Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders is set to undergo surgery to repair a broken foot sustained in the Super Bowl.

Sanders initially appeared to have banged his knee on the play. The broken foot explains why he slammed his helmet in frustration and was then ruled out for the game after coming back on for one snap. Sanders may end up missing portions of OTAs -- if the NFL even has spring practices this year -- but he should be recovered in time for training camp.

I think that was a bigger loss than most people think. According to some of the players I've heard, Sanders was a pretty big part of the game plan.

Hopefully he's fully recovered for camp...if there is camp.

Analysis: That's essentially starter's snaps. Sanders' early second-quarter foot injury was a big blow to the Steelers' personnel groupings in the Super Bowl. He'll return in 2011 with a big role, playing in all three-receiver sets and potentially even giving Hines Ward a run for his money in "two wides" packages.

He was drafted to replace Santonio Holmes so they definitely like him alot.

I'd be surprised if Sanders doesn't take over in the two wide packages next season. Ward is still a crafty veteran WR, but he's lost what speed he had left. I'm sure his blocking and ability to find holes in a zone will keep him around for another year or so, but I think he's done as a fantasy asset. I believe that Sanders is actually a pretty good bet to put up WR2/3 numbers next year. Mike Wallace is going to see a lot of coverage, and Big Ben threw for 4300+ in 2009, and would have thrown for 4200+ given a full slate in 2010.

Leading up to the game, he was definitely a concern. I wonder if this injury played into the fact that Wallace was used in a possession role quite often.

The difference between winning and losing in that game was an inch hereon one or two passes, a break there on injury.

I shouldn't have included the "to be clear" part. That was kind a Sabertool moment. It most certainly is a game of inches. I am a Sander dynasty owner and I really like his potential. He strikes me as a really strong candidate to push Hines Ward out. He reminds me of a Martz type receiver, really shifty and a good catcher.
