Eagles and Cowboys vote to decertify union if necessary (1 Viewer)

per Chris Mortensen (via twitter):

---Filed to ESPN: Contrary to one speculative report, the Eagles did unanimously authorize union to decertify, if necessary, next March.

---The Cowboys also voted unanimously Wed on decertification process, too; the Redskins are next (Friday) after the Eagles unanimous vote today

---Last time union decertified, NFL implemented last best offer.

---Decertification - if it comes to that next March - would prevent the players from striking, which they have said they will not do.

---Decertification is a process where union would no longer be empowered to represent players in collective bargaining; last resort, as noted

---Last time the union decertified in 1989, no work stoppage and played continued until legal rulings influenced a new CBA in 1993.

--------

The last thread about this topic concerning the Saints (having the same unanimous vote) was shut down, I think because of the FFA-style pro-union vs non-union arguments.

Amongst a lot of rhetoric, there was some good info on what this actually means for the looming lockout possibility.

Maybe this can be kept on point, ie what this means for the NFL in 2011 (and beyond).

This news is really no surprise (at least to me) and I suspect every team will do the same as their vote comes up. Thanks for the news though.

Back in March and April I was thinking the whole mess would get cleared up and I wasn't worried about any lock-out or strike. Now I'm beginning to believe this won't end well and it's likely that the owners (who still haven't gotten their own house in order) are going to lock out the players and will do everything to ensure the public thinks it's the players fault. I firmly believe at this point that the onus is on the owners to get things straight with their house of cards before the players have a say on anything.

edit: Just saw your edit about the Cowboys and it is as I suspected. Every team will vote for this as they need to show the owners they stand as one. It would completely surprise me if any single team did not vote to decertify.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but that's not why they'd vote to decertify. They'd vote to decertify so that they can attack the NFL via antitrust for their anti-competitive behavior. If they decertify, the lockout and any issues with the NFL would no longer be in the area of Labor Law as a part of the collective bargaining process (which trumps the antitrust laws). This is all about making sure the players are in a position of power when it comes time for a lockout.

Yeah, I had my thoughts jumbled together here....you are right about the antitrust issue.......still can't see a single team NOT voting for de-certification.

I'm pretty sure none of the players on any team will vote against decertification. I'd have to believe that all of the NFLPA Player Reps met and agreed beforehand that this was the course of action they would be taking (per DeMaurice Smith) and recommending to the players. The players will all follow the recommendations of the player reps.
