Dynasty Startup (1 Viewer)

I have the second pick in a dynasty startup (actually an Empire league, but I digress).

My head tells me to take Odell or Hopkins, but in mocks I have done, the team seems better taking Gurley.

Advice? I know mocks aren’t always accurate.

10 team ppr

1qb

2 rb

3 wr

1 te

1 flex

I'd go RB. Gurley, Elliott and maybe even consider Barkley. You can still get excellent WR's at the turn between the 2nd/3rd. It'll be a lot tougher to do that with RB's.

All of those top end guys are very similar.  This is a dynasty league where you should have this guy for 3 or 4 years at a minimum.  Take the player you like best because that will give you more enjoyment rooting for a player you like over what a "mock" plays out.

My bigger concern would be why the format is a draft for a dynasty start up.  That really screws people based on the luck of the draw.  If I am doing a dynasty I want to opportunity to get the player I like most.  A draft prevents that for almost everyone involved.  Even if you don't want to do an auction for the entire draft it should be done for at least 3-5 players so every team has a chance at every player.  Transition to draft after that initial auction part.  I have done leagues like that and it works really well.

What picks would you consider getting screwed?

Any pick that wouldn't allow me to get the guy I want to build around in a dynasty format.  The point of a dynasty is to design your team the way you want and keep it year to year developing it how you see fit.  Part of that is being able to get your favorite player and build around him.  If your favorite player is Beckham and you have pick 6 there is a good chance you have zero opportunity to draft him all because you drew a #6 out of a hat.  That sucks.

The only fair way for a dynasty start up is to do it via auction in some manor so every team has an equal opportunity to get any player.  It is not reliant on pulling a number out of a hat.

I get your point, but no one has complained. With several owners being "off site" for the draft, an auction gets to be a pain. Either way, the "fairness" or lack thereof is equal for everyone going in.

The "fairness" is equal in that everyone can lucky and pick the #1 out of the hat.  However it not where I want to start a dynasty league.  Sure it is "fair' because nobody has an inherent advantage but the purpose of doing a dynasty league is to build a team that you keep every year.  Not having a chance at someone to build around simply because you  drew X out of a hat really impacts the dynasty aspect for me.

I understand the logistics issue but you are starting a team that you are keeping for many years.  The startup is a key to that team.  I would make arrangements or suggestions to at least auction the first 5 players/$100 or something like that.  I have done these types of drafts and they work really well.

When we did the startup for my full IDP league we auctioned 15 players/$250 cap and then started a draft to fill out the remaining 25 rounds of the 40 player roster.  The draft order (snake draft after the auction) was set by salary cap space left after acquiring their 15 auction players.  Team with the most money left got first pick.  It added an additional level of strategy for the auction as some wanted the first pick in the draft because of the salary structure we set up.  That was almost 15 years ago and the league is still going strong.

I would take the extra time to incorporate this if at all possible.  It will make the start of the league much better for everyone (even if they don't realize it yet).

Gurley, Zeke, or Barkley or trade back. Start 2 rb league, I always like having a stud when I have to start 2.

I see Gurley as the top player in dynasty. Last year he outscored Hopkins by 75 points, which is a pretty big gap to overcome. Projections for this year have the gap closer to 50 pts, which is still big. And he's 2 years younger than Hopkins/Beckham, so the WRs don't even have much of a longevity edge.
