A common thought amoungst dynasty leaguers is "talent over situation" - I tend to agree. But to what extent are these two close in talent (in terms of FF production) enough to take a closer look at the situational aspects?

Also, some have stated that Crabtree is better due to the fact that he is virtually the only good WR on the 49ers (and Dez has too much competetion for catches) - but to what extent is Dez's simply being in a better overall offense outweigh that - or at least having a better QB?

I guess the poll is "Who would you rather have from a dynasty FF perspective?"

The follow up disussion is twofold:

1) Who is more "talented"?

2) Who has the better situation - both now and long term?

I think they both have equal talent. Dez has a better QB situation right now, but I am going to vote based solely on what we know right now.

Crabtree has played in 12 games, missed all OTA's and training camps, yet he still looked pretty darn good.

Based on that we can assume he is not going to be a complete bust. There is no way anyone can say the same about Bryant right now.

Good question. On talent they are fairly similar. Dez might have better measurables, but Crab is arguably more polished and skilled. I'd call it a push on talent. Clearly, Dallas is far ahead of SF in terms of qb play and passing proficiency. Long term, that would seem to favor Dez. However, Miles Austin emerged as a very good wr last year, meaning even once Dez develops in 2 or 3 years he could be the #3 option behind Austin and Witten. Crab appears likely to soon be the #1 or at least #2 option (Vernon Davis) in SF. So even in a less prolific passing offense, he should be targeted relatively often. All things considered, I'd have to choose Crabtree given the likelihood that he is probably the better this upcoming season, and that the long term prospects for Dez are far from "sure thing" territory. Of course, I'm also a 49er fan, so that might influence me some.

2007 was the first year that Michael Crabtree ever played Wide Receiver, he was a Quarterback in High School. Once he learns the position of WR he should be unstoppable. Times change and situations change, Alex Smith will either make Crabtree a star and be a good QB or he will be gone from SF so Crabtree will be a great dynasty WR, in a redraft if Smith stinks it up then Crabtree could suffer a bit this year and then Smith will be gone. I'll take the guy who played 2 years of WR prior to skipping camp and 5 games and then lighting it up at the highest level of competition and is still learning the position.

Below is a 3 page thread comparing these 2.

Crabtree vs. Dez thread
I realize that that thread exsisted (indeed, I posted in it myself). That particular thread died out over a month ago and was limited to a discussion of each players "upside". While this may seem like splitting hairs, I wanted it to be more of a "who would you prefer to have on your dynasty roster" question (one is a talent-specific question, the other is broader with more of a FF production aspect, but certainly takes the former into account).Plus, this post includes a poll - imho, that helps take the subjective and make it a little more quantitative (or at least give some insight as to whether those that prefer one over the other are a verbose minority or if it is as evenly split as I suspect).

To this point it seems to be a dead heat, which one can suggest may indicate their values are relatively even, and it's simply a matter of preference.

I think this is how I feel also a rookie comes in with no OTA and performed very well and then you add he hasn't be a Wr very long and I think his upside is huge. I like Bryant a lot and it really is close but I will always go with the player who has shown the skills.

I don't know that I fully agree. I like Crabtree and everything he did last year after holding out and then playing as if he never missed a beat, but to say that we can assume that he won't be a bust is in error. It looks like he is going in the right trajectory; however, the NFL is littered with players that performed over a short period of time only to not live up to the expectations set (Michael Clayton anyone? Eddie Royal perhaps? even Michael Westbrook was supposed to take the NFL by storm).

I think Crabtree will be a stud WR - but to say that we can assume that he won't become a bust is a risk, IMHO.

Current redraft ADP

Crabtree is WR #16

Bryant is WR #28

I suspect that dynasty ADP is closer, and if anyone knows where to find that ADP data, I would like to see it.

This helps set the context for the debate a little more...I like both players very much, but in a redraft league Bryant comes with a little lower cost in terms of his draft slot. The question then becomes more of is each player over valued, under valued, or fair value for their ADP?

Very well put. I agree I would rather have Crabtree!
