[DYNASTY] Rookie Drafts (1 Viewer)

IM ON THE CLOCK - WHO DO I PICK??? Look below at my team - I dont think i need a WR.

Round 1

1.01 Seattle Seahawks - Ronnie Brown, RB Miami

1.02 Miami Dolphins - Cedric Benson, RB Chicago

1.03 New England Patriots - Cadillac Williams, RB Tampa Bay

1.04 New England Patriots - JJ Arrington, RB Arizona

1.05 Oakland Raiders - Braylon Edwards, WR Cleveland

1.06 San Diego Chargers - Mike Williams, WR Detroit

1.07 Atlanta Falcons - Frank Gore, RB San Francisco

1.08 Chicago Bears - Troy Williamson, WR Minnesota

*1.09 Buffalo Bills - pick timed out, moved to end of round one

1.10 Oakland Raiders - E Shelton, RB Carolina

1.11 Minnesota Vikings - A Smith, QB SF

1.12 Detroit Lions - M Clayton, WR Bal

*1.13 Buffalo Bills - A Rodgers, QB GB

Round 2

2.01 Seattle Seahawks - R Brown, WR Philly

2.02 St. Louis Rams (from Dolphins) - C Fason, RB Minn

2.03 New England Patriots - B Jacobs, RB NYG

2.04 Chicago Bears - D Johnson, LB KC

2.05 Oakland Raiders - R Moats, RB Philly

2.06 San Diego Chargers - V Morency, RB Houston

2.07 Atlanta Falcons - R White, WR ATL

2.08 St. Louis Rams - H Miller, TE Pitt

2.09 SAN DIEGO SUPERCHARGERS (FROM Buffalo Bills) -

2.10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers -

2.11 Minnesota Vikings -

2.12 Detroit Lions -

My team:

QB - D Culpeper, D Carr

RB - LT2, R Johnson, D Foster, C Perry, C Cobbs, A Smith, Moe Williams, V Morency

WR - Rod Smith, Jimmy Smith, S Moss, TJ Housmanzetah, Mike Williams, M Robinson, D Thompson, D Hamilton, S Parker,

TE - Heap, Wiggins, Franks
A certain Jacksonville WR, who has gone as high as 1.07 in some drafts, appears to still be on the board. I don't usually like selecting rookie WRs. In fact, I loathe it. But considering he's every bit as (if not more) tlaented then two guys selected before him and the only RBs available are crapshoots, I'd take the tall white kid from Arkansas. Jason Campbell is left, and you could stand some depth at QB, but you can address that with Frye or Orton down the line if needed.Colin
I have Simms at QB but his latest news isnt so good. I am in a toss up of Pearman and Jones at this point.

You're referring to 4th round pick Alvin Pearman who has neither size nor speed and is well suited to be a 3rd down back while Greg Jones carries the rock in the event that Fred Taylor is hurt and the Jaguars don't bring anyone else in? As opposed to a 6'6 WR that runs a sub 4.4 forty and by all accounts, will get on the field early and often?

Interesting toss up. ;)

Just trying to guage peoples thoughts - thank you much

Zealots 2 (im the Bills) Funny thing happened, after my 3.3 pick, i said after much debate, i settled for Frye. I was between him and 3 other guys there, i got all 3 other guys with my 4.3, 5.3 and 6.3 picks :D

6.03 63 Buffalo Bills Smith, Alex TBB TE Tue May 10 7:58:02 p.m. ET 2005 wow, suprised he made it this far, i almost drafted him 3 rounds ago.
thats just ridiculous. i honestly think smith is going to be a better fantasy TE than heath miller. gruden is just licking his chops at finally being able to open up the middle in the passing game.
Yeah, i had Smith and Miller ranked very close going into my rookie drafts.

Colin,Why Caddy? Not bashing the pick, just curious why you took him instead of the others. I think I remember you saying you traded up for the 1.04 before the draft. Good job.

Good pick at 1.01. I nabbed Caddy at 1.02 in Z18 and Z30. I would've taken him at #1. My feeling is that he lacks elite upside, but that he'll consistently be a top 15 back. He's Curtis Martin version 2.0 if you ask me.

I traded Andre Johnson and Kelley Washington for the 1.04 and 2.04 betting that a fourth RB would end up in a "prime" situation. It appears that the bet was a good one as Arrington has a chance to start from the outset in Arizona. I selected Caddy because I, unlike EBF, think he is the only back in the draft with the chance to be ridiculously good. I think Benson will be solid, and Brown SHOULD be okay (although I had him 3rd). I've said that the only thing that could keep WIlliams from being a stud is Jon Gruden.

THe comparison I like to make for Caddy is not one I've seen in other places, but thats okay; he reminds me of Edgerrin James.  I think he has the same footwork/balance/vision combo that has made James successful and he's just fast enough to be a HR threat from anywhere on the field. Twice, maybe three times a season does a RB get in a flat footrace wtih the defense. The "Breakaway speed" thing is overrated in my opinion. Most of the time, big plays are the result of breaking through the front 7 (which usually comes from quickness/footwork/balance) and angles (which are a bit tougher to control). I moved Williams to 1a with Benson 1b when I saw him do the following...

4th and 1 in the SEC title game against the Vols. Williams takes the ball and gets hit at the line, where he stays on his feet. Kevin Burnett (IIRC) wraps up his left leg. Caddy stays up and "ole!"s the next Vol defender, spins 90 degrees, escapes Burnett's grasp and gets 3 yards for the first down. BEST RUN I saw all year, seriously.

He took sole possession of RB1 on my board when he chose to participate in the senior bowl and made the selection a "no brainer" when he showed previously unseen pass-catching ability at Senior Bowl practice.

Thanks Colin, as usual, a thought out and interesting analysis. I may not always agree (such as your dislike for Carr :P ) but you always backup your stuff with compelling arguments.I currently have the 1.02 in an upcoming Rookie Draft and figure I will be choosing between Benson or Williams. I like Caddy the best, but I already have Michael Clayton and Griese/Simms on my team, so I am not sure I want to be so dependent on Gruden! :X

Would you have taken Barber that high if you did not have JJ on your team? I'm unsure of your WR's, but would that have been a possibility for you there?

Colin's Rules for Dynasty:1. In the first year, position yourself to be solid/strong YEar 2 and beyond. Year 1 is a crapshoot and overpaying for players will cripple you forever.

2. Horde running backs almost to a fault.

3. Rely on proven, veteran WRs.

4. Don't get greedy at QB.

My WRs are Roy Williams, Plaxico, Terrell, T.Taylor, Galloway, Toomer, and some other maringal prospects. NOt fantastic, but infinitely usable and functional for the purposes at hand. Would my team be much better if I'd grabbed Matt Jones?

I wanted Fason, but Barber is fine with me. Having Jones makes it even better. Here are the write-ups I did for the league...

Pick 2.03

Tennessee Titans selected Moats, Ryan PHI RB

Despite 2 first round QBs and 2 first round WRs still being on the board, I'll take this 3rd round RB. Why? Well, RBs usually show some production (if they're ever going to) about a year or 2 ahead of WRs and QBs. I'll let the rest of you wait on those guys. 2nd, Moats is going to a situatin where the Coach has shown he's more than happy to use multiple backs and the current starter is in a contract dispute. Despite talks that Travis Henry (who I also own) could end up in Philly, they still spent a reasonably high pick on Moats, who is slight in build but was very productive in college against some solid Defenses. 20 carry a game guy? Doubtful. Change of pace guy getting 5-8 touches a game? Surely. I bet that by 2006, he's settled in somewhere in the middle, making him a reasonable spot-starter for me. Regardless, like you should never pass on a 7 footer in the NBA draft, you also should pass on talented runners in football drafts, regardless of situation...

Pick 2.04

Tennessee Titans selected Barber, Marion DAL RB

...which brings us to Barber. WHile he's going to a situation where he'll have to perform very well just to be the #2 guy, his talent is undeniable. He's got great measurables and was very productive in a tough conference. Does that make him the next LT2? Of course not. However, he's a talented guy that was ranked no worse than RB6 on any predraft board that I saw. As such, I'll take the bet that somewhere down the line, a guy with sub 4.5 speed, good size, and on-field production will get a chance to make an impact. The fact that I have Julius Jones also made this an easy selection.

I too am a RB hoard, but am trying to be a bit more careful after taking Greg Jones 1 spot ahead of Michael Clayton last year. :wall:

Added Courteney Roby at 6.01, my last pick in the draft.I'm not all that happy about having drafted 2 WRs that will need some time to blossom. However, ending the day with 1 defensive difference maker, 4 RBs including 2 from the top 4, 2 first day WRs, and a high-upside QB, I feel alright about it.COlin

At least your WR projects were a 4th and 6th - some other owners spent 1st/2nds on Jones, Williamson, and White - and they wont be productive before bradley and roby are. I think they are the 3 most overrated players in dynasty rookie drafts this year.

I'm going to disagree with you. I definitely advocate drafting the best talent available. Let's not forget that all of those guys were drafted higher than Arrington, Moats, Morency, Gore, Shelton, etc. I understand the value of RBs in Zealots leagues, but it's hard to fault someone for going with a first round talent. Sure, the player may not give you much for a year or two, but looking for immediate impact from your non-top 3 rookie picks is a quick path to disappointment and maybe even disaster.

Jones was a reach at 21, so im not swayed by his draft position. White and Williamson are nice talents, but honestly i think the NFL has a size/speed fetish for WR right now, and GMs are willing to overlook flaws in a WR game if he has the size/speed combo that *could* produce the next moss/TO... if i am going WR in the 1st or 2nd round of my rookie draft, i want a guy that already has a complete WR game foundation to build from (edwards/williams/clayton/brown) over a project.

I'm not all that happy about having drafted 2 WRs that will need some time to blossom.  However, ending the day with 1 defensive difference maker, 4 RBs including 2 from the top 4, 2 first day WRs, and a high-upside QB, I feel alright about it.

COlin
That's fine, but odds are odds. It's impossible to know with certainty how a given player will do, but history says first round picks are better bets to develop into good players than are third round picks. You may hit the jackpot once or twice on the late round RBs, but your more likely to get a good player with a first round WR.

Now my interest is peaked and I;m going to do a bit of research on the average production/career of 1st round WRs compared to latter round guys.EBF, i thought I'd have gotten a  from you for grabbing Cadddy 1.01 and McPherson in the 3rd... ;)

EBF, i thought I'd have gotten a  from you for grabbing Cadddy 1.01 and McPherson in the 3rd... ;)
Those are definitely solid picks. I grabbed McPherson in both of my Z drafts. I think he's an excellent pick where he's going. A good QB is pretty critical in Zealots. While I won't go as far as guaranteeing success for McPherson, I do feel that his odds of becoming a stud QB are probably tops in this class. I have Aaron Rodgers rated slightly higher, but he's a lower risk/lower reward type.Anyhow, those players should help you out. I think Cadillac is going to be very solid. I also think you got pretty good value on the WR picks. WRs don't score that big in Zealots, but you got some bargains. Those guys aren't locks, but they made sense where you took them.

My Z30 draft is still in progress, but I'm all done with my picks in Z18. This is the haul:

1.02 - Carnell Williams

1.08 - Ryan Moats

3.02 - Adrian McPherson

4.02 - Channing Crowder

5.02 - Kirk Morrison

6.02 - Justin Tuck

Moats at 1.08 was a very tough pill to swallow. I'm an advocate of drafting the best player available, but in this case I decided to gamble against the odds. I have Chad Johnson, Andre Johnson, Roy Williams, and a few other decent guys at WR. I'm much thinner at RB and I felt that my needs dictated a bit of a reach. I've identified Moats as the best of the second tier RBs. He's not a sure thing, but hopefully he'll work out for me.

I'm much happier with the rest of my picks in this league. I think Crowder was a steal and I'm high on Morrison. I like McPherson a lot and Tuck gives me a decent developmental guy at DE. I had a bad draft in this league last year, but I think this crop is going to yield some big time contributors. I was also able to pick up Lance Mitchell and Jordan Beck off waivers for the minimum of $50 each.

My Z30 draft thus far:

1.02 - Cadillac Williams

2.11 - Chris Henry

3.02 - Adrian McPherson

4.11 -

5.02 -

6.11 -

So far it's been an easy decision at each of my picks. Thse guys were all the top players left on my board when my pick was up. I have a much stronger team in Z30 than in Z18, meaning I had the ability to sit back and select for value. I was happy to get Henry where I did. I like him a lot as a long term project.

Looks like a normal draft to me so far. Things seem to have gone just like they have in most other drafts except I think that Vincent Jackson went a bit high. He should have waited until his 2.03 or possibly his 2.12 to pick him. He could have gotten Alex Smith instead of Charlie Frye if he would have waited.
