Eagles looking to extend Vicks contract? (1 Viewer)

The Philadelphia Eagles would like to retain resurgent quarterback Michael Vick for "next season and beyond," but have not engaged in contract talks, according to the The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing sources close to the situation.

The team plans to meet over the next few weeks to discuss Vick's future and a potential contract extension. Vick is in the second season of a two-year deal he signed with the Eagles before the 2009 campaign, after serving 18 months in prison for his role in a dogfighting ring.

The Eagles, with a history of using November to re-sign players with expiring contracts, know that Vick could be a hot commodity on the free-agent market following a string of sensational performances this season.

Vick has stated that his loyalty to the Eagles would bear weight in free agency, if it reached that point. "I think so," he told The Inquirer. "When nobody else wanted me, they did. I definitely have to take that into consideration when it's time to make a decision on something."

With Vick leading the way, the Eagles (5-3) are in position to make a run in a conference that lacks a dominant team. Philadelphia, which plays the Washington Redskins (4-4) on Monday night, is 3-0 in the games Vick has started and finished.

Vick nearly led the Eagles to a comeback win against the Green Bay Packers after replacing an injured Kevin Kolb in the opener. Vick was injured in the first quarter of a loss to the Redskins in Week 4, but returned in Week 9 to guide the Eagles to a 26-24 victory over Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

The layoff didn't affect his performance or his approach. Vick threw for 218 yards and one touchdown, and ran for 74 yards and another score against the Colts. He absorbed several hits in the pocket and several more when he scrambled 10 times.

Vick has thrown for 1,017 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions, and his passer rating of 105.3 is the highest of his career. He's also run for 261 yards and two scores.

Mike Vick will have a very difficult decision to make after this season. His agent would be silly to recommend signing long-term now vs. waiting to see what the rest of the NFL think he is worth post 2010. He got exactly what he needed out of Philly, a chance to showcase his talents for the rest of the NFL. There are several teams in need of QB's that will be willing to pay MV big $$$ to bring his game to their stadiums next year. He is saying all the right things now about wanting to stay in Philly and that he's grateful they took a chance on him, but he won't sign long-term before the end of the season.

Sal Pao talked about this on his local radio show last night. He expects the Eagles to franchise Vick if they can't resign him. They only owe Kolb 1.5 mil for next year (his restructuring this past offseason was all signing bonus so already off the books). They have a lot of QB budget remaining for 2011 and beyond.

Of course putting the franchise tag on him also opens the opportunity to trade him if another team is more interested in paying a huge contract.

A lot of teams would still be interested in Kolb either by trade this offseason or after 2011, so in dynasty leagues I think his value is still pretty stable.

From a fantasy prospect I'm wondering more if the Eagles will keep Kolb on for the last year of his contract as a reliable backup, or try to trade him.

If you're his agent you'd have him wait until the offseason to sign a contract? Then if there's a lockout and Vick is making nothing, you're looking for a new client. Especially, when a signing bonus is likely to be in the 20M+ range. The agents should know what Mike Vick is worth, it's not rocket science.

Do you think the Eagles will give MV $20 MM+ before the end of the season if they think there will be a lock-out in 2011?

Good question, which makes me wonder about the exact timing of payments. If they sign him to an extension, does that mean they pay signing bonus right away? Is it literally signing bonus as soon as you sign your name to the new contract? Or does that bonus come at end of existing contract? If there's no season in 2011 is Vick's and others potential signing bonus not paid until they come back?

The Eagles will franchise him if they don't extend him before that, no mystery there.
 Its all window dressing right now. They'll have discussions to get an idea of what he's thinking. Then they'll franchise him and either work a long term deal or trade to a team who will give a 1st rounder + extra. This of course is all contingent on him not getting killed over the next 2.5 months.

Actually have on offer of Kolb for Turner in a 2QB dynasty. Vick is clearly going to start in Philly next year. Kolb's value lies in a trade, which is tough to count on.

Will there be a franchise tag in the new CBA???? I think the players union hates it

I don't think they have the power to get rid of it. Especially since they will be focusing on other things like more money for retirees and veterans. Franchise tag would be down on the list of things they want to fight over.

No reason to think the Eagles won't make Vick their QB of present & future.

They won't have a lack of suitors for Kolb either. Good problem to have.

Schefter noted that the CBA doesn't expire until after teams can designate Franchise players, so teams will do it under the premise it will remain.
