Dynasty Leagues (1 Viewer)

Domination

What is the best format for using in a initail draft? Some like the slow draft, but then you have to start early and are unsure of certain players statuses or injuries. Others try to get it done all at once, but that will make for one very long day if you draft 40+ players.

What is the best way to go about an inital draft for a dynasty league???

TIA

The best way is an auction, quite honestly - as everyone gets a fair shot at everyone. While it can feel cumbersome to set up, think of it this way. A Dynasty league that could (and should) be around for >>1 year will only ever have one initial draft. That's it.So - to be fair to all - allowing everyone to bid on every player and determine how to spend their money to build their own style of franchise is the best way to go.Now, orchestration of the auction is a different question altogether.

It depends on everyone's schedule. Ideally a live draft is great but not everyone is free at the same time for a couple of hours to do one and if someone is supposed to show up but doesn't then that ruins the draft for everyone. Both of my dynasty league drafts were a slow draft with a 24 hour time limit, that way a person could make their pick whenever was convient for them but of course using you pre-draft cards to make your picks were highly encouraged. It takes longer but if you have good owners you can get through a couple of rounds each day

completely agreed, auction is the way to go.

But, if you do a draft, I'll tell you what we did a couple years ago. It's somewhat cumbersome, but I liked it.

We held a 30 round initial draft for an IDP league, in 6 phases. 5 rounds each. The odd # phases were live. Every other Saturday, we got together in person if available, if not, those unavailable either traded their picks (2 guys traded entirely out of a phase, one did it twice), sent proxy picks (only 1 guy did this, I don't suggest it), or were online (best idea). The even #s were done via email over the course of 2 weeks each.

We started in early April, ended a couple weeks after the NFL draft. Rookies were available at any time throughout the draft. We had gotten through 15 rounds before the draft, most of the big time rookies were taken, but some of the rookies became great values in round 16 - which worked out alright, as the serpentine draft made the guys with late 1sts get some value. These were mostly IDPs and lower WRs, so mostly not the guys that will make or break a team, but this was 2002 and one guy got Portis, others got Randle El, Bryant, and Westbrook (he would have slid anyway).

It was interesting and we enjoyed it. you may choose to do things differently with the NFL draft, but I like the phasing.

the best way is to make a party of it imo. who cares if it takes all day, its the only real long draft you will have anyways. just set the date MONTHS in advance and make sure everyone is clear when it is.

I always think online drafts are :goodposting:
