Emerging NFL Talent Series: Big Mike Williams (1 Viewer)

I still can't believe how far Williams has come since the start of last season. To go from being out of the game, and more out of the shape than my Uncle Carl, it is really impressive. I'm rooting for him.

Very true about him coming a long way. Mel Kiper listed Williams as a guy he was wrong about before last year's draft - the same guy he had No.1 on his board at one time.

I remember last May when asked by a Seattle station which Williams I thought had a better shot to make the team, Mike or Reggie, I said Reggie. Then I was reading Danny O'Neil's account of Big Mike's transformation and it convinced me to give him another shot as a late-round flier.

I cant get behind a guy as slow as him. I get that he's good at "buying back his real estate", but nonetheless he's a slug.

At a legit 6'5 230' the thing that sticks out to me in that highlight clip that was linked before was how good BMW catches in traffic and when the pass is being contested. That gives a QB confidence to o your way and hus big body makes it tough for defenders to get around. I think he could easily do 1100/10 this year.

I no longer have any doubt about BMX the football player. As a dynasty owner in multiple leagues, I have these three concerns:

[*]Terrible offense, lack of red zone opportunity

[*]No franchise QB

[*]Targets

Big Mike had two touchdowns last year. That was disappointing considering his frame. He also looks covered from the QBs angle on almost all plays. It takes a special QB to chuck the ball at a guy that looks covered. There is a lot of faith there. His targets will only increase if they find a QB that has big faith in Big Mike.

I know BMX can do it, just not sure about the other variables.

I like his size which gives him advantages in jump ball situations. The biggest problem is a solid offense, QB should also change. Kolb or Orton would be really nice for him

Great article as always Matt.

BMW clearly has turned the corner & gets it now as in what it takes to be at the top of your game as a professional. In short, he is a true professional now.

I think any QB he works with will quickly learn who butters his bread & BMW will get enough targets to be a high end WR2 with upside. That could be optimism personified but at his current ADP/undervalued status in many leagues, he pays off even if he ends up around the top 30. WR35 based on current ADP is criminal

That was my impression but after watching the clips you will see that he moves better than you might think.

I just dont see the talent here Matt, he still looks a bit fat to me I see like ZERO separation between him and the defender, look at those clips Matt, the one he broke off at 1.54 was preseason, the rest he's tackled as soon he catches the ball, and I dont see the leeping ability does he even get 6 inches off the ground at 1.55, 2.33, and 2.39? I think his ceiling is similar to last year 65/700/4 which is fine at last years waiver wire price tag but this year theres higher ceiling more athletic players at his ADP.

It sounds like you place a lot weight on physical ability and not enough on technique and skill. But hey, we'll find out.

A lot of how I view him will be what he's done this off-season. If he actually takes football serious for a full off-season I think he can be a stud. His size alone should guarantee 10+ TD's and he could very well catch 75-85 for 1100 IMO

Not sure who will be under center this year for the Hawks, but I was incredibly enthused on the few games that BMS had mundo targets and double digit receptions last year. I think his hand injury may have set him back statistically at the time, missing week 12, 13, and 14.

For 2011, if Hasselbeck (sp?) returns and locks target on BMW again, I could see him in the high 80's to low 90's and maybe even 100 receptions. TD's are tough to predict, but if I see high reception totals like I am anticipating, 7 td's would be fine enough for me.

Not to hijack the thread, but is there any official way to separate Mike Williams from Sea from Mike Williams from TB? Do either of them have a middle initial?

A lot of how I view him will be based on who is throwing him the ball...

Watch this video this guy just absolutely humiliates corners after the catch, it takes 3, 4, 5 guys to bring him down, whether it be fakes or because he simply used his 6-5 230 body and dragged the guy for 10 yds, he looks much faster and smoother and more athletic than BMW, after the catch he's more elusive and strong as a bull, he creates more separation in both his routes because of his speed and quickness and by his leaping ability. I think BMW is considerably worse than Brandon Marshall and all Marshall did last year was 86/1014/3, I think BMWs ceiling is considerably lower than that, I see him needing a lot of balls to be productive because his receptions will be catch-tackled, catch-tackled every time and thats only where the corner is looking the other way like in alot of these clips and he will struggle against better corners. Furthermore I think a safety will be able to cover him easily in the redzone a 6-1, 6-2 safety with better leaping ability will make BMW a very small target so I expect his touchdown totals to be low as well.

For these reasons as well as the QB uncertainty I think BMW will be a bye week filler type at best with a very low floor, he could very easily fall off the planet, the Seahawks have some good young athletic WRs, or he could go back to his lazy McDonalds days I dont think the investment is worth the reward in this case.

What I do like, especially in keeper format, is Williams isn't commanding much attention this offseason. So even if he falls between what Matt and Norris are seeing, he represents nice value.

Keep in mind that he also had 3 TDs in the 2 playoff games. Mike Williams had 4 TDs in the last 3 games of the season....which were also Seattle's biggest three games of the season.

He's commanding alot of attention he's going about WR35 thats too expensive, hats off to Waldman though for being the first guy to really pimp BMW last season  Just think he's going to the well one too many times this year.
