Wasn't McGowan banged up (ankle)? How did Payne look? I'm considering upping a bid on McGowan in one league, because it sounded like his job was safe... would love to hear more on this beyond the injury with Brandon, because he's reportedly looked great so far.keep an eye out for Kevin Payne in Chicago. McGowan is in the last year of his contract and has an injury history. Payne is a big hitter who Lovie Smith apparently loved coming out of college and the Bears gave him 1st team reps against the 49ers even though McGowan started.

By Larry Mayer
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – It certainly hasn’t been publicized like the quarterback derby, but two young Bears players are involved in an intense competition for a starting position on defense.
After replacing injured starter Brandon McGowan at strong safety last Saturday night in Seattle, Kevin Payne is continuing to push McGowan for the right to line up alongside Mike Brown.
“Brandon McGowan is our starter, has been our starter,” said coach Lovie Smith. “He’s played well at times. He’s played like the rest of our defense has at other times. Missing that game last week threw him back a little bit.
“And then we have Kevin Payne, who’s made a lot of progress, who’s a good football player, who brings a certain attitude to the defense. I like what he’s been able to do, even though he’s a young player who needs more experience. I think in time he’ll be a pretty good safety.”
While McGowan started Thursday night against the 49ers, Payne rotated in with the first team and broke up a long pass intended for tight end Vernon Davis midway through the third quarter.
“That was the plan, to let both guys play,” Smith said. “We’re still in the training camp mode right now. To me, you don’t expect to have your team game-ready for the Colts at this point of the season. You would like to have your best showing the third preseason game, but there’s still time. So you work a lot of different combinations, which we’ve done.
“The safety position is one that was up for grabs coming in [to training camp]. Brandon played there last year. We had a lot of guys who played there last year. But just like at defensive end and other positions, we think there are a couple guys who could possibly really help us this year. You want to get them a look, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”

BEARS IN BRIEF
August 23, 2008
BY BRAD BIGGS bbiggs@suntimes.com
The question marks for the starting lineup remain on the offensive side of the ball, but the Bears still will consider different combinations on defense.
Such was the case Thursday night against San Francisco when Brandon McGowan started at strong safety, then rotated each series with Kevin Payne, the fifth-round pick from 2007 who missed the bulk of his rookie season with a broken arm. Payne played in McGowan's place last week at Seattle when the incumbent was out with a sprained right ankle, and the coaches wanted to see more of him.
Getting Payne acclimated in a hurry only makes sense. If he's not the hardest hitter on defense, he's bone-rattling close, and McGowan and Mike Brown have lengthy injury histories. Not only that: Both veterans will be out of a contract after the season. And Smith was adamant the Bears draft Payne when he was coming out of Louisiana-Monroe.
''It doesn't surprise me that they wanted to see me more because that is what I am here for,'' Payne said. ''To compete and play. That is what we do. I push him. He pushes me. I hope they have a lot of faith in me.''

Smith wants Bears fighting for positions
By Vaughn McClure | Chicago Tribune reporter
August 23, 2008
Bears coach Lovie Smith vowed to make the next few practices more like training camp, with his players competing for positions. It that's the case, it could set off a fierce battle at strong safety between Brandon McGowan and Kevin Payne heading into the regular season.
McGowan, set to be the starter after finishing in that role last season, alternated series with Payne during Thursday's 37-30 exhibition loss to San Francisco. He was informed of the rotation plan before the game.
"I don't know if [that will continue], but hopefully it won't," McGowan said. "Was I disappointed? Nah. They told me it wasn't because I was doing something wrong. It was just about splitting a little time."
It was hard to evaluate how each player performed because of how poorly the defense played as a whole. The Bears yielded 425 yards, and the 49ers scored the most points they have in an exhibition since 1989, Joe Montana's last championship season.
Missed tackles and mental mistakes irritated Smith, but he still won't allow tackling in practice. McGowan was credited with five tackles and made a key stop on a third-and-5 play, but he also whiffed on an early attempt to slow running back Frank Gore.
"Just too many mistakes," McGowan said.
Payne, who forced a fumble Sept. 16 in Seattle, helped teammate Danieal Manning on Thursday by recovering Manning's fumble off a kickoff. Payne was steady on defense but not spectacular.
"I love stepping up and making plays when I get a chance," Payne said. "Brandon and I, we both want to be the best at what we do."
Both players have had some injury setbacks this preseason. McGowan missed the game in Seattle with an ankle injury. Payne started but left the game with back spasms. He also hyperextended his knee in the exhibition opener against Kansas City.
"Brandon McGowan is our starter, has been our starter," Smith said. "He has played well at times. He has played like the rest of our defense has at other times. Missing that game last week, of course, threw him back a little bit.
"Payne has made a lot of progress. He brings a certain attitude to the defense. I like what he has been able to do, even though he's a young player who needs more experience. In time, he'll be a pretty good safety."
He is definitely a sleeper. But isn't Keiho plugged in on the lucrative weekside?I like session, but I just don't see him doing anything from the strong side.not sure if he is a deep sleeper, but clint session of IND is intriguing...
Hmm, thanks. Interesting to watch because McGowan was on a lot of people's sleeper lists, shooting up the boards now though... Will definitely keep an eye on Payne. Here are a few stories that came out this week, all basically saying the same thing with a few minor details added in each:Wasn't McGowan banged up (ankle)? Are you still high on Waters? KehlBladesP.ThomasAnthony Waters.
Good question. I am high on his talent, but it's concerning that he was inactive in week 1. I really don't know how much longer I can have this attitude about him. At some point, he has to show something. I have him on a couple of teams and I'm holding for a little longer.Kehl looked good and I am liking him more every time I see him play.I was never much of a Blades fan, but I've been wrong before. Pat Thomas is a replacement level talent and in my opinion is good in the short term only.buck56 said:Are you still high on Waters? KehlBladesP.ThomasAnthony Waters.
Thanks for your response, i am also high on Kehl i'm taking him tonight with my waiver pick. Already have Dizon, B.Bell,& Adibi from this years draft. Hopefully 2 of them will pan out?Good question. Blades played a surprising number of defensive snaps last week. It's coming out that Marcus Washington is still experiencing hip problems, and Rocky still doesn't look like he's fully recovered from his knee, so Blades may rotate in more than we expected.I was never much of a Blades fan, but I've been wrong before.buck56 said:Are you still high on Waters? Are you talking about college? Considering that he wasn't drafted high in the NFL and was used as a back all last season, I'd have to assume that you weren't a fan of Blades in college. Though, I'm not sure why anyone would not like the guy in college as he was one of the most productive LB'ers in college at that time. Maybe you aren't a fan of his situation? I can understand it, if that was the case. Then again, he was a low investment since he was a late pick and not projected to be a starter or impact player. As Redman has pointed out, he being used surprisingly much more than originally thought. So, that waht makes him one to keep an eye on or sleeper to stash in dynasty....that's all.Matter of fact, I'd say Blased has better value than Thomas at this point. Playing in a 14 team FULL IDP dynasty league for 10 yrs, Blades is rostered and Thomas is sitting on WW. FYI - The Blades is not a Redskins homer and actually can't stand the 'Skins.Good question. Generally, anytime I say I "was never a fan", it does not refer to college, rather, it refers to how I see his talent projecting to the NFL. Hope that clears up the statement I made. I don't see Blades being a fantasy factor in the long-term. Like I said, it's just my opinion and I've been wrong before. Stewart Bradley is one player that looks to be proving me wrong, although it is too early to know for sure. Are you talking about college? If you are in deeper leagues like the one you mention, you should have a young player rostered if you like them. Even though I'm not high on Blades, I still would rather have him than Thomas, as is true in your league. It rarely hurts to roster some sleepers (such as Blades) and hope one pans out every now and then. It beats rostering some scrub who will never make an impact.
I don't think Waters started at all this last week - at least he didn't have any points. MFL lists a - vs 0.00. I'm assuming he didn't play. Do you still think he has some value? This year - next year?any homers out there with any information - is he practicing at all? Is he practicing with the second string? I've had him myself and still do on a few rosters and beginning to think he is just taking up space.Anthony Waters.
Waters was, apparently, a semi-healthy scratch last week. Hebert is a special teams demon. The Bengals also have Herana-Daze Jones and Corey Lynch available. Jones and Hebert are close, Lynch is more of a FS type. It's a matter of Ndukwe not being in condition yet to take 60 snaps. Hebert is no threat to the safety rotation in the long term.engals Secondary Banged Up
Mark Curnutte, Cincinnati Enquirer -
The Cincinnati Bengals appear as though they will have cornerback David Jones (concussion) back for the game Sunday against Tennessee. He was in uniform and on the field for the start of practice this morning (Friday). Cornerback Johnathan Joseph, limited because of a hamstring injury, was on the field, too. Starting strong safety Dexter Jackson is not here. He has been out all week with a thumb injury, and it appears he will not play against the Titans. Safety Herana-Daze Jones (hamstring) also is out today. He is not expected to play Sunday. In addition to Marvin White, who will start at free safety, the Bengals are expected to go with Kyries Hebertand Chinedum Ndukwe at strong safety.
Who is Hebert?
I've never heard of him. Can you tell us more?Gary Guyton

The competition between Siler and Waters to play LB has been close, but I think Waters is, or at least was ahead. The competition for a game day uniform has been decided by special teams play and after Osgood, Siler is the best the Chargers have. My gut tells me that Siler has more room for improvement and Waters long term prospects are getting thin.Jene Bramel said:Waters was, apparently, a semi-healthy scratch last week.
