Ellen Page comes out (1 Viewer)

Not a huge surprise, but good for her.
I suspect it was a career move.

She could have come out at any time, it's a not so well guarded secret in the industry for a very long time. It would have been more impressive if she came out during the height of her fame, post Juno.

But her last film, The East, bombed. More to point, she got critically panned in it. Her one "gimme" film, post Oscar nomination, to prove her box office chops, Whip It, failed. She had a non memorable part in Inception. There was that anti establishment super hero film, Super, where she tried to show herself as sexually aggressive that didn't make any money. That she's associated with the X men franchise, this was her last shot while her name would buzz once more to try to get some momentum going.

It's not her fault she looks like shes 16, and probably will most of her life. But it's limiting on the parts she can get. She simply doesn't look old enough to hold a film's female lead category for most adult oriented films.

Juno was in 2007, she's a couple of steps away from having to do television full time.

Maybe the saddest part is she looks just a few shades too old to play Ellie in The Last Of Us, the video game that will be turned into a film and a decent chance to be a hit or maybe a franchise, even though they stole her likeness without paying her.

What no one seems to mention when someone comes out, is the fallout. When Zachary Quinto came out, it outed Hayden Pantierre as a beard, which exposed Milo Ventimiglia and Scotty McKnight, which in turn, shone some light onto Mark Sanchez.

Might be great for Ellen Page, but she sort of left Alexander Skarsgard, who needs his leading man appeal with women to stay established, out hanging in the wind.
It's true, she's been done for a while now, right? Is she C-list, maybe?

She's the precocious, cuteish, quirky diffident girl ... and now she's too old to be precocious and why she's so diffident is now oh so obvious.

I liked her in Juno and maybe another movie I can't recall, but thought she was completely out of place and really not very good in Inception.

So, this is a nothing.

Wake us up when Travolta or Cruise or Timberlake announce something.

:lmao: at Ellen Page being "done for awhile now" and "C-list." She's in a little indie joint coming out soon called X-Men. Probably will only run at the Angelika, so you might have to travel to see it.

The East is a good flick and it's financial success/failure had absolutely nothing to do with her. It was a small movie that received little to no promotion. And it was Zal Batmanglij's and Brit Marling's movie, not Ellen Page's.

Do love me some Gecko woman/gay-hating schtick though.

Every time they make one of these announcements, I get confused as to why I should care?
Why do you assume she wants you to care?
Not her, the news media. Society in general. Not being facetious, I simply don't understand why this is news. It's about as rare as sunrise nowadays. Why does anyone really care?
Why'd you click the thread?
I woke up at 6:00 am today and was sort of bombarded with it. My DIL has taken to posting congrats on her FB page each and every time someone comes out. Then it was all over the morning news. So I basically came in to ask the question I asked.

How did your DIL do work with this information? I bet it was hard for her.

Which actually I did not realize about X-men, I thought that already happened (admittedly a little out of it). I just don't get into the Marvel movies really so I guess the last thing I remember her in was Inception.

I'm a little surprised no one's ever started at thread about her, she probably deserves discussion in her own right.

I think you guys are being way too harsh on Tx. He's not saying it's not important for the person coming out, but I agree with him, these announcements aren't really earth shattering, and I don't know why we should call a multi-millionaire 'courageous' for coming out in a very pro-gay right Hollywood. Now a 16 year old in HS, totally different world.

How much entertainment news is "earth shattering"? ####, how much regular news is?

It's also not earth shattering when an actress gets married, or has a child. Yet those things get reported on as well. Sorta agree with you on the courageous thing.

When I saw this, I first thought Emma Watson for some reason. But yeah, not too surprising.
When I read this, I thought you were talking about Emma Stone. That would be something. Ellen Page may not have the best body but she cleans up nice. I bet she'd look great on the red carpet with someone like Emma.

This is probably a joke of some sort but I admittedly don't get it.

Admittedly, I don't get why those things are news either. Well, that's not true. I guess I get that it is news because people care. I guess what I truly don't understand is why people care to begin with? Is it one of those "living vicariously through others" things or something?

Beauty. Celebrity. Fame. Sex.

Yep. No idea why people would be interested in this.

No one in the article or the thread called her courageous. So far, however, a few people did say she wasnt courageous.

Sure. I'd like to live vicariously through all the hot Hollywood tail Page is probably plowing through.

Yeah, 'courageous' is a tough adjective to pull off here, but I think the point is maybe it helps that 16 YO HS kid a little.

As much as we assume Hollywood is teaming with lesbians, Page is still fairly unique here. She's 26, hot, talented, and has already starred in good films and will continue to do so.

Unless I'm missing something, there haven't been a ton of actresses come out in similar situations at a similar age.

Ellen, maybe, but she was almost 40. Don't know when Portia came out.

Sara Gilbert was a similar age, but was never expected to have the movie career Page is in the middle of.

You've got some older actresses that, I think, generally waited a while to come out (Meredith Baxter, Cherry Jones, Lily Tomlin)

Anyway, maybe you can't throw a dead cat in Hollywood without hitting two lesbians having sex, but mid-20's, attractive, bona fide movie stars don't come out everyday.

Here's wikipedia's list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lesbian_actresses

Outside of Ellen, Tomlin, Portia, and maybe Jane Lynch, Page is already the biggest star on it, and certainly the one younger folks will identify withmost.

I actually thought shed be a bigger star by now. Two independent hits in hard candy and juno, followed by a small part in a blockbuster (xmen), followed by a big part in a blockbuster (inception), followed by tons of commercials (i forgot what product but she was talking to people in other countires on the computer, and then nothing much at all.

Also, Ellie from the Last of Us reminded me of her.

Juno was her high water mark. If that was supposed to launch her to it-girl status, her career has been a massive disappointment. She would not have come out if she was getting leading lady/POA type roles in movies. I don't see how it's courageous at all in that context.

No chance in hell Emma Stone isn't a meat eater.

I agree with Tx that who cares, just like who cares about 99% of everything else considered "news" these days. The whole football player coming out being leading item on ESPN for 72 hours had me scratching my head too.

Americans have a fascination with sexuality it seems. I imagine that over time as the hatred/discrimination/insensitivity towards gays disappears so will the front page news stories every time someone comes out of the closet.

In the mean time, I'm going to go think about an Emma/Emma/Ellen/Me muffuletta sandwich.

Yeah, her career really took off after Juno.

And "gay hating shtick"? Lol. Okay.

You're trying way too hard to GG bash.

Speaking of trying too hard.

Also, she was a lead in another little indie joint since Juno called Inception. It only played on a handful of art houses in Germany, but did "ok" bringing in over $800M.

Few are throwing around the "C-word", but I can assure that most of the people that are, do so with implicit understanding that there are millions of things people do that are far more courageous than this.

It seems it takes some level of courage for anyone to come out, and Page is probably no different. It need not cost her a bunch of money for her to have to overcome some fears in order to do it.

She probably never was going to be the "it-girl", and sure, it's likely she didn't just cost herself any roles (though you imply coming out isn't going to help her leading lady/POA role chances).

Either way, I'm not sure why it matters what she may have cost herself.

Coming Out of the Closet:It seems even beautiful celebrities have a hard time coming out to their families. When Portia came out to her grandmother in 2005, as reported in The Advocate the first thing her grandmother said was, "Well this is a very bad day. Darlin', you're not one of those." Later her grandmother told her, she loves her just the same and would like to meet Ellen.

I brought 'courageous' into the thread which was probably a mistake. But lots of people were overreacting to Tx saying he didn't think it was a big deal. IMO, we have swung so far the other way re:acceptance that people who ask an honest question or opinion like Tx get skewered.

Lol. Dude, you called GG a gay hater. I pointed out how absurd that was and I'm trying too hard? Okie dokie...

She really carried Inception. Another springboard role for her for sure.
