So I would be intersted in some dialogue on why you guys made the picks where you did. I am always interested in learning the strategy. So I'll start:
I'm in the 8 spot. My strategy for almost anything is first and foremost that my goal is to drive my enemies before me and hear the lamentations of their women.
Then I reverse engineer from there. So, from the 8 spot thus far:
1st - Well I've done enough of these now this year that I know we unloaded the top tier of QBs by the time my pick came up. I knew Kyler and Mahomes were going later and so it isn't great value to reach for one of them in the first. Not at 8. If Burrow were there at 8 I might still take Bijan though. If Bowers is there I have a decision, and with my "firing several bullets" theory, at least in the big contests anyway but maybe less so in an isolated 12 team league like this, sometimes I would take Bowers there sometimes I would take Bijan there. As it was, neither Bowers or Burrow so then for me it's going for the #1 RB off the board. I'm ok with it being Barkley but I like Bijan better. If for whatever reason Chase had fallen there I probably take him and it is a coin flip with Bijan. Chase has fallen to the late 1st in plenty of SF drafts.
2nd - Either Kyler, Fields or Nix were on my mind here. Murray is the more established veteran by a mile and is more of a running producer than maybe being given credit per ADP. If I'd gone QB in the 1st round I would at least consider Nabers, Achane or Henry in the 2nd. As it were I went RB at 1 so QB at 2 is close to a necessity and I think Kyler is actually pretty great value there.
3rd - Not in love with the WR/RB/TE landscape at this spot. McConkey is one of my highest rated value picks this year. He is already expensive in the 2nd/3rd of most formats but I think he is a league winner this year and gets a zillion targets. So I almost took him here, also thinking I might grab Herbert in the 4th. But ultimately the need and desire for a strong 2nd QB was too good with Caleb, Purdy, Dak and others. I was also afraid ALL of those next QBs would go before getting back to me. It's a wide range of outcomes in that spot. I think Caleb is going to smash this year, I'm a homer, it's $5,
and I think critically that grabbing a 2nd QB in this particular spot gives me much more flexibility in the 4th.
4th - Do I want to put more chips in on a team strength (and need?) and grab another good QB IMO in Herbert? I almost grabbed Tyreek and I almost grabbed G Wilson. Would have been happy with either but I also was gambling that Marvin Harrison would fall in the 5th to pair with Kyler, in which case not taking a 3rd QB in that spot in the 4th round might have pigeonholed me into a 2QB build again, which as I've talked about upthread, I'm trying to avoid even though I keep doing it.
5th - Harrison did fall and it was a slam pick. This is a good example of taking a stack pair vs best player on the board because in this case I actually did reach across that boundary to grab Harrison. Because I actually have JSN higher and I have Cook as probably a coin flip there. But pairing Harrison with Kyler when I don't have McBride is too good here. There is a very strong chance he outperforms his ADP and maybe even makes a big leap. He fits that profile. (so does JSN and he isn't competing with McBride).
6th - Hampton fell and it was a slam pick. Stacking theory usually says that pairing a QB with their RB doesn't really do anything. Unless they get lot of receptions. Hampton might IDK. I definitely think he takes over that backfield and RBs are still a thing we need in these drafts. The stacking aspect is probably moot. Other than to say that if there is a game where Hampton scores a couple rushing TDs and has a big game but Herbert maybe doesn't, then I have two other strong QBs to cover him that week. If Hampton has a bad week it *might* be because Herbert was throwing TDs so there is at least some perks to having them together.
7th - Will Lisa find out Bob has been banging Carol behind her back? Will Tiffany leave George? Will George care? Tune in next week folks (ok like tomorrow) on the Days of our Drafts
