Ed Reed suspended 1 game (1 Viewer)

#NFL press release on Ed Reed's 1-game suspension:Safety ED REED of the Baltimore Ravens has been suspended without pay for one game forrepeated violations of the rule prohibiting hits tothe head and neck area of defenseless players. The suspension was imposed by NFL Vice President of Football Operations MERTON HANKS.Reed may not practice this week nor play in the Ravens’ game this Sunday against the San DiegoChargers. He may not be at the team practice facility or stadium for any other activities during the suspension. He will be reinstated on Monday, November 26.Reed was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers for a hit to the head and neck area of a defenseless receiver, EMMANUEL SANDERS.It was Reed’s third violation in the past three seasons of the rules protecting defenseless players:On September 23, 2012 against the New England Patriots, Reed was penalized forunnecessary roughness and fined $21,000 for striking a defenseless player, wide receiverDEION BRANCH, in the head and neck area.On December 19, 2010 against the New Orleans Saints, Reed was penalized for roughing the passer and fined $10,000 for unnecessarily striking the quarterback, DREW BREES, in the head and neck area. The 2012 Schedule of Fines, distributed to players as part of the “League Policies for Players” manual, states: “Players who were fined for violations in 2010 or 2011, and whose fines were either partially or fully upheld, will be considered second and/or repeat offenders under this policy.”“We cannot tolerate repeated violations of rules, especially rules related to player safety,” said NFLExecutive Vice President of Football Operations RAY ANDERSON. “We will continue to take the strongest possible action to deter these types of violations and protect our players.”Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension may be appealed within three business days and an expedited hearing and decision would take place this week in advance of Sunday’s game. Appeals are heard and decided by either ART SHELL or TED COTTRELL, the officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.Reed is the second player suspended this season for violating rules designed to protect the safety of players. Denver Broncos linebacker JOE MAYS was suspended for one game for an illegal hit against a defenseless player, Houston QB MATT SCHAUB, in the Broncos’ September 23 game against the Texans.

Ed Reed is from New Orleans.

Of course.

:sarcasm:

Yeah, Roger, you're on it.

The late Mike Webster, a Hall of Fame center for the Steelers and Chiefs from 1974 to 1990, might be on the verge of developing notoriety for something else: changing the tide of the legal concussion battle between former players and the NFL.

According to documents obtained by PBS' Frontline show, the NFL's retirement benefits board acknowledged the brain damage suffered by Webster in a May 2000 letter to attorney Robert Fitzsimmons. The board also reportedly paid out more than $2 million in benefits to multiple players for brain-damage related injuries while, Frontline contends, the NFL "consistently denied any link between the sport and long-term brain damage."

"The Retirement Board determined that Mr. Webster's disability arose while he was an Active

Player," Sarah Gaunt, the retirement board's plan director, wrote in the letter. "The medical reports in Webster's file, including the reports of neutral physician Dr. Edward Westbrook, Dr. James Vodvarka, and Dr. Jonathan Himmelhoch, indicate that his disability is the result of head injuries he suffered as a football player with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs."

That paragraph, in and of itself, sounds pretty damning, given that the crux of the lawsuit between thousands of former players and the NFL is that the NFL purposely concealed information about the dangers of concussions for the league's players.

I can't say I'm at all surprised that Merton Hanks has an issue with players hitting in the neck area.

I can understand why Reed might think it's a good time to retire. The end of the NFL as we have known it for most of our lives. They should just play 7 on 7 with flags.

Unbelievable!

Reed was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Steelers for a hit to the head of Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders. That was Reed’s second violation of the rules against hits to defenseless receivers this year. He was fined $21,000 for a hit to Patriots receiver Deion Branch in September. Reed had also been fined $10,000 for a hit to Saints quarterback Drew Brees in 2010.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/11/19/nfl-suspends-ed-reed-one-game-for-repeated-hits-to-head/Is this like we're now doing the yellow card / red card thing? And:I just saw Cutler got knocked out in a 7 point game, a hit which sealed the win for Houston. Nice play, right? And:I am trying to think how many Saints had multiple or even singular defenseless receiver calls or concussed QBs between 2009-11, but I sure don' remember too many and none at all of the latter.Roger, making it up as you go along looks worse than doing nothing at all. It shows the existence of a guilty conscience plus incompetence on your part.

what did james harrison get last year for his repeated infractions? 1 or 2 games?
I dunno, but when Hines Ward did it, they called it good blocking.####### absurd rule that a player can lose games and half a million because another player ducks his head. Not saying this one was exactly that, but more than half of these flags seem more or less unavoidable and/or the result of the hittee moving.

I can't disagree with you. I just thought it showed consistency by the Commish. Now the the appeal reduced the suspension to a fine, I am not so sure. Granted HArrision's hit against McCoy had much worse results for the (victim?) opposing player but I am not sure the results should neccessarily be taken into account. I dunno, just seems that IF the punishment was a three strikes type punishment that it should have beenupheld for consistency sake.I am a Chiefs fan so there is no Steeler bias but in retrospect it seems like a bias by the league.

That's one of the problems in the NFL regarding fines and suspensions -- there is no consistency. I agree it probably isn't fair but Harrison likely contributed to his demise by publicly insulting the commissioner several times. I don't know if he would have avoided suspension had he kept his mouth shut but it certainly didn't help.
