Guessing your league does not have contracts for each player...

Either:

Never Add more Roster spots

or

Allow owners to add certain # of Rookies over the Limit for a brief time period before making a cut-down day

End of thread

Great question. I play in dynasty leagues that use both of the methods you described. Play in several online leagues that have 20 man rosters and require a "drop" to make room for a rookie draft pick. The dropped players are then held as unavailable until the next full round begins, then they can be picked up as free agents (intead of drafting a rookie). Also play in a league with a 30 man roster limit where the limit is not applied between the rookie draft and the cut down day (one week before Week 1 kickoff). This approach allows teams the entire preseason to evaluate their acquisitions before making their roster cuts, and the players dropped are then made available following Week 1 play on whatever waiver wire system you use (which seems a pretty equitable way to disperse whatever talent has been dropped by the teams with solid depth before the draft). This approach can be a bit inequitable in that teams that acquire additional draft picks actually get to roster more players during preseason than those that trade away draft picks.

Personally, I find it difficult to establish my relative valuation between rookies and veterans in the first method I described, especially when some decisions have to be made before NFL camps have opened. With 20 man rosters, I usually drop my kicker and defense to make room for additional rookie skill position players in the early part of the draft. Since the later part of the draft is in August, I get a chance to gather camp information on my rookie draftees - then in the last few picks, I'm able to decide whether to release a rookie or a veteran in order to pick up my kicker and my defense.

Good luck with your decision . . .
