Eddie Brown - WR Bengals (1 Viewer)

Sweet Love

IBL Representative
I was looking at PFR and was looking up my boy Al Toon, when I noticed Eddie Brown was drafted by the Bengals. I did not really follow the NFL then like I do today, so I am not that familiar with Brown, but he seemed to have a nice 8 year career. He was a pretty consistent 700-1000 yard guy, but by just looking at his stats, it seems like he abruptyly retired. Does anyone know the reason behind this?

Speaking of abrupt career endings... look no further than Reggie Langhorne who's last season was: 85 catches for 1038 yards.

No clue why.

Those kind of guys always throw me off. I posted about 6 months ago in regards to Johnny Jonson (RB Jets) who left after like 900 yards and 6-7 TDs. He at least had an interesting story behind him...the weirdest hands down is David Diaz-Infante. He played 3 games in 1987 for KC and then out of the blue, he appears for Denver in 1996 as a 32 year old "sophomore". How did he get back on the radar?

Doc is a great guy, and has plenty of stories about his football career. It ranged from early days with the Chargers on the PS (when Fouts was there I believe), to the World League, the Arena League, the Broncos SB years, the XFL, and then the Eagles (with McNabb). He asked He Hate Me (they were teammates) before a game why the nickname. HHM said, "See that LBer over there? He Hate Me. See that DL over there? He Hate Me."Doc now does the color commentary for the Broncos on AM 850 KOA. I did my first appearance on radio as a guest with Doc back in the 760 the Zone days.

herniated a cervical disc
Thanks. Today would that be viewed as a career ending injury?
Brian Urlacher has been playing with one for quite some time (2 years I think). His career will nodoubt be shortened by it. Last year he was in a lot of pain. Had neck surgery this offseason I believe and will have to have his spinal segments fused in the future From a physical therapist's standpoint- you can play with a herniated disc, but it will be painful. Eventually the disc will need to be removed the the spinal segments will need to be fused (which is a good solution, but something you never want) However, in the end, it will definately shorten the career of an individual. There are too many risks associated with it, not to mention the symptoms can be unbearable at times, and it can leave the person's musculoskeletal system weak as a result of prlonged nerve impingment.

In short- no, not immediately career ending, but shortening definately depending on the severity

Cecil,Thanks for chiming in on this...I have literally been meaning to post about this for the last 2-3 years...so what was he doing between 1987=1996 and how did he get a try-out for the Broncos?

A trivia question inspired by this observation:Nine players in NFL history have had either 1000+ yards rushing or 1000+ yards receiving in their final season. Who are they?Langhorne is one. A few are very easy, but I'd be impressed if anyone could get all nine without cheating. [NOTE #1: some people might dispute one of the answers. If you want to call it only 8 guys, I won't argue too much.] [NOTE #2: I'm obviously not counting guys, like Randy Moss, whose "final season" was 2007.]

jimmy smith?

You guys are checking them off: Brown, Sanders, Sharpe, Jimmy Smith, and Robert Smith are correct. That's five. Langhorne is six. Three more to go (one of whom might be considered fishy by some).

Here are a couple of stabs:

Napolean Kaufman

Emmit Smith (I believe he got 1K yards in Cards uni, just not sure whether it was the last year)

I'm still pissed that Cincy took Eddie Brown over Jerry Rice. At the time, it seemed reasonable thinking his big school experience would bring more upside than Rice's small school background...

Rae Carruth? Fred Lane?

Would that fishy one be Michael Vick? I think he ran for over 1000 in his last season.
Yep.

Neither.

Tiki.
Yes.

FWIW, the 9th player on the list is a tough one. It's someone we've all heard of, but I doubt anyone would really think about. Pretty much everyone would get him after the others.

Barber 1662

Brown 1544

R. Smith 1521

Sanders 1491

Sharpe 1119

Vick 1039

Langhorne 1038

J. Smith 1023

Follow up trivia question.

Name the nine QBs that threw for over 3,000 yards in their last season in the NFL.
