Emmy winning Pittsburgh anchor of 18 years fired for racial stereotyping on Facebook (1 Viewer)

How do you know this?  How do you know she doesn't have inside information from the police on the suspects?
She presented the hypothetical traits as the cause, not a detail.  Her knowing any of these details for a fact does not make it any less ignorant.

Right, let's not make any presumptions that poverty and broken families have anything to do with black violence.  Keep it in the closet where it belongs so we can keep blaming it on other things, mainly white racism - which ironically is just as much a sterotying exercise as what this woman did.

She made no attempt to discuss the conditions that lead to the symptoms of poverty.  She essentially said, "There (get it?) prob black, poor, and their moms got around.  Too bad nothing scared them.  I did meet a nice black guy once, so there is hope."

Is it that hard to distinguish between Wendy Bell's mindset and that of an Imperial Grand Wizard somewhere?

It's not binary.    No one is trying to equate her with a Grand Wizard.      There are degrees with this sort of thing.   Even if her profiling guess was correct (which partially it was, partially it wasn't), what does postulating on such a thing accomplish, other than to drive a wedge between the races even an asshair further?   When the Colorado movie theater was shot up,did she hop onto Facebook and guess that the shooter was a crazy ### white boy with mental issues?      If not, don't you see any problem with the disconnect there?   I'm not saying it's the end of the world, and I really don't care one way or other about her current employment status.    But it was really stupid.    And that other paragraph about being a magic white lady who just raised that little negro's self-worth tenfold by telling his boss he was doing a bang up job -- good grief.    Again -- I don't think it comes from a place of malice -- just cluelessness.

>>>Why wouldn't an honest apology have been accepted?

We'll not know, because her cheesedick attempt at an apology was your standard non-apology.    (paraphrasing)   "I'm sorry that some of the words I said could be construed by some as offensive" type of thing.

Why does she have to get to the root cause of black poverty and the breakdown of the family?  Why aren't those causes in and of themselves sufficient?

Because it's not accurate; or complete, at the very least.  Melanin does not lead to psychopathy. Your siblings having a different dad than you does not lead to psychopathy.

I have a feeling that our intentions are different, but I'm actually with you: Let's talk about it.  We don't need to pretend that the black community isn't struggling; making historic progress, but struggling.  We don't need to label facts as racist.  But if we're going to have the conversation, we need to be thorough in doing so, as not to confuse correlation with causation.  The journalist obviously did just that - which is counterproductive.

Yeah well if you're predisposed to hate her before you even read it, why bother.

She is one of the faces of the news division, so her firing is the only option.  yes, she was there 18 years, but it apparently took that long to identify her as a racist.

The condescention in the restaurant story is kind of cringeworthy.  It reminds of the Bill O'Reilly story where he goes to dinner with Al Sharpton in Harlem and is surprised at how civilized everybody is..... :X .

Especially when no malice was intended, and no one was economically harmed or robbed of opportunity. Why doesn't society, in aggregate, take intent into account? Is it that hard to distinguish between Wendy Bell's mindset and that of an Imperial Grand Wizard somewhere? Why wouldn't an honest apology have been accepted?
I can distinguish between Charlie Manson and a drunk driver who killed somebody, but I don't want either of them driving my kids' school bus.

Do not post on any social media. It's simply the dumbest thing a person can do in this day and age of everyone having cell phones that capture video and pictures.

You have to be a complete idiot to post anything that can even be construed as racial in this day and age. It's not worth your career...unless you hate it.
yep, posting anything on social media has zero upside.  blown away by the stuff people post of FB/Twitter/etc.  What's the point.

It doesn't really matter if what she says is true or not, it was a stupid thing for a news anchor to write.   If she would have stuck to posting recipes or videos of cats playing piano she would still have a job.   She knew this was controversial and wanted a reaction and got one.

I think WTAE could have handled this better but this was not the first incident for Bell.   She had made several insensitive remarks to her black co-anchor over the years and supposedly had been told more than once to tone it down.

I am sorry she lost her job but she should have known better.

Having a valid point or not doesn't matter. As a public figure, or anyone really, you gain nothing by writing or speaking anything but absolute PC language in today's environment.
