Eagles Wide Receivers (1 Viewer)

I had the chance to go up to Eagles Training camp this week and was very impressed with the quality of WR talent that the Eagles have this year. There is really not a "big" name in the bunch, but I could see one or two of these guys really busting out and having a great year. The addition of Kevin Curtis is HUGE. From what I saw, he was obviously McNabb's favorite target and caught everything that was thrown to him. Throw in the fact that he runs great routes and you get a WR that could put up very good #2 or even #1 WR numbers on your fantasy squad. Reggie Brown has also been in the system for another year and he is having a great camp. The wildcard here is Jason Avant. From what I have heard, he runs his routes very aggressive and is always where he should be. He was being targeted quite a bit also and was making all his catches. If Brown or Curtis were to go down this year, I would have no doubt that Avant could step in and put up resepctable numbers.

All in all, after so many years of having an inferior group, I think that the WR corps of the Eagles is one of the team's strong points going into the season. A couple of these guys will jump out and surprise some people.

Just my 2 cents....

I was thinking about keeping Brown in my dynasty league this year. Glad to hear things are going well at camp. I just hope when McNabb gets hurt again they have someone to throw him the ball.

The biggest problem with the WRs in Philly is not their ability but their system. It seems like after the RB and TE the WRs are choice #3. They have talent, but not opportunity.

I agree with you to a point, but with the fact that LJ Smith reaggrevated his sports hernia and may miss time, I think the WR's are going to be leaned on a lot more this year. The Eagles on have Shoebel, Celek and Vikers as thie backup TE's and none of them strike fear in anyone's hearts.

Honestly in the two sessions I saw I was most impressed with Baskett. Curtis and Brown were clearly the two top dogs, but Baskett's size and hands allowed him to make plays I don't think the other WRs would have.

 I will say that Curtis looked very good on Monday, but that was without McNabb. Not sure if the pace of his throws is an issue, but he dropped some short ones on Wed (but did snare a 50-yard TDthat day).

Jeff are you "goodposting" the Baskett comments? It's hard for me to tell, and if so, please elaborate.

I would think so since he was the sole subject of my initial post...

Yes. I commented elsewhere (but SP is very seep in August), but Baskett looked very good.I was at camp on 8/6 and 8/8, both morning sessions.Baskett looks even better than last year and he'll be on the field quite a bit. I expect 3-wide, single set formations with Westy, Curtis in the slot, Baskett outside and Reggie Brown on the other side. Schobel as a blocker unless LJ gets healthy again. Celek looked ok, not great.Baskett's a very nice 3rd WR (in the NFL, not WR3 fantasy).

IMHO, Avant will beat Baskett for the #3 spot. It is just a gut feeling I have from what I have been hearing, reading and seeing at training camp. The Eagles like him a lot and are giving him a chance to shine. We will leanr a lot after Monday's game. Stay tuned.

In the McNabb era, what reeciver not named Owens really did a whole heck of a lot? I realize Brown was decent last season, but he did better with Garcia than he did with McNabb. Not hating on the PHI receivers, just wondering out loud whther there will be one or two guys that emerge that are really good fantasy values.

Stallworth finished at WR36 last year in FBG scoring and didn't play 16 games.

Confirmed the # of games - 12 - and 103 FPs last year for Donte. Had he played 16 he'd be comparable to Reggie Brown, who was #21 overall. How many teams had two WRs in the Top 36? Under 10....

It's the QB in Philly that makes the WR's the #3 option.

In the McNabb era, what quality receivers have they had besides Owens? Not that it is a great acheivement, but this crop of wideouts is better than any of them short of Owens. That illustrious group includes immortals such James Thrash, Todd Pinkston, Freddie Mitchell, and Charles Johnson. Not that anyone is going to confuse this group with the Colts or Bengals WRs, but Reggie Brown should eclipse the 1000 yard mark this year and be a decent WR2 for most fantasy teams. Beyond that is a crap shoot because Westbrook will likely be 2nd in receiving on the team. I'd imagine the best you can expect from any other Philly WR is bye week filler barring an injury.I don't get all the McNabb bashing on this board. Aside from the injuries he's had, he has been one of rare players who has been good in fantasy and reality. All Philly has done is won since he took over as full time starter in 2000. He's produced quality numbers despite his best receiver for all but the TO years being either his RB(Westbrook, Staley) or his TE(Lewis).
