draft next year no matter what. If there isn't a fantasy season next year, we'll draw for draft order in 2012. We also added rule provisions that we would not play fantasy football with replacement players and that in the event of a shortened NFL season we have an emergency league meeting to determine fantasy schedule. If there isn't an NFL season next year we also decided not to charge league fees for the year.

If the 2011 season gets canceled, I'm toying with the idea of of holding a special draft where instead of drafting players, everyone drafts draft picks. Put every draft pick in 2011 and 2012 into the pool and then people draft which picks they want. I figure it's better than assigning picks in 2012 randomly, and also better than screwing the good teams in 2010 by having them pick late twice in a row.

I'd imagine what it would wind up looking like would be the top pick going with 2011 1.01, the second pick going 2012 1.01, the third pick going 2011 1.02, the fourth pick going 2012 1.02, the fifth pick going 2011 1.03, and so on down the line, although this way everyone has the option to try something else if they feel like it.

Nothing really set up at all. I think our league would just sit out, not draft anybody at all, and just have an expanded rookie draft with a random order the next year, seeing as how alot of players dynamic could change within that year. (Age, Team, Contracts, ect)

What do you all think about this idea?

Go ahead and draft for 2011. For the 2012 Draft order, have everyone in the league rank all teams (not including their own). Take the averages of those vote's as the "result" of the 2011 season, then set the 2012 draft in the reverse order, just like you normally would?

Here's what we're doing in one league that spent a lot of time thinking/talking/voting on the best solution...

- Hold the rookie draft in 2011 based on 2010 standings

- Roll dice to get the draft order for the 2012 rookie draft (weighted dice based on 2010 standings - best rolls = higher picks).

- If season starts with a lockout and an agreement is subsequently reached, we go all play for remainder of the season.

- If replacement players are used we don't play FF.

It looks like our 2011 draft will be the same

2012 will be bidding for picks. Everyone gets equal dollars. We have a 6 round draft for 96 picks. Will probably do till 3rd and than 4th and 5th will be combined and everyone gets 2 but you bid for spot 1, 2, 3 etc. So if you bid all your money for the 1.1 than that is the only pick you will have. If your a team with lots of needs than having 9 or 10 picks might be the wise way since we are IDP.

as long as the NFL has its rookie draft in April my 3 leagues will still have our rookie drafts in June

Are we really this worried about something that MIGHT affect us in 1 1/2 years?
First off, it would be a year almost exactly - actually, earlier given that drafts are held before the start of the season. In some dynasty leagues the draft is fairly close to the NFL draft in April - so that would be about 7-8 months away...not 18. Secondly, given the ferocity of the vitriol on both sides, it looks as thow that "might" is at least a 50/50 proposition - if not more so. I don't see why discussing possible solutions before fantasy teams affected by the situation too much are emotionally involved (or at least seem to have a vested interest in seeing drafts/leagues take a certain course of action) would be a bad idea.

Fair and strong commissioners and owners who keep the league and not their own team in mind when making decisions will be the key.

Even if the NFL has it's rookie draft, if there is a lockout players may opt to stay in school, thus making what should have been a strong 2011 class weaker and make the 2012 draft very strong. So, all of you going after 2011 picks may need to rethink that strategy and consider that 2012 may be the picks to go after instead. I'm pretty sure that most leagues will have a 2011 draft as long as the NFL has one and they should. That draft may not be as good as you think it will be however
